Linear polyurethane coatings. Solvents and thinners - which of which and for what? How to dissolve polyurethane varnish

Polyurethane paints and varnishes widely used in furniture industry, and in construction supermarkets you can easily find these paints and varnishes for domestic use. Therefore, we believe that it makes sense to get acquainted in detail with the properties of polyurethane paints and varnishes.

Polyurethane paints and varnishes (paints, varnishes, primers) are a large group of polymers:

  • The main component of polyurethane resins are polyols synthesized on the basis of substances traditionally used for alkyd coatings, so the price of polyurethane materials is relatively low. Polyols are oligomers consisting of fairly large molecules with about several tens of active sites.
  • The second component of polyurethanes are hardeners based on diisocyanates, consisting of small molecules with two active sites. During film formation, the active sites of diisocyanates bind to the active sites of polyols, and a urethane bond is formed.
  • One polyol molecule can be linked by diisocyanates to many other polyol molecules, and so on. Thus, films of polyurethane coatings are obtained, having a branched three-dimensional mesh structure. Such films are resistant to water, acids, mineral and organic oils, gasoline, oxidizing agents.

The vapor permeability of polyurethane paints, varnishes, primers is an order of magnitude lower than that of nitrocellulose.

Polyurethane paints, varnishes, primers are mainly used for finishing wooden products indoors.

The ratio of components in polyurethane paints and varnishes

The components of the working mixture of polyurethane paints and varnishes are usually mixed two parts of resins plus one part of hardener immediately before use, since the life of polyurethane materials is short: 3-6 hours.

The ratio of the base and hardener in the working mixture is obtained in such a way that the number of bonds between the molecules is equal to 60-90% of the maximum possible.

Deviations of the amount of hardener in the working mixture from the specified proportion within ± 10% do not lead to a significant change in the properties of the coating.

Solvents for polyurethane varnishes and paints

Solvents for polyurethane materials are mixtures of liquids with a low boiling point; alcohol and water impurities are not allowed in them.

For polyurethane materials, a system of tinting pastes has been developed, which can be added to varnishes in a significant amount - up to 30% without deteriorating the performance properties of the materials.

Using a variety of polyurethane materials, almost any given type of finish can be obtained: from simple single-layer to exclusive.

In domestic technical literature decorative properties polyurethane coatings are usually distinguished by the term "silkyness".

Dried polyurethane coatings are devoid of any toxicity, allow food contact with them, polyurethane materials are produced certified according to the strict European standard related to the safety of toys.

From this article you will learn:

Such surfaces in the apartment as floors, concrete walls, furniture, interior items, are constantly threatened by many aggressive external factors: hot dishes, spilled liquids and food, heels and other sharp objects, household chemicals. As a means of protecting the integrity and appearance surfaces, use polyurethane varnish. It is easy to apply and forms a strong, quick-drying film, while a thinner for polyurethane varnishes provides the product with the right consistency.

What is a thinner for polyurethane varnishes

Sometimes the term "solvent" is used in the sense of "diluent", but this is not entirely correct: these liquids are different in composition and functions. A solvent is a liquid that dissolves a hardened substance (polyurethane or other varnish, for example), and a thinner is a liquid used to reduce the viscosity of any agent (varnish, paint, stain, etc.).

Some liquids can only dilute interior finishing products, while others not only dilute, but can also dissolve a dried film of varnish or some other coating. So, white spirit can serve as a thinner for polyurethane or thick alkyd-oil varnish, however, when dried, these compounds cease to dissolve in it. But denatured alcohol is both a solvent and a thinner for shellac.

Polyurethane varnishes are mixtures of a solution of a polyurethane oligomer and organic solvents. When choosing a thinner for polyurethane varnish, it is necessary to ensure that the varnish does not contain alcohols, gasolines and nitrocom components and at the same time contains acetates or aromatic hydrocarbons.

Aromatics (toluene, xylene), esters (ethyl acetates, butyl acetates, ethyl glycol acetate), ketones (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone) are used as solvents and thinners for polyurethane varnishes. All components of polyurethane varnishes, as well as thinners for them, should not contain hydroxyl-containing compounds (for example, alcohols, water) that react with isocyanates.

In addition, the presence of benzene, pyrobenzene and methanol in solvents and thinners for polyurethane varnishes is excluded.

Give preference to thinners of well-known brands, in this case you do not have to worry about the quality of the coating.

As thinners for polyurethane varnishes to the desired degree of viscosity, solvents R-4, R-4A (GOST 7827-7) are usually used, into which 10-30% is added (for applying varnish with a brush) or all 100% of the solvent (if working with an airbrush) .

When treating the surface with polyurethane varnishes, take into account their low viability: after the varnish has been mixed with a thinner and other ingredients, it can be worked with for only 12 hours (at a temperature of about +20 ° C).

Safety precautions when working with a thinner for polyurethane varnishes

Solvents and thinners are gradually added to the polyurethane varnish, gently mixing it and bringing it to the desired consistency. Before this, you need to wear a special protective mask and rubber gloves - all these compounds are hazardous to health, so safety precautions are mandatory. The room in which the varnish is mixed must be well ventilated.

If diluent comes into contact with skin, wash affected area immediately warm water. Containers with polyurethane varnish and thinner are tightly closed after work, and then the thinner is stored in a dark place. The mixture is kept in a place protected from ultraviolet rays, fireproof and out of the reach of children.

Human danger

When working with paints and varnishes solvents and thinners, be aware that almost any construction and household chemicals are toxic, so do not forget to take the necessary safety measures.

Even a single exposure to a concentrated thinner for polyurethane varnish (or rather, its fumes) on the human body is dangerous for the eyes and respiratory tract, as well as for the skin. The central nervous system, liver and kidneys, digestive system can be affected.

Long-term skin contact with the diluent (solvent) can lead to dermatitis and, in severe cases, bone marrow and blood problems.

When using thinners for polyurethane varnishes, adhere to the norms of GOST 12.1.005 at the workplace.

The concentration of toxic substances in the air at the workplace is measured using the methods described in GOST 12.1.005 and 12.1.016, approved by state health authorities.

fire hazard

Thinner for polyurethane varnishes is a combustible and flammable substance (class 3.1 flammable liquid, flash point is less than +23 ° C), so it must be stored in a safe place, away from sources open fire and sparks. Do not smoke near the container with diluent. The mixture of diluent vapors with air is explosive.

At temperatures above +20 °C, the thinner for polyurethane varnishes pollutes the surrounding air quite quickly (and even faster if the product is sprayed).

Diluent vapors are heavier than atmospheric air, they spread along the ground and can cause a fire at some distance from the container with the substance.

Interacting with strong oxidizing agents - nitric or acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide - the diluent is capable of forming explosive substances. IN normal conditions reacts with bromoform and chloroform, which is fraught with explosions and fires. Also, the thinner destroys some types of plastic materials.

You can extinguish a fire with a thinner for polyurethane varnish using:

  • chemical foam;
  • carbon dioxide;
  • water (dispersion spray);
  • air (mechanically).

Transportation

Solvents and thinners for polyurethane varnishes are supplied in glass or metal containers with a volume of 0.5-10 liters. It is possible to transport these compositions only in tightly closed containers, protected from heat, direct sun rays and moisture ingress. Transportation is allowed only in specialized railway tanks or cars. Such precautions are due to the fact that solvent mixtures are highly explosive and flammable.

For the transportation of solvent compositions, in particular, a thinner for polyurethane varnish, by rail, tanks are used that belong to the supplier or buyer or leased in accordance with the Rules for the carriage of goods by rail in bulk in tank cars and bunker-type cars for transporting oil bitumen. It is also allowed to transport the diluent in special tank containers for dangerous liquid goods of class 3 (see "Rules for the transport of dangerous goods by railways»).

Thinners for polyurethane varnishes, filled into containers for transportation, are transported in covered freight cars or in universal containers (see "Rules for the transport of dangerous goods by rail" and " Specifications placement and securing of goods in wagons and containers).

Environmental requirements

The production of thinners for polyurethane varnishes is associated with the formation of gaseous or liquid wastes that pose an environmental hazard to the atmosphere and water bodies.

To protect atmospheric air from toxic impurities, compliance with the maximum allowable emissions (MAE) established by GOST 17.2.3.02 is being monitored. The procedure for exercising this control is determined by the relevant authorities. executive power RF.

As for the protection of waters (in particular, fishery reservoirs) from toxic effluents, they also have maximum permissible concentrations and approximately safe exposure levels, compliance with which is controlled by state authorities.

Liquid wastes, which are contaminated solvent mixtures (including thinners for polyurethane varnishes), are either poured into treatment facilities, or returned to production, where they are collected and then recycled for reuse.

The vast majority of modern varnish compositions are safe for people, they can be used not only for internal, but also for external work. Exists a large number of various kinds varnishes that differ in performance characteristics and composition of components. In the article we will consider only one type - polyurethane floor varnishes. These varnishes are successfully used as an effective and safe alternative to previously widely used varnishes with a high content of harmful volatile chemical compounds based on various aggressive inorganic solvents. In developed foreign countries the share of water-based varnishes exceeds 50% of all coatings, and in housing construction and the furniture industry this number rises to 90%.

Depending on the specific type, polyurethane varnishes can be used to coat wooden and concrete floors, furniture, exterior and internal surfaces walls, etc.

Water-based varnishes in the dry residue they have at least 40% of the substance, due to which the cost is reduced in comparison with those previously used based on chemical solvents. Polyurethane varnishes are distinguished by increased indicators of physical strength and plasticity. They perfectly resist hard ultraviolet rays, are not afraid of the negative effects of natural precipitation and temperature changes, have high wear resistance, do not form microcracks during sharp shock loads.

To reduce the cost, polyurethane varnishes can be slightly diluted with acrylic, such compositions form a separate group of acrylic-polyurethane coatings. The decrease in value occurs simultaneously with a slight deterioration performance characteristics This should not be forgotten by consumers.

Depending on the method of preparation for use, polyurethane varnishes can be of two types:

  • one-component. The easiest to use, in most cases suitable for use without pre-training. Additional dilution with solvents is allowed only in case of slight thickening caused by long-term storage or violation of the tightness of the package;
  • two-component. More complex varnishes, before application, two components responsible for the course of polymerization reactions should be mixed. More difficult to use, the price is superior to the first. Significantly improved performance.

Important. During drying, two-component varnishes release harmful chemical compounds into the air. When performing work, it is necessary to take measures to protect the respiratory system and ensure effective natural ventilation premises.

Polyurethane varnishes penetrate deep into the surface, thereby improving strength and wear resistance. Depending on the type of external surface, they can be glossy, semi-gloss, semi-matte and matte.

A short list of the most famous polyurethane floor varnishes

Among the manufacturers, we have chosen only those that have positive reviews from multiple consumers.

The outer surface can be matte, semi-matte, semi-gloss or glossy, used for coating wooden floors interior spaces. The top film is characterized by high strength, does not react to most household liquids, including detergents. Resistant to prolonged direct contact with water, not afraid of shock. Differs in high rates of plasticity. The application technology allows self-leveling of the varnish - the surface becomes perfectly flat. It dries quickly, with effective natural ventilation, three layers can be applied within a day - the terms of painting work are significantly accelerated.

The first layer raises the pile on the boards, which requires additional sanding. Complete drying time is no more than two hours, quick application is required, it is advisable to use wide rollers, only hard-to-reach places are processed with brushes.

ZAR ULTRA EXTERIOR

For outside work. It is often used to cover the wooden floors of gazebos, verandas, baths, etc. It dries quickly, has increased abrasive abrasion. To increase resistance to hard ultraviolet radiation innovative additives are added. In terms of efficiency and duration, the coating is much superior to existing domestic counterparts. Drying time up to two hours, not afraid of temperature changes, does not exfoliate from the surface for the entire period of operation.

It has special inclusions that prevent the processes of wood decay and inhibit the reproduction of various microorganisms and vegetation.

Polyurethane varnish UR-293

The main purpose is for the finishing coating of concrete floors, it is allowed to use on wooden surfaces, for internal works. It has high wear resistance and impact resistance, which makes it possible to use varnish not only for residential premises, but also for warehouses, industrial and public buildings. One-component, hardening occurs due to the moisture contained in the air. The coating is resistant to household and industrial chemical substances. Thinner - xylene or solvent, glossy varnish, drying time within 36 hours, maximum hardness occurs seven days after concrete flooring.

The technology of applying polyurethane varnishes on wooden floors

For the production of work, it is necessary to prepare felt rollers, brushes, if possible, it is recommended to use pneumatic spray guns.

Tools should be washed with solvents, a specific brand is indicated on the packaging in the instructions for the manufacturer of polyurethane varnish.

Very important. Many rollers and brushes at the beginning of varnishing can leave the smallest villi on the surface. Experienced Builders it is strongly advised to roll them several times on pieces of boards before starting work. This will enable the tools to get rid of fragile pile. Keep in mind that it is impossible to get the fallen fibers from the dried coating, you will have to remove the entire layer.

Step 1. Prepare the surface. The floor is cleaned of dust and dirt, vacuumed. If there is a large pile, then wooden coverings should be sanded and re-vacuumed. Lumber must be dry, the presence of greasy and oily stains is strictly prohibited.

Step 2. Gently walk around the perimeter of the room with a brush. The width of the coating line must be at least ten centimeters, this will eliminate the possibility of contamination of the walls. If there are concerns, then it is better to additionally glue the walls near the floor around the perimeter of the room with construction paper tape. After the complete completion of the work, it is removed without problems.

Step 3 Prepare varnish for use. If you plan to use a pneumatic spray gun for coating, then the varnish must be diluted by about 15% of the original consistency. Two-component varnishes are prepared taking into account the recommendations of manufacturers.

Important. It must be borne in mind that two-component varnishes after a slight thickening can no longer be diluted. They should be cooked only in the amount that can be used within 30-40 minutes.

Step 4 Pour a portion of varnish into a special container for soaking the roller and begin careful varnishing. The roller must not be moved quickly, such movements may form air bubbles. If such a problem is found, then in these places you should walk the roller several more times, the movements should be slow and smooth.

Practical advice. Some types of polyurethane varnishes have an unpleasant property - they raise the smallest pile of wood. Read the instructions carefully before purchasing. Raised pile will have to be sanded and only after that apply a second layer. Experienced painters are advised to purchase higher quality varnishes that do not raise the pile. They cost a little more, but by reducing the number of works, the increase in cost is leveled.

Step 5 After the surface dries (stops sticking), a second layer is applied. The number of coatings is at least three.

Carefully monitor the thickness of the varnish, there should not be noticeable marks from the roller or brush on the surface. Special attention give the finishing layer, it will be very difficult to correct the mistakes made. You will have to grind the surface and apply another layer, and this increases the time and cost of coating.

Technology for applying polyurethane varnish on concrete floors

Most often, concrete self-leveling floors are varnished, the final coating with varnish can significantly improve the operational and design characteristics of the floors. For the production of work, you can use the same tools as for wood. The prerequisite is that the surface must be as flat as possible and completely dry.

Step 1. Floor preparation. If necessary, level and remove dust.

Step 2 Primer. If there are no polymers in the structure of the self-leveling floor, then a primer is required, it not only binds the smallest particles of the solution, but also forms an airtight coating on top. Due to this, the consumption of expensive polyurethane varnishes is significantly reduced. The primer is applied in the usual way, taking into account the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 3. Preparation of varnish for use. Professionals recommend the use of two-component polyurethane varnishes for concrete floors; in terms of their physical and performance indicators, they meet the requirements to the maximum extent possible. You need to cook only the amount of varnish that can be quickly used.

Step 4. Application varnish coating. For those who want to have completely exclusive floors, it is recommended to make unique patterns on the surface before applying varnish or use ready-made printed stencils. Such floors can create a spectacular design of rooms in various styles.

Step 5. With a brush, go through all the uncomfortable places, including near the pipes heating system. If the varnish dries very quickly, and experience with the brush is not enough, then it is recommended to prepare only those areas of the floor that can be short term varnish. Then again you need to work with a brush and prepare another section of the floor.

The number of layers is determined empirically, but in most cases there should be at least three. For decorative coating concrete self-leveling floor, it is recommended to select only transparent glossy varnishes of the High Quality. The service life of such coatings is at least twenty years.

Practical advice. Self-leveling concrete floor coverings to increase strength and wear resistance are composed of various mineral and chemical additives, some of which are incompatible with the ingredients of polyurethane varnishes. Before purchasing a large batch of varnish, you need to make sure that they can be used together. Carefully read the instructions for the floor mix and the varnish you plan to use. If for some reason this is not possible, then it is imperative to determine their compatibility by testing on a small and inconspicuous area of the floor.

With the help of high-quality and correctly applied polyurethane floor varnishes, you can improve the appearance of all rooms, increase the life of the coatings, and increase the comfort of living in the premises. A wide selection of different brands and types allows you to select varnishes separately for each room, taking into account its specific purpose. Environmentally friendly polyurethane-based varnishes are approved for use without restrictions by state regulatory organizations.

To protect surfaces from negative impacts, including atmospheric ones, polyurethane enamel is actively used today, which is offered for sale in a wide range. This mixture is a variety of polymers with protective properties. If we compare this composition with other paints, then no other option can compare with polyurethane enamel. Often this composition used as protective coating, as the film has a high margin of safety.

Classification of polyurethane enamels

Polyurethane mixtures are classified according to the material to be coated, as well as the type of application and composition. You can use a brush or a special aerosol spray for application. The scope of use of polyurethane enamel is quite wide, different types can be applied to stone, wood or metal. Before using the polyurethane mixture, the wood does not need to be primed, it must only be well dried.

Specifications

One-component is a composition that is made from polyurethane, pigment and solvent. Among the main characteristics of this mixture should be highlighted:

  • wear resistance;
  • elasticity;
  • harmlessness after evaporation of the solvent;
  • chemical stability.

Polyurethane compounds perfectly adhere to the most difficult surfaces.

Varieties of polyurethane enamels

Polyurethane enamel can be water-dispersion. Among the advantages are harmlessness at the stage of staining and the possibility of dilution with plain water. It is not recommended to paint hydrophobic surfaces with such enamels. These include concrete, stainless steel and plastic.

Polyurethane is represented by a unique chemical modification that allows the composition to be stored in the form of an aqueous non-hardening dispersion. This allows you to get a durable wear-resistant coating. If the floor needs to be painted industrial premises it is recommended to give preference to the composition with organic solvents.

Polyurethane enamel on organic solvents

Polyurethane enamel can be based on, for example, xylene or toluene. For dilution, it is better to use licensed solvents that are recommended by the manufacturer. After gaining strength, which takes two days, such a coating acquires the qualities that are called the main advantages: wear resistance, water resistance, resistance to aggressive environments.

They are also alkyd-urethane, they are used to create an elastic and durable coating that hardens slowly, and also has a moderate odor when stained. The price of such mixtures is significantly lower compared to one-component urethane enamels.

Description of two-component polyurethane enamels

Enamel consists of hardener and enamel, the first of which is added before use. The mixture remains viable for 3 hours, and drying lasts 6 hours. Price this material high, as is the strength of the coating. Such polyurethane enamel for metal can be used for metal structures that will be loaded under production conditions and operated in hot shops with an aggressive atmosphere.

Upper limit operating temperature of this mixture is +80 ° C and can reach 100 ° C. If there is a need to cover a structure that will be operated in fire hazardous conditions, then you should purchase special formulations. For example, Polysteel paint for metal, when exposed to temperature, will form carbonaceous foam, which reliably insulates and resists flames for up to 1.5 hours.

Application of polyurethane enamel "Elakor-PU"

If you need to pay attention to "Elakor-PU", the cost of which per kilogram is 275 rubles. This composition should be used under certain conditions, which are expressed in the absence of capillary rise of water from below. It is also important that the foundation is waterproofed. Residual surface moisture should not be more than 5%. Before applying the composition, the surface gets rid of oily areas. If it's about concrete base, then it should be sanded with a special machine to remove residues old paint, pollution and laitance.

Before applying polyurethane enamel for concrete, the surface must be dedusted with an industrial vacuum cleaner, and then coated with a primer from the same manufacturer. Before use, the mixture is well mixed, and it must be applied with a polyamide roller in 4 layers. The minimum number of layers is 2, the final number will depend on the task pursued. Between layers it is necessary to wait about 4-8 hours.

Application of enamel for concrete "Elacor-PU Enamel-60"

This enamel is a one-component colored moisture-curing semi-gloss mixture, the main advantage of which is the possibility of application at negative temperatures. After polymerization, a wear-resistant hard plastic polymer is formed on the surface, which will be chemically resistant.

Preparation consists in cleaning and priming the surface, which is then enameled at a temperature of -30 to +25 ° C. The temperature of the material itself can vary from +10 to +25 °C. It is also important to take into account relative humidity air, it should not exceed 80%. Before application, the composition is mixed until a uniform color and consistency. To do this, you can use a paint mixer, which is set to a speed ranging from 400 to 600 per minute.

For work, you can use rollers or brushes that are resistant to solvents. You can use airless spray technology. On one layer, the area of which is square meter, it will take about 150 g of enamel. The final result will depend on the smoothness of the surface. Layer-by-layer drying lasts the same amount of time as in the above embodiment.

Conclusion

If you decide to use a two-component polyurethane composition, you should take into account that its application is not carried out on wet surfaces. This requirement is due to the fact that the hardener will react with the liquid to release carbon dioxide, which contributes to the foaming of the surface.

Any watercraft, be it a small boat or a large yacht, must be clean and well maintained. This is especially true for ships that are used for commercial purposes. Constant contact with water destroys even the most resistant and durable materials that need regular protection and renewal. The surface changes its original color, becomes pale and unattractive. The worst option is the inevitable formation of corrosion, which requires the implementation of full-fledged repair work. It is polyurethane paint that will best solve the above problems!
