Can I be stained before oiling? Making wood stain with your own hands: recipes of folk craftsmen

Wood even after the appearance of metal and various modern synthetic materials for construction remains popular and in demand, as it is a high-quality and environmentally friendly raw material. And thanks to huge choice all kinds of paints and varnishes, such as wood stain, it became possible to significantly improve appearance wood products, and, importantly, extend their service life.

Peculiarities

Under the influence of aggressive environmental factors, including different kinds bacteria, mold and insect pests, the wood can warp and start to rot. In order to minimize the risk of such problems, it is very important to take timely care of the wood. Most effective option to combat such circumstances, wood stain is considered. The tool is a liquid composition that sets it the desired tone from a mass of options for colors and shades. This allows you to ennoble the natural color of the wood or radically change it.

Besides aesthetic functions, main feature composition are antiseptic properties. Thanks to the use of the product, wood will be able to serve you twice as long.

Another feature of almost all types of wood stains is the ability to penetrate deeply into the wood without harm to the pattern and texture, unlike enamel or paint.

Wood staining has several advantages:

  • the ability to combine different shades of color;
  • strengthening and preserving the structure of the tree;
  • the service life of products increases;
  • the indicators of wood resistance to moisture increase.

Stain is not only a varnish for wood, thanks to its use, you can create a unique interior in a room or completely transform, at first glance, everyday interior items or furniture.

The following liquids are used as a basis for the production of stain: oil, water or alcohol. This division makes it possible to distinguish several types of this composition.

Views

There are 2 types of means - water and non-water (oil and alcohol) stain.

Water based stain it is offered by manufacturers in a ready-to-use state or as a powder (dry mixture). This type of composition is used most often, since it has a very diverse color range... The color of the powder stain can be easily adjusted, it directly depends on the amount of loose substance, that is, the more there is, the richer and brighter the result will be.

The water-based composition has the advantage of no unpleasant odor, thanks to which the stain can be used indoors. The disadvantages of this type include the ability of the product to lift the fibers during the surface treatment. Due to this, the moisture resistance of the tree is reduced. The time required for the stain to dry completely varies between 10-14 hours, which can also be attributed to the disadvantages of the variety of the composition.

The technology of working with water-based stains requires pre-wetting the wooden surface, then sanding. The composition is filtered before use. Only after completing such preparatory work you can paint a tree. It is not advisable to use this product on resinous woods.

Oil formulations include dyes dissolved in drying oil or oils. You can work with this type of impregnation with any tool. The tool does not raise the fibers of the raw material and does not allow it to be saturated with excess moisture. Using a similar composition, you can get any color and shade, additionally using dyes. They are available in powder form, white spirit is used for dilution.

According to experts, oil stain is the simplest and most convenient to use. Impregnation on oil based very popular among decorators and decorators due to the ability to obtain the desired color.

The pluses of oil stain should include its environmental friendliness, since the most common basis for it is linseed oil. It takes about 2 hours for the surface to dry completely. The composition does not leave stains.

Alcohol based stain Is a dissolved aniline dye. The impregnation is available ready-made or in powder form. the main task composition is to protect wood from the damaging effects of moisture and ultraviolet radiation.

The main advantage of alcohol stain is its ability to be instantly absorbed into wood fibers. The composition dries on the surface after 30-40 minutes.

The disadvantages include the fact that manual method applying the composition to the wood will not work, since the alcohol will evaporate very quickly, which can lead to stains. For work, it is better to use a spray gun.

Along with the above types of wood stains, fundamentally new products began to appear in the assortment of building supermarkets. Modern technologies allowed manufacturers to offer the consumer a water-based acrylic impregnation, as well as a wax composition. New tools were developed to eliminate the main disadvantages of existing formulations.

These products fit well on the surface, most often they are used for painting and treating the floor.

Wax stain restore old wood flooring, it perfectly paints color inconsistencies. In addition to the above characteristics, to positive qualities modern formulations can be attributed to their excellent moisture-protective properties. However, such products are very vulnerable to mechanical damage, so they should be varnished. Acrylic and wax liquids are presented in a wide variety color palette... They emphasize the structure of the wood well.

The disadvantages of acrylic stains include their high cost, as well as the possible formation of spots on the surface when two or more layers are applied.

The main disadvantage of wax compositions is that they are not able to penetrate deeply into wood. The tool only forms protective layer on top of the material. Such a composition should not be used before treating wood with two-component varnishes or polyurethane.

Since the composition perfectly preserves the texture of the wood and protects against negative impact many external factors, thereby extending its operational life, the answer to the question of what is worth purchasing - varnish or stain, becomes obvious.

Color spectrum

Alternative types of stain include white composition... This tool is the most environmentally friendly and inexpensive. Along with this, white stain is presented in a wide variety of natural shades.

Today, a range of similar products for coating and painting wooden surfaces will be able to satisfy the needs of every customer. Such products allow the craftsman to give the wood almost any color. V recent times among specialists, a black stain is in demand, which gives the treated surface the appearance of a black mirror. The technology of applying the black compound requires preliminary polishing of the base.

Shades of gray will help the surface blend harmoniously with the interior of any room. However, the use of this color will be successful only if the walls and interior items in the room are bright. Grey colour can cause apathy, and products painted in this color will be lost against the background of the rest of the decoration.

According to psychologists, the most optimal color for a person is green. He calls positive emotions and is suitable for painting walls and ceilings, as well as for furniture and other things.

The blue color gives expressiveness and depth to the finished product. This stain will work well with whites and yellows.

In addition to multi-colored compositions, there is a colorless impregnation on store shelves, which makes it possible to preserve the natural color of the material.

The final color of the tree depends on the number of layers applied., therefore, experts advise taking final decision only after the test painting. The material for test staining is sanded and smoothed. Next, proceed to the application of the first layer of the composition. After it has completely dried, a second layer is applied, but on a smaller area. The third layer is used to process the material on a piece of wood, which will be even smaller than the allotted space for the two previous layers of wood stain.

When all areas are completely dry, comparing the results obtained, you can choose the color you like.

Manufacturers: review and reviews

Today on paint and varnish market products of foreign and domestic manufacturers are presented.

"NovBytKhim" I is a company that specializes in the production of construction and household chemicals... The assortment of manufactured compositions includes various varnishes, paints, decorative materials, as well as stains on a different basis.

According to the majority of buyers, the compositions for wood from the NovBytKhim company for processing and painting wooden products have strong smell, but do an excellent job of their task, and also dry quickly. Therefore, painting work must be carried out as quickly as possible. The composition lays down quite evenly, the color is uniform.

Trademark Liberon works as part of the V33 company - the international leader in the production of paints and materials for wood surfaces. Products of this brand are popular all over the world, as they are intended for the care of wood, as well as for restoration work with antique interior items and furniture.

French compositions for wood Liberon on domestic market are represented by decorative and protective stains, wood fillers, wax removers.

Consumers note some of the advantages of Liberon wood products:

  • convenience and ease of applying the composition;
  • lack of smell.

The disadvantages of such products include some discrepancy between the declared color and the one indicated on the package.

The most famous German companies that specialize in the production of wood products are Flamingo, Dufa and Caparol.

Caparol has a separate line of wood preservatives.

Compositions produced by Turkish companies are considered no less popular products for the care and painting of wood. The leaders among them are manufacturers Betek, Dyo, Marshall.

Specialists who are engaged in repair work note high quality German compositions for wood.

Only positive reviews have Turkish products for painting wooden surfaces.

Stains can also be classified by purpose - products for internal works and formulations for external use. The main and only criterion for their difference is the presence of pigment in the composition of means for external work, which provides protection against burnout.

When choosing tools, it will be useful to decide on the tool that will be used for surface treatment with the acquired composition. There are wood stains that cover a wooden surface with a brush, for some you may need a spray gun.

For interior work, for example, if the processing of pieces of furniture is required, it is better to give preference to wax or oil compositions. There are almost no volatile compounds... Almost all stains are compatible with paint varnishes.

Alcohol-based products have their own characteristics. They are ideal for tinting furniture, wood products or doors. And for a staircase or parquet, you should choose a different type of wood stain. Alcohol compounds must be applied to the surface with a spray gun, since any error or delay in work will be fraught with the formation of a stain, as a result of which repair or construction works have to start over.

  1. What is it for
  2. Types of stain
  3. Create effects
  4. Work technology
  5. Defect handling

Wood stain combines the function of protecting the surface from dampness and the growth of microflora and gives the product a rich color. However, this is more than a varnish for furniture and interior items - with its help you can create a unique decoration of a room by updating a couple of wooden surfaces.

What is it for

Wood stain does not work miracles, but it works according to a certain principle:

  • The colored or colorless varnish of the wood stain penetrates into the structure of the wood, creating protective film not only above the surface, but also below it.
  • Naturally lifts the wood grain, the structure stands out.

Natural shades of impregnation create an imitation of noble and unusual tree species even on the most common boards, for example, ebony or oak .

Types of stain

Impregnations for wood are divided into types according to the base material for their manufacture.

Water

Stain base water is the most common base ingredient. This is the largest group of impregnations. It is produced ready-made or in powder, which is dissolved in water at home.

Its advantages:

  • The solution is non-toxic due to its neutral base;
  • A wide range of natural shades from the lightest to the deepest dark will help emphasize the naturalness or deepen the tone, make the surface of the product more expressive and noble;
  • Easy to apply, low consumption;
  • Affordable.

A significant drawback is the ability to lift wood fibers, opening the way for moisture.

The solution is to keep the surface wet for some time, then remove the inserted fibers with sandpaper and then impregnate. Another method of preventing wetting is the subsequent coating of the painted layer with varnish.

In addition, the water base dries for a relatively long time.

Alcohol stain

Aniline dye dissolved in denatured alcohol. Wood stain is also sold dry or ready-made.

Its main advantage is the layer, like alcohol, dries quickly. We will attribute the same quality to the disadvantages: in order to obtain a uniform color, it is necessary to use a spray gun; when applied manually, alcohol impregnation often forms greasy stains.

Oil stain

Pigments dissolved in oil (White Spirit) allow wood surfaces to be tinted in all possible shades. Such a tool is convenient for use at home - the oil stain fits well, it can be applied with any tool, it evenly penetrates into the depths, the texture of the tree is not disturbed, a protective film is formed.

Acrylic and wax

Wood stain made of wax or acrylic belongs to a new generation of materials for treatment and protection wooden surface... The impregnation does not only form an insulating film. The colors of the wood stain are enhanced compared to other types - from natural to vibrant exotic. The effect of a bright colored finish with a natural wood structure is called stain.

This technique is used by many designers modern furniture- the appearance of the facades of cabinets made of oak or other species with an unusual color evokes unusual sensations. The main drawback of the material is that the stain is more expensive than its counterparts.

Whitening stain

Not all types of wood need dark saturation, in some cases it is necessary to give a lighter and purer shade. For this, stains based on acids or hydrogen peroxide have been developed. With their help, a bleached timber is obtained, slightly discolored. Thus, the gray surface can be prepared for subsequent painting and processing.

Create effects

Alcohol or water stain can create an imitation of the naturalness of the coating without obvious traces of processing. When choosing a material for protection and painting, be guided by the desired effect: choose a shade of oak, pine or ebony(as in the photo) - the interior will instantly be ennobled.

Ash or oak products do not need to be tinted - leave their structure and shade open, choosing the shade of this species as close to nature as possible.

The properties of each type of wood are different. In order not to be mistaken when buying, pay attention to the flower palette: a composition is applied to the boards of different breeds, where you can see the final result.

Work technology

Staining a wood surface is not a difficult process, but it requires a responsible approach. In order for the varnish coating to be uniform, the consumption is minimal, and the smear lays down evenly, it is necessary to get acquainted with the intricacies of the work.

How best to apply stain on the surface: a master class

  1. Spraying is the most effective method... The coating lays down evenly, even gray wood will instantly acquire a new shade. Reduces the risk of smudges and oil marks.
  2. Rubbing the stain on a porous wood product with a rag will help to get the effect of oak or pine even on the most common product made from non-noble raw materials. The composition must be applied carefully, therefore, quick-drying solutions should be excluded.

  1. A paint roller or swab is useful when covering a small area of wood. Thus, it will be possible to highlight and emphasize the cut pattern, the stain will evenly penetrate deep into the product, creating a protective screen.

  1. The brush is most often used for work - the tool is convenient to use, wood stains lie flat in the chosen direction. The master can play with natural ornaments and play with existing patterns by saturation of color in certain areas.

Which way is better to use and paint - the master decides, based on his skills, such as wood stain and wood surface. To determine which stain in a particular case - when choosing, pay attention to the instructions for the preparation, which describe the conditions of application and operation.

Basic rules for carrying out work

Often it doesn't matter how many layers the wood stain will be applied. The main thing is to observe the technique and take into account some of the nuances:

  • It is necessary to paint the product strictly according to the wood grain. This will reduce the consumption of the solution for smudges and emphasize the pattern.
  • The wood stain should be of a comfortable consistency. Non-aqueous is dissolved with white spirit to optimal density.
  • How many layers to apply is determined by the master, depending on the desired shade and effect. Usually 2-3 layers, each of which is carefully dried.

Make the first layer thin - here it is important to stain gradually and evenly. The layer will create a base for subsequent applications and reduce the consumption of staining solution.

  • To avoid dark areas, varnish should not be applied to the same area twice.
  • When dry, the water stain on the wood lifts the fibers. They are scraped off with a coarse cloth in the longitudinal or diagonal direction.
  • Water and alcohol solutions dry in 2-3 hours, oily - in 2-3 days.

For indoor and outdoor work, the rules are the same.

Surface tinting workshop

  1. Clean the wood from dirt and remove the protruding fibers sandpaper;
  2. Pour the stain, previously diluted according to the instructions, into a small tray. Cooking can be done in small portions.
  3. Take a tool and, gradually picking up the solution on it, distribute the varnish over the wood.

Do not try to take a lot of paint - this will increase consumption and reduce the quality of the coating.

Defect handling

Has the stain-varnish applied incorrectly? There are several ways to fix defects. Master Class:

A leak has formed

We cover the place with varnish, which will dissolve the bottom layer. Now we clean the area with a rag. Work must be carried out immediately after a defect is found.

If the drip is dry, soften it with paint thinner. The seal can also be removed with an emery or a plane.

Stains

How many times the solution was not removed exactly, but still spots formed? The problem may be in the wood itself - the solid wood sometimes absorbs the solution unevenly. In this case, a plane will help. On plywood, you will have to remove all the veneer.

For re cover will fit non-aqueous gel impregnation. It does not penetrate into the depth of the wood, lays down evenly and dries for a long time. Its consumption is reduced due to surface distribution.

To make wood products more decorative and aesthetically pleasing, they are treated with wood stain. The solution changes the tone and emphasizes the texture of the wood. Modern stains have antiseptic properties and can significantly extend the life of the product.

Consider what types of wood stains are, how you can make a composition with your own hands, and what are the basic rules for applying wood stain to wood.

Purpose of wood stain

Stain - a tinting compound that is applied to treated wood to change natural color wood, plywood, furniture, chipboard, fiberboard and MDF. Stain has a second name Beyts.

The special composition penetrates deep into the wood, thanks to which the wood texture is preserved. This effect cannot be achieved from enamel or paint.

Some people use wood stain to hide the true wood species, for example, paint inexpensive pine in the colors of noble wood species. Others use wood stain to refresh the interior of a room or accentuate a beautiful texture. natural material.

With the skillful use of wood stain and a combination of several shades at the same time, you can turn an ordinary wood product into an artistic value.

In addition to decorative functions, some types of wood stains also have protective properties. Wood-protecting compounds include oil-alkyd-based or solvent-based stains. Such stains can protect wood from pests, mold and fungi.

Types of wood stains for wood processing

The main criterion by which all stains are classified is the basis for making the solution. The most common stains are water, alcohol, oil, acrylic and wax based. Consider the features of each type.

Water based stains are available in two forms: dry powdered stains for self-dilution in water, and in a ready-to-use state. Water stains dry long enough, so it will take a long time to get a uniform tone.

The main disadvantage of using wood stain is that during processing the composition raises the wood fiber. On the one hand, this emphasizes the structure of the wood, and on the other hand, it makes the product more vulnerable to moisture. Therefore, before applying the stain, the wood should be wetted superficially, left to soak for a while and thoroughly sanded.

Alcohol stain is a solution of organic dyes with pigments in ethyl alcohol. Alcohol compositions are used for antiseptic and decorative painting wooden products. These stains reduce the build-up of the pile and do not swell the wood.

When using an alcohol stain, it is difficult to achieve uniform color, as the composition dries quickly and stains can form. For tinting small products, such stains can be suitable, but painting the parquet will be very problematic.

Alcohol stains are applied only with a spray (spray gun), and when painting with a brush, the result can be unpredictable

Oil-based stain have many tones and shades. Oil stain contains dyes soluble in drying oil and oils. White spirit is used as a solvent.

Oil stain is the most convenient to use: it can be applied different ways, does not lift fibers and is distributed evenly over the entire surface. Products treated with oil-based stains can be easily refinished and refurbished.

Wax and acrylic stains - last generation toning materials. Stains based on acrylic resins and wax form a thin colored film on the wood surface, which additionally protects the material from excessive moisture. These types of wood stains evenly "fall" on the surface and are well suited for processing wooden floors.

Acrylic stains come in a wide range of tones that can be mixed to produce finer shades. The composition does not have bad smell, non-flammable and suitable for all types of wood. Acrylic stains do not emit harmful fumes and dry quickly after application.

When working with acrylic stain, it is important not to overdo it with the thickness of the layer. A good effect can be obtained by applying no more than 2 layers, if more, then spots may form

Wax stains are very soft waxes. They can be used directly on wood or on a pre-painted surface. Wax stains are applied with a cloth and rubbed over the wood.

Most effective wax stains look in combination with polishing. This technique is often used when finishing turning products, profiles and carvings.

Important! Wax-based stains should not be used before treating wood with acid-cured two-component varnishes or polyurethane

Plant stains

You can give the wood a different shade with the help of plant components.

Stains based on coffee, tea and vinegar

Do-it-yourself wood stain can be made from available tools: coffee, tea and vinegar.

You can give the tree a cherry, brown and dark brown hue with a solution of potassium permanganate: 50 g must be diluted in 1 liter warm water, apply to the wood, and after 5 minutes wipe the surface with a soft cloth. In order to get a brighter shade, the potassium permanganate treatment must be repeated.

After processing the wood with potassium permanganate stain, the surface must be covered protective compound, otherwise the potassium permanganate will fade

Stains with chemical components

If you want to get a permanent color, you can experiment and create a stain from chemicals.

Whitening stains

Bleaching wood allows you to prepare the product for painting and achieve expressive tone. Some tree species acquire unexpected color shades when bleached. For example, walnut, which is characterized by a monochromatic texture with a purple tint, becomes pale pink or scarlet pink after treatment with a bleaching stain. Bleaching the apple tree makes the woods in a noble ivory color.

Stain whitening: photo

Different solutions can be used for bleaching. Some act very quickly, others more slowly.

  1. Solution from oxalic acid... Dissolve 1.5-6 g of oxalic acid in 100 g of boiled water. This composition is suitable for bleaching light woods: linden, white poplar, light walnut, birch and maple. Dirty shades or gray spots may appear on other types of wood. After bleaching, the veneer sheets must be washed with a solution (composition: hot water- 100 g, soda ash- 3 g, bleach - 15). This treatment removes the resin from the surface and raises the pile of the wood.
  2. Bleaching with 25% hydrogen peroxide solution is suitable for most tree species, except lemon tree, oak and rosewood. Products, after treatment with peroxide, do not need rinsing. Peroxide solution bleaches only fine-pored tree species. Wood containing tannins is very difficult to lighten with such a stain. To improve the bleaching process, tanning rocks must first be treated with a 10% solution of ammonia.

Bleaching results for different tree species:

  • birch after bleaching in a solution of oxalic acid gets a greenish tint;
  • ash and oak veneer becomes noticeably lighter after treatment with oxalic acid;
  • When bleached in hydrogen peroxide (the concentration of peroxide is not lower than 15%), an Anatolian nut acquires a golden hue, and a walnut acquires a pink color.

Stain application methods

Wood staining can be done in one of four ways:

  1. Spraying. The stain is applied to the wood surface with a spray gun. Spraying ensures an even distribution of the stain and an even texture.
  2. Trituration. The stain is applied to the wood and rubbed evenly over the entire area of the product. The coating is transformed, the texture becomes pronounced. This method is best suited for porous wood species, and the stain should not dry quickly.
  3. Application by roller or swab. This method is used when processing products with a small area, it helps to avoid streaks and ensures an even distribution of the stain over the surface.
  4. Brush application. If you don't have a spray gun or a tampon, you can use a brush, but this method is not suitable for all types of stain. Experts note that when applied with a brush, the wood gives a deeper, more saturated color than with other methods.

The main principles of wood staining

In order to get beautiful product made of natural material, you must adhere to the basic rules of wood processing.

Stain application: video

Possible defects and their elimination

It is necessary to apply the stain very carefully, since it will be quite difficult to remove the resulting defects.

The formation of streaks. This happens if the stain is applied in a large number and dries very quickly. In this case, you should try to remove the stain layer as much as possible. On the hardened layer, apply another layer of stain, which will soften the drying, and then remove the excess solution with a rag.

If the stain is completely dry, use a paint thinner to remove it. However, all pigment cannot be removed. The top painted layer can be removed with a plane or sandpaper.

Spotting of the product. If the processed wood has an uneven density or twisted, then the absorption of stain may occur unevenly - the color in some places will be richer, and in others it will be lighter.

Spotting on mahogany products or walnut looks attractive, but on cherry, birch, pine, spruce and poplar wood - it does not look natural

Spotting is very difficult to remove. You can remove a layer of stained wood with a plane; in the plywood, you will need to remove all the face veneer.

It is better to prevent the appearance of spotting in advance:

  • test wood - apply stain on an unnecessary piece of the processed product;
  • use a gel stain.

Gel stain is a thick, pasty stain that does not spread or penetrate deep into the wood. In addition, helium stains have a slow absorption rate.
