And before we start exploring ways to update furniture with our own hands, let's find out what decoupage is and how it appeared in our country.

A bit of theory

Decoupage itself is a decoration of furniture using a variety of cutouts, which are combined with special effects. Despite the fact that this technique got its name in France, its homeland is Eastern Siberia.

A little later, this method of decorating furniture began to be used in China to decorate windows, lanterns or small boxes for decorations using paper. But in Venice this art was called “ art of the poor».

This name came about because to decorate furniture with gold, silver or precious stones not every person had the opportunity. But live in beautiful house everyone wanted.

So the poorer strata of the population used this method to improve their homes. But over time, in France, such decoration was elevated to the rank of art, and the rich did not disdain such decoration in their homes.

Now that we have learned what decoupage is, let's find out how to properly decorate a chest of drawers using this amazing method.

Decoupage chest of drawers: rules for decorating a tree

When working with untreated or just old wood on a dresser, the first thing to pay attention to is whether the wood is smooth or not. If the probability of getting several large splinters is quite high, then before starting work it is worth sanding the surface with fine sandpaper.

If there are several chips on the old dresser, be sure to level them with a putty. Also, when decoupage a chest of drawers with your own hands, it is worth covering all the wood with a layer of special varnish.

If the chest of drawers is in good condition, then you should not apply to the preparation special efforts... Just sand the surface and paint over. Attention! If you decide to tidy up one of the elements kitchen utensils, then the decoupage technique should only be subjected to that part wooden surfaces that will not come into contact with food.

Decoupage chest of drawers from ikea

If a few years ago you bought a chest of drawers in ikea and today it no longer fits into your interior, then it's time to start updating it.

In order for the decoupage of a new chest of drawers to be successful with your own hands, you need to prepare the following items:

  • The chest of drawers itself;
  • Acrylic paints in the shades you need;
  • A special varnish that creates the visual effect of wood cracking;
  • Acrylic varnish for coating. We will apply it on the final stage decoration of an old chest of drawers, since loose paper elements can fall off very quickly;
  • Hand-picked paper drawings;
  • Sandpaper, tape and scissors.

After you have collected all the materials you need, you can start directly decorating your furniture. First of all, we unscrew the handles from the cabinets and cover the surface acrylic varnish... Now you need to wait for the varnish to dry. After that we cover the surface with paint.

After the paint and varnish have completely dried, we take several stencils and apply some effects to the surface with a thin brush. For example, if you decide to decorate furniture with motifs with flowers or birds, then thin branches can be drawn on the surface.

By the way, in order to create designer thing like an ikeevsky dresser, you can use regular newspapers. Decorating with them is very simple. To do this, you do not need to paint the tree, but paste it over with newspaper clippings. But it is still worth varnishing after finishing. Otherwise, the newspapers will simply fray and fall off over time.

By the way, in exactly the same way you can do the decoupage of mini chests of drawers. But with such decoration, you need to remember that the details on the mini chest of drawers should also be miniature. By the way, the most interesting option in this case for decoupage of a mini ikea chest of drawers will be the floral motif.

Features of decoupage chest of drawers in Provence style

The first feature of furniture design in this style is the color scheme. The accepted colors in this case are blue, white, olive and yellow. As for the paper details themselves, in the Provence style, the symbols of this amazing French town are most often used - an olive branch, lavender or sunflowers.

The procedure for decorating furniture itself is approximately the same as in other cases. But here you shouldn't use too saturated and “overloaded” colors. The shade should be delicate and easy to perceive, and the flowers should in no case be too large and bright.

I would like to tell you about one more little trick: if you want to make your chest of drawers white, then you can apply a small amount of lavender spray to the surface. And if you also attach paper applications with lavender motifs, then you will have an amazing dresser.

But how to make beautiful droplets, you won't draw each one separately. To do this, you need paint and a stiff toothbrush.

Dresser decoupage is an easy way to breathe into your furniture new life.

If your chest of drawers is covered with cracks, is old or just tired of you - do not rush to throw it away, because it is quite possible to turn it into a new one without spending a lot of money.

This can be done with the help of decoupage - an unusual furniture design technique that came to us from France and quickly fell in love with in Russia.

In the article, you will learn how to restore furniture in this way, and also get a master class on decoupage a chest of drawers.

Photos, videos and instructions will help you cope with this work and give new life to your old things.

The decoupage technique consists in covering furniture and other household items with colored paper, pictures, as well as additional effects such as painting, gold plating, etc.

The decoupage technique gained the greatest popularity in the 17-18 centuries: with its help, merchants counterfeited Chinese furniture, which was fashionable at that time, by covering ordinary furniture additional elements and decorations.

Such a product came to the taste of the poor segments of the population who could not afford real furniture.

Initially, this technique spread throughout Europe under the name "art of the poor", but soon it was carried away by the wealthier segments of the population, and soon it reached the court of King Louis XV.

In addition to gluing furniture, decoupage is also common on other items. Everyday life: often, with the help of decoupage, they decorated clothes, for example, ladies' hats, plates, caskets, mirrors, etc.

Over the years, decoupage has not lost its relevance, but, on the contrary, has come on a par with other professional occupations - for example, such great artists of the 20th century as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso used this technique in their works.

Today decoupage is available to everyone who loves creativity.

A big plus of this technique is that you do not need any expensive tools - just imagination and improvised blanks, for example, old magazines, stickers or pictures that can be purchased inexpensively in specialized stores.

In the photo you can see what the decoupage technique looks like - in fact, it is just furniture and household items pasted over with pictures and varnished.

Naturally, in order for the result to look attractive, and not haphazardly, you need a concept for the future creation.

Can be used already ready-made ideas- for example, decorate your chosen item in the popular Provence style.

To do decoupage, you need pictures that you can find in magazines, newspapers, books, sticker albums, on wrapping paper, postcards, photographs, etc.

To cut them out, you will need scissors or a razor, and to stick them, you will need PVA glue or special glue for decoupage.

To remove the glue, you will need a rag or sponge, and to finish the work, the pasted pictures need to be varnished or with acrylic and polyurethane spray.

As you can see, this technique will not require large expenditures.

Decoupage can be used to decorate literally any item, and it will be of interest to both adults and children, who can use it to decorate their notebooks, diaries, shelves or tables in the room.

However, when it comes to pieces of furniture, decoupage should be approached with great responsibility, because this item will stand in your house for more than one year.

Decoupage furniture is not like that simple task, and below you will receive instructions on how to deal with this, so that the chest of drawers is really pleasing to the eye.

How to restore a chest of drawers using decoupage?

Before you start decoupage of a chest of drawers, you need to decide how you want it to be in the end, as well as choose a coating technique. One of the most simple techniques- paper decoration.

Such restoration of a chest of drawers with your own hands is suitable for those who do not have much experience in decorating furniture, because it is quite simple, but at the same time it looks attractive and original.

The design of the chest of drawers depends on the place of its position and the general interior, for example, with a strict monochromatic design of the office, the chest of drawers can be decorated using ordinary newspapers, but for the children's room it is better to choose something more interesting and bright.

If the room is decorated in a certain style, for example, Provence, then it makes sense to make a chest of drawers in the same way so that it does not get out of the general style.

Watch the mini master class before you get started. Decoupage takes place in several stages.

The first step is to wash and dry the surface of the furniture and remove the drawers and shelves that are inside. If the chest of drawers is uneven, then you can process it sandpaper.

Now you can start painting. You can paint the chest of drawers in whole or in part, depending on your idea.

Then, after drying, the painted parts are processed with sandpaper and the next layer of paint.

Now decoupage itself follows. Take the miniatures you made (newspapers, magazines, etc.) and cut out the images, and then place them on the surface that was previously greased with glue.

The paper can be flattened with a roller or simply by hand. Then you can apply paint along the contour of the drawing, if you want, you can varnish the chest of drawers.

Wait a while and you can collect the chest of drawers.

Decoupage with cloth

As you can see, the first mini-master class is not difficult at all. It will be a little more difficult to decorate the chest of drawers with fabric. In terms of material costs, it will not be more expensive - most likely, there is an abundance of old fabric in your home.

Usually, not the entire chest of drawers is decorated with this technique, but only the drawers, but you can try another method by looking at the design options in the photo.

This mini-master class begins in a similar way to the previous one - you first need to wash and disassemble the chest of drawers.

Before gluing the fabric, you need to make mini-blanks - that is, patterns with a suitable pattern, while they should be several centimeters wider than the front of the drawer.

You can buy ready-made patterns, or choose an example from a photo, or come up with a drawing yourself.

When the fabric is ready, coat the outside of the drawer with glue and place the fabric, then smooth it from the middle so that it is flat.

It is better to attach the fabric folded inside the box with a stapler so that it holds better. After the glue has set, you can assemble the chest of drawers.

The hardest part about this method is making patterns. A mini-master class on video will help you with this.

It is best to choose a fabric that matches the tone of the interior, or in some interesting and popular style, for example, Provence.

Luxurious decoupage option

The following mini-master class will help you make a chest of drawers in truly luxurious style and turn it into the main addition to the interior.

To do this, you will need some blanks: paper for pasting - it is better to buy ready-made, as well as additional decorative elements - for example, paints and gold leaf.

After preparing the chest of drawers, you need to paint all the details, and then apply the ornament of your choice to the doors.

The pattern can be applied using a ready-made template, or watch a master class on decorating a bohemian chest of drawers.

Cover the finished ornament with gold leaf or other material of your choice, and cover the fronts of the boxes with baguette frames.

Then the entire surface must be varnished, and the chest of drawers can be assembled.

If you do not want to design a chest of drawers in a too pompous style, then you can choose something lighter and more modern, for example, Provence, hi-tech, etc.

Aging dresser

The last mini-master class is devoted to how to artificially age a chest of drawers. You can do this in addition to the selected style, or you can choose this design option as the original and only one.

As in other cases, you need to completely disassemble the chest of drawers and process all its parts with sandpaper. Then wipe the surface with a sponge or rag.

Paint the furniture and wait for it to dry a little before you can start aging.

To do this, you will need some ideas and tool blanks - candles, a scraper or a skin will do.

With a scraper, you can create artificial damage on the surface, and rub some fragments of the surface with a candle.

You can apply other options for "aging" by watching a master class or a photo with decoupage. Then you need to fix the workpieces with an additional layer of paint.

Re-sponge the dresser - where the paraffin was applied, the paint will easily come off, and you will get an aging effect.

If you want, you can also add decoupage to the resulting design using paper or ornament. After everything is ready, cover the surface with varnish and you can assemble the chest of drawers.

This style is considered "rustic", but it will perfectly fit into a city dwelling if your apartment is decorated in country or Provence style.

Thus, with the help of decoupage, any restoration of the chest of drawers can be carried out.

To do this, you only need to make inexpensive blanks of which the drawing will consist, choose a design style (Provence, Art Deco, hi-tech, etc.) and put a little imagination and effort - then you can restore old chest of drawers so that it turns out no worse than a new one.

In the post-war years, when Europe tried with all its might to forget about the horrors experienced, its inhabitants enthusiastically embraced the minimalist style in the interior. He assumed parting with grandmother's dressers, sideboards, wardrobes and other old bulky furniture. However, after a few decades, the same interiors were fed up with everything. In the early 80s, a real revolution was made by the Englishwoman Rachel Ashwell, who became a frequent visitor to junk dealers and flea markets. She bought various things and furniture from them for a penny, and then restored and decorated them, including using the decoupage technique. Her works began to be used in great demand, and the style invented by Mrs. Ashwell, which is based on artificial aging, was called shabby chic.

Recently, it has gained great popularity in Russia. In our country, not only interiors are decorated in this style, but also hand-made gifts, and even wedding tables and banquet rooms. Many are also crazy about furnishings with shabby chic décor. They will probably be interested in learning how to make decoupage at home.

Features of technology

The name comes from French word meaning "cut". It involves decorating objects with pictures made of paper or fabric. The cut fragments are beautifully placed on a specially prepared surface, and then filled with varnish.

Master class on creating a dresser in the style of shabby chic

It is quite simple to make such a piece of furniture from old furniture. If you have at least a minimal decoupage skill, you can get to work. However, the dresser must first be artificially aged. At the same time, real defects that appeared on its surfaces during years use and storage, for example in the attic. So, before you make the decoupage of the chest of drawers, you should:

  • paint it inside with paint, for example, ivory;
  • apply a dark stain on top using the technique so that an imitation of scuffs is obtained;
  • make a primer for the chest of drawers outside;
  • sand;
  • paint with black paint the places where they are going to make scuffs;
  • rub dark places with a candle;
  • paint the entire chest of drawers with the main color;
  • apply paint in 4-5 layers;
  • wait until dry.

Embossing

To make the future do-it-yourself dresser decoupage look even more stylish, it can be supplemented. To do this, create a relief pattern. The order of work is as follows:

  • choose a stencil;
  • put on the surface of the chest;
  • attach with pieces of scotch tape, fixing in such a way that the stencil remains motionless during operation;
  • a couple of drops of varnish are added to the acrylic embossed paste to make the pattern stronger when it dries;
  • apply it with an even, smooth layer over the stencil;
  • wait a minute;
  • carefully remove the stencil;
  • after five minutes, they pat the pattern with their fingers so that the relief is slightly smoothed out;
  • in the same way they decorate the chest of drawers from all sides;
  • wait until the paste is completely dry (about 12 hours);
  • carefully sand the pattern, trying not to overdo it;
  • peel off the white paint and wax using a palette knife.

Decoupage chest of drawers

For decoration, the choice of pattern is very important. Napkins are often used. The necessary fragments with a pattern are cut out of them and the uppermost colored layer is carefully separated.

  • cut out the necessary elements;
  • glued to the surface of the chest of drawers with a brush;
  • Mordan is applied to the pattern;
  • allow to dry for half an hour;
  • apply potal, smoothing with a brush;
  • remove the excess with a hard brush (in those areas where Mordan was absent, the potal does not stick, so its excess is easily swept away);
  • to finalize the drawing on a napkin, the borders of the motif are carefully processed with sandpaper so that it becomes thinner to a minimum;
  • paint over them, connecting them to the main surface of the chest of drawers with paint of the main color, carefully applying it with a thin brush.

Patination and installation of fittings

The decoupage of a shabby chic chest of drawers can be complemented with details with the effect of worn gilding. To create it, patina is used. They carefully rub the relief pattern on the surface of the chest of drawers.

They are mounted on metal handles. It is better to choose options made using screws, washers and screws.

If you wish, you can first make a relief pattern using stencils with a special paste, as described above, at the places where the handles are to be fixed, leaving space for the holes. It should also be patinated to maintain general style chest of drawers.

Drawer wrapping: what is required

To decoupage a dresser from the inside, it is best to use the same motif (drawing on a napkin) as on the drawers. It should be transferred to a fabric to cover the inner surfaces.

This will require:

  • the same napkins that were used for decoupage on the outer surfaces of the chest of drawers;
  • cardboard;
  • glue "Moment-crystal";
  • fabric (canvas);
  • special glue for decoupage on fabric;
  • iron;
  • scissors.

A lot of work

Decoupage of old dressers from the inside (on the bottoms drawers) is produced as follows:

  • cut out a rectangle from durable cardboard with the same dimensions as at the bottom of the box;
  • the fabric is measured on it;
  • cut out four rectangles;
  • a motive is pulled out of a napkin;
  • applying decoupage glue to the fabric;
  • impose a motive;
  • press, quickly smoothing with your fingers;
  • dry for 24 hours by hanging the fabric on the dryer with clothespins so as not to damage the pattern;
  • then iron it with a hot iron on both sides, setting the "Cotton" mode;
  • cover the bottom of each of the boxes with a fabric with a decoupage pattern;
  • covered in 4-5 layers with 100% matt varnish.

Chests of drawers in decoupage style will decorate a room in a shabby chic style. The option, the master class for the manufacture of which is presented above, is also suitable for a room in the Provence or country style, if you use it as the main decoration and combine it with more modest pieces of furniture without gilding and noticeable decor.

Work description

  1. If you are using an old chest of drawers, first remove the fittings from it, and then use sandpaper to clean the wood from a layer of paint / varnish.
  2. Remove dust. After that, degrease and disinfect the surface with a cotton pad dipped in ammonia or ordinary alcohol.
  3. Paint all the inside of the dresser with ivory paint. Leave the product to dry completely.
  4. The next step is to apply a dark stain to simulate scuff marks. To do this, use the dry brush technique. Thus, the inner surface of the chest of drawers and drawers will acquire the desired aged look, while they will not become thicker, and the drawers will easily slide out.

The dry brush technique consists in applying a small amount of dye (remaining after wiping) to the convex parts of the product with a stiff brush or brush. Such a decorative technique allows, imitating abrasions, to emphasize the relief and age of the object.

  1. Prime the outside of the dresser with a primer.
  2. When the primer is dry, sand the outside of the dresser with sandpaper. Small roughness will improve the adhesion of the decoration materials to the wood.
  3. On the places of the chest of drawers, where we plan to create a worn effect, we apply black paint. We are waiting for the paint to dry.
  4. Take a regular paraffin candle and rub the black painted surfaces with it.
  5. Cover the chest of drawers with 4-5 coats of base color paint (in our project - ivory).

Apply each subsequent layer of paint only after the previous one has dried. To find out how long it will take, check the manufacturer's instructions for the product you have chosen.

  1. Fasten the stencil with the pattern you like with pieces of masking tape so that it does not move while working with a special paste.

When choosing a stencil, be sure to take into account the shape of the picture and the place in which you want to make a voluminous or flat dresser decor. If the trim will be placed in the corner, then it is advisable to use a corner stencil drawing as well.

  1. Using a palette knife, apply a special acrylic paste to the area of your chosen decorative embossed pattern. Try to make the layer as even as possible.
  1. A minute after applying the paste, carefully remove the stencil.
  2. After another 5 minutes, gently smooth the pattern with light patting movements of the fingers. In the same way, we apply a pattern on all sides of the chest of drawers, on the front parts of the drawers. It will take at least 10-12 hours to completely dry the pattern made of acrylic paste.
  3. Sand the embossed pattern with emery cloth. The quality of this work depends on whether you want a perfectly smooth decor or textured one.

Scuffs and scratches on shabby-style furniture are usually applied after the finish varnish coating... Since this job is not easy, you can do the scratches now.

  1. Use a palette knife to peel off the light-colored paint. Pre-rubbing the surface with paraffin will make the task easier.
  2. We cook from a napkin or rice card individual elements picture.

For decoupage, you do not need to cut out fragments, it is better to carefully pull them out, trying not to damage the drawing. Torn edges more natural looking, easier to decorate.

  1. Using PVA glue (or a mixture of glue and water), glue the fragments into place (top and lateral surfaces, front parts of drawers). Do the job slowly. Starting from the center, moving to the periphery, apply the pattern without wrinkles and air bubbles.
  2. It's time to gild upper part patterned decor. Use a small varnish brush, mordan, hard brush, gold leaf. Apply mordan to the most prominent parts of the volumetric pattern with light movements. After 30 minutes, apply gold leaf to the treated areas. Smooth it gently with a wide dry brush. Remove the leaf. Use a stiff brush to remove excess gold from the pattern.
  3. In the same way, apply gold fragments to other embossed patterns.
  4. Gently sandpaper the visible edges of the designs to make them as thin as possible.
  5. Use a thin brush (ivory paint) to make light strokes over the borders of the pasted floral (or whatever you use) motifs.
  6. Apply a small amount of patina to the sponge, then lightly rub over the surface of the dresser.
  7. Varnish the dresser.
  8. After drying, install new handles in the old holes.

And yet such a wonderful chest of drawers should be beautiful in detail. Decorate using decoupage technique inner surface drawers. You will need fabric, cardboard, napkin, decoupage glue on fabric, iron, Moment glue, scissors.

  1. Prepare 4 pieces of cardboard, one for the bottom of each drawer. The size of the cardboard must exactly match the size of the bottom.
  2. Cut 4 pieces out of a plain plain fabric in a natural gray shade, into which the cardboard will be wrapped.
  3. Before making decoupage on fabric, you need to pull out decorative motifs from rice paper or napkin. It is not necessary for the pattern to match in all the boxes.
  4. Impregnating the fabric with decoupage glue, we attach the pattern to a piece of textile. It is necessary to dry the material without bending the drawing, only in an upright position at room temperature (use hanging on clothespins). The process must take at least 24 hours.
  5. Iron the patterned textiles on both sides with an iron.
  6. Cover the cartons with a cloth. Secure the ends with back side glue Moment.
  7. Glue the decorated cardboard boxes to the bottom of the drawers.

It is not necessary to adhere to a uniform filling of the surface, the board should be textured, and not simple. Smear the putty spots on the board. We are waiting for the putty to dry, and we pass with a roller with white acrylic paint, with a semi-dry brush, along the top of the boxes. Masking tape We glue and separate the places, which we will paint over with blue and red.

We take 2 glass jars and make the colors we need. Add blue and red pigments to the white acrylic paint. The more pigment, the darker the paint will be.

When staining, we see some spotting - it should be so. We need an unevenly colored surface.

We paint again, otherwise the color will be too pale. This is how it should turn out.

Then we take sandpaper, sand the top of the chest of drawers, side edges, and corners.

Then we take a sponge, and begin to rub on the entire surface of the chest of drawers, with the exception of the drawers, walnut-colored toplazer. Especially intensively we process the side parts, the corners of the facade, and the top of the chest of drawers. Next, we begin to stuff furniture nails along the facade of our chest of drawers. We make sure that the distance between the nails is the same.

Then we fasten the handles that we removed at the beginning of work, or others that match the style. We paint with a brush and oil paint around the nails and pens - we make a dark shade. We are finishing the work.
