Rules for installing and replacing sewer system risers. How to replace a sewer riser with your own hands Install a sewer riser

Reading time ≈ 3 minutes

In old houses, cast iron sewer pipes become unusable and require replacement. Realize this operation it is best immediately at the beginning of repairs or when moving to new apartment. It must be remembered that work must be carried out with the obligatory approval of neighbors, depending on what floor you live on. Of course, replacement sewer riser in an apartment with your own hands (the video can be found on this page) is a complex matter, requiring some qualifications and professional knowledge. Let's try to present the material in the form of instructions and series useful tips for the above-mentioned works.

Preparing for work

First of all, you need to select the day of the proposed work, determine its volume and time. Next, it is important to come to an agreement with your neighbors to prevent sewage from entering the apartment. This is especially true for those who live on the lower floors. It is extremely difficult to come to an agreement if it is a multi-storey building.

Next you need to collect necessary tool and materials. The following tool will be needed. Firstly, corner grinding machine(Bulgarian) - probably better small size. Glasses for working with an angle grinder: never neglect safety measures. Several replacement disks for it. Bucket; You may need additional containers. Spatula. Chisels. Screwdriver set. Pipe wrench. Stepladder or sliding staircase. Rags.

You will need the following materials. Firstly, you need to have plaster in the required volume (here the above-mentioned additional containers will be needed) and silicone sealant to eliminate cracks and gaps. Actually, the pipes themselves - you need to decide on their diameter, length and quantity in advance, using the simplest measuring instruments- for example, a flexible meter.

A tee or cross with the necessary connecting parameters; without it, it is impossible to replace the sewer riser. Cuff for sealing (at the junction of new plastic pipes with the old socket). Adapter (1 or 2), compensators (for quick and easy connection), several bends (for adjusting the position of the riser). Of course, you will need steel clamps for fixation.

Dismantling and installation of sewer riser

First you need to understand whether such radical measures are necessary. The riser needs to be changed when cracks, splits are visible, there are leaks, or unpleasant odors. Cast iron is an incredibly durable material, but you need to understand that it also becomes unusable.

Dismantling is carried out as follows. Two cuts are made, one about a meter from the floor, the second 20 cm from the ceiling. A grinder is used for these purposes. Next, using a chisel and a hammer (sledgehammer), chips are made in the places of the cuts. It is important to ensure that the pipe breaks off evenly throughout its entire diameter.

Of course, replacing a sewer riser in an apartment with your own hands is a risky business - it is better to turn to professionals. In particular, chipping is a very important undertaking. It is also very important not to damage the lower bell. A tee is inserted into it, which must be removed or cut off. Often you cannot do this on your own.

There are situations, especially in old houses, when the sewer riser needs to be replaced. In most cases, the need for replacement is due to wear and tear of the pipes. Gradually, durable cast iron risers rust, holes appear in them, from which waste liquid oozes and comes out bad smell. Let's figure out how to change the sewer riser on our own.

The entire replacement of a sewer riser in an apartment or private house consists of two main stages:

  • dismantling the old sewer pipe;
  • installation of a new sewer riser.

Each stage of work will require its own tools and components, the purchase of which must be taken care of in advance.

Removing a damaged sewer riser

Correctly removing a cast iron sewer riser is quite difficult. If possible, it is better to seek help from specialists. But all the work can be done independently. To do this you will need:

  • set of tools;
  • detailed instructions on the procedure for carrying out work.

Tools needed to dismantle a sewer riser

The set of tools used to remove a sewer riser is quite large. Before starting work, you need to prepare everything you need.

So, in order to remove what has become unusable cast iron riser sewer, you will need:

  • pipe cutting tool. The most commonly used are a grinder or a pipe cutter;
  • a chisel will be required to remove cut pieces from the system;
  • a screwdriver needed to remove small pieces of the system;
  • a hammer is used to loosen the remaining sections of pipes;
  • crowbar or nail puller. May be useful for removing stagnant elements;
  • hammer drill Required for grinding cement at pipe joints;
  • a piece of polyethylene to insulate the resulting holes;
  • grinding machine for preparing pipe sections for installation of a new riser;
  • To protect the worker, gloves and safety glasses must be used.

Instructions for dismantling the sewer riser

Before starting work, you need to decide in which area the sewer riser in the apartment will be replaced. It could be:

  • pipe between the floor and ceiling;
  • a section that includes replacing pipes in floors between floors.

In the latter case, replacing the sewer riser is not possible without prior agreement with the neighbors, since some work will have to be carried out in their apartments. Most often the first option is chosen.

At the first stage of dismantling, it is necessary to turn off the water throughout the riser. Make sure no one is using the drain. Then carry out the work according to the instructions:

  1. At a distance of 80 cm from the tee and 10 cm from the ceiling level, it is necessary to make 2 horizontal cuts using a grinder, approximately half the diameter of the pipe.
  2. Using a hammer and chisel, hit first the upper notch and then the lower one. After these steps, it should split and its middle part can be easily removed.
  3. Part of the pipe located under the ceiling is covered with film. Next, we proceed to disassemble the lower part of the riser, containing the tee and other fittings.
  4. Using a crowbar or a nail puller, you can try to loosen the tee fastening. If this procedure can be completed, the fitting is removed. In the case of a thorough connection of the tee, a hammer drill is used, with which the cement is removed at the joint.
  5. Using a screwdriver or chisel, pieces of cement are removed and the tee is dismantled.

Situations may arise when all of the above manipulations do not help remove the tee. In this case, the fitting is cut with a grinder at a distance of 3 cm from the socket.

  1. The remaining sections of pipes are prepared for installation of the sewer riser. To do this, the ends of the pipes are removed from excess contaminants and processed using a grinding machine.

Correct dismantling of the sewer riser ensures reliable and durable installation of new pipes.

Installation of a new sewer riser

Sewer riser apartment building- the design is complex. Before starting work, you must purchase all components of the system.

Equipment and tools for installing a sewer riser

To replace the sewer riser in an apartment yourself, you will need:

  • plastic pipes with a diameter of 110 cm;
  • with the necessary bends;
  • rubber cuffs for arranging fastening between plastic and cast iron;
  • compensation pipe used to transition between a cast iron pipe and a plastic one;
  • fastenings for sewer riser. Most often, ordinary clamps are used;
  • liquid soap, which facilitates the entry of pipes into the connecting elements;
  • vertical level.

Assembly and installation of sewer riser

Assembly and replacement of the sewer riser in the apartment is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling in the following sequence:

  1. Rubber cuffs are inserted into the cast iron socket and the end of the pipe near the ceiling.

  1. A tee is connected at the bottom, and a special adapter is connected at the top. The connections must be tight, otherwise leaks are possible. If the tee moves freely, then the connection is sealed using flax or special silicone.

  1. A plastic sewer riser in a multi-storey building must be firmly fixed. At the next stage, clamps are installed to secure the pipeline.

If indoors standard ceilings, then 3 clamps are sufficient, which are located in the lower, upper and middle parts of the pipeline. Higher ceilings will require additional fixings.

  1. Preliminary assembly and fitting of the system is carried out.

  1. A compression pipe is lowered into the tee (the connection between cast iron and plastic in mandatory equipped with a compression pipe).
  2. All pipes are connected to in the right places and finally installed.

  1. The sewer riser is attached to the wall.

The sewer riser in the apartment building you can run and check all pipe connections for leaks.

If you strictly follow the instructions and carry out all the work carefully and correctly, then your self-installed sewer riser will last a long time.

At first glance, it seems that it is very difficult to replace a sewer riser in an apartment on your own. It's actually not that scary. It will be very good if this article helps you understand the process of replacing the riser, and carry out all the work without resorting to the expensive help of specialists.

In old apartment buildings, cast iron pipes were always used to install the sewerage system. The main problem of such a pipeline was the need for regular repairs, since the structure quickly became unusable with active use. In addition, the replacement of the sewer riser in an apartment building was also carried out during major renovations.

Nowadays you can find on the market large number pipes made from more modern materials, which have a number of advantages compared to cast iron. For this reason, many homeowners choose to replace cast iron pipes with plastic products. From this article you will learn how to change the sewer riser in an apartment and what materials will be required for this.

Why change the sewer riser in an apartment?

Since the sewage system in apartment buildings is under heavy load, it has to be periodically repaired (read: ""). The most common problem that can arise is leaking pipes. Of course, you can always repair a small crack in the pipeline by calling a technician who will apply a clamp to the damaged area. If you wish, you can do this work yourself, but this work has a significant pitfall - such repairs will be temporary. After a certain period of time, the system will completely break through, and then there will be many more problems.

For self-repair sewer riser will require the following tools and materials:

  • a corresponding piece of plastic pipe;
  • cross or bend;
  • rubber seal;
  • compensator;
  • revision (if any on the old pipeline);
  • shaped pipe (only needed if the diameters of the new and old pipe vary);
  • riser mounts;
  • perforator;
  • hammer;
  • soap;
  • marker or pencil;
  • building level.

Replacing a sewer riser in an apartment is usually carried out along with a major renovation of the apartment. If possible, you should do exactly this, changing the riser at the same time as replacing the plumbing and installing new pipes. Most often, replacing sewer pipes from cast iron to plastic is a completely deliberate and correct decision.

This process has many advantages:

  • firstly, in this case you can save on calling a specialist, since he will not have to come several times;
  • secondly, it is much easier to agree with neighbors once than to turn off the riser every time you need to replace part of the sewer system;
  • thirdly, in this case it will be possible to save a lot of time and effort, which is perhaps the most important advantage. Read also: "".

Replacing a sewer riser

Before replacing the sewer riser in an apartment, you need to understand the sequence of work. First stage construction work– dismantling of the old pipeline. It is easier to carry out this work on the top floor, but if repairs have to be done at any other level, you will have to turn off the sewer riser in the apartment. To do this, you will have to contact the local service authority so that the water can be officially turned off - otherwise problems may arise.
Replacing a sewer riser in an apartment in optimal option must be carried out completely, taking into account those parts that are in interfloor ceilings. In this case, replacing sewer risers in an apartment building should be accompanied by punching two holes around it - above and below. After this, the pipe can be dismantled for further replacement. Of course, such work will require the consent of the neighbors, and if it is not obtained, then you will have to limit yourself to replacing the riser in your apartment, along its entire height.

In any case, after removing the old pipeline, you can install a new one. To connect a sectional smooth pipe located vertically, it is necessary to insert each section into the socket that is equipped with a rubber cuff. To improve the connection, soap is usually used: after treatment, the pipes are much easier to install.

The sockets must be positioned in such a way that their direction corresponds to the direction of movement of the drains. That is, if the slope of the pipeline leading from the plumbing is at the proper level, then the smooth ends of the plastic pipes must be mounted in those sockets that are located below (more details: ""). All this will prevent clogging of the structure with small particles of waste.

When installing a sewer riser, it is worth considering necessary connections for all plumbing that is in the apartment. The connection of bends and tees to the riser is carried out according to the same principle by which the main pipeline is connected. More details can be seen in the photo or read in a separate article on connecting devices to the sewer.

Installing a new riser usually begins with installing a tee or elbow at the bottom. This element is inserted into the socket of the sewer pipe. Next, the resulting joint needs to be sealed, for which sealant or winding is usually used. The gap between the tee and the vertical pipe cannot exceed 10 mm. In addition, we must not forget that plastic pipes cannot be equipped with sliding couplings, since only expansion joints are suitable for such cases.

Next, you need to install the mountings for the riser. The clamps are attached to the wall with dowels, but only if there is a gap of no more than 5-7 cm between the wall and the riser (more details: " "). When this distance is greater, a board soaked in an antiseptic, which can be used as drying oil, is first attached to the wall. If desired, the board can be replaced with metal corners or other materials. The upper clamp should be installed as close to the socket as possible, and the lower clamp should be located as close to the shaped pipe as possible. IN standard apartments It is enough to use three clamps, and the riser will hold securely enough.

When all elements of the sewer system and plumbing fixtures are installed and connected, it is necessary to check the functionality of the system. To do this, you need to drain the water from all devices and look at its movement. No leaks and good speed churn indicates a job well done. At this point the work is completed, and if desired, the riser can be disguised using decorative lining, which should be made collapsible in case of subsequent repairs.

Conclusion

Replacing a sewer riser in an apartment is done infrequently and does not pose a particular problem, but if you have no experience in construction, it is better to use the services of professionals so that the quality of the work is high enough, because good master knows how to replace a sewer riser in an apartment. Be that as it may, sometimes it is necessary to change and repair the sewer system in an apartment, and correctly performed work will ensure comfortable use of this system.

Replacing the sewer riser with my own hands

Replacing a cast iron sewer riser with a plastic riser is not very cheap, so you need to decide exactly whether it is necessary or not. If there are no leaks, cracks, deep chips or other deformation on the cast iron structure, there is no point in replacing it. Cast iron itself is very durable material, if used correctly. So replacing a sewer riser made of this material is only rational if it has begun to rot.

Materials and tools

If, nevertheless, replacing the sewer riser is necessary, then you need to prepare the materials and tools that will be needed during the work process:

  • rubber cuff for sealing a plastic pipe in a cast iron sewer socket;
  • a plastic cross with a branch in the desired direction or a tee adjusted to the desired angles;
  • a pair of pipes with a diameter of 110 mm of the required length;
  • 110 mm compensator for easy connection of plastic pipes;
  • plastic adapter with rubber cuffs for connecting the top tube;
  • metal clamps for attaching the sewer riser to the wall;
  • 2-4 pcs. plastic bends with a diameter of 110 mm with an angle of 45° in case it is necessary to shift or level the riser;
  • a pipe cutter or grinder and several spare discs for it;
  • semicircular mandrel for lowering the expansion pipe;
  • various screwdrivers;
  • chisel;
  • ladder;
  • bucket;
  • silicone sealant;
  • liquid soap;
  • skin;
  • crowbar or nail puller;
  • plumb line or level;
  • sticky tape or marker;
  • safety glasses.

It should be remembered that the hatch for sewer cleaning of replaced risers must be preserved.

Replacement of cast iron sewer: start of work

If the riser replacement does not take place in a private house or on the top floor multi-storey building, then you need to warn your upstairs neighbors not to use the sewerage system or drain during the repair work.

It is very important to understand that correct installation new risers always depends on how correctly the old ones were dismantled.

Scheme of repair of a sewer riser with replacement of a damaged fitting: a) before repair, b) after repair 1,4 parts of the riser, 2 – compensation pipe, 3 – damaged fitting (tee).

Pipes are cut either with a pipe cutter, or, in its absence, with a grinder, with the obligatory use of special safety glasses in both cases.

Two cuts are made in a horizontal plane around the circumference of the pipe, but not parallel, but converging at one point, that is, in the shape of the letter “V”. It is not necessary to completely cut the pipe, as this may cause the disk to become pinched due to subsidence of the upper part of the riser, which can lead to rupture of the disk and subsequent serious injury to the repairman.

Next, the wedge is driven into the cut, due to which part of the riser is separated. In the absence of a wedge, vertical cuts are made at the risers, but not all the way, so that the fragment cannot get into sewer system. After this, using a chisel or a screwdriver, the resulting piece is broken, and the resulting chips are knocked out with a hammer to completely complete what was started. The hole formed after these manipulations must be covered with a rag.

When making the top cut on the riser, you must remember to leave a piece of such length that it will be convenient to press on the shaped part during installation. Having decided on the remaining length, the pipe should be marked at the location of the future perpendicular cut; you can simply stick tape on it so that it does not appear skewed. After the cut is made, a strong blow is applied with a hammer to the bottom of the pipe and the riser should break exactly along the cut line with a grinder or pipe cutter. Cast iron will definitely crack where it is needed.

It is possible that “teeth” will remain at the site of the pipe break, and in order to avoid injury from them while preparing the pipe for replacement with plastic construction, it is necessary to eliminate all irregularities. This can be done using grinding disc all the same Bulgarian.

To remove the lower part of a cast iron pipe and replace it, you first need to check the strength of the connection of its elements. To do this, you should try to swing the upper section of the pipe, but very carefully, otherwise there is a possibility of damage to the lower bell. If the pipe is swung even slightly, then this already indicates that all the elements can be pulled out. Also, the tee can be dismantled using a nail puller or crowbar if it is even a little loose. It will also have to be replaced, as will the riser.

In the case where the tee sits quite rigidly, you will need to gouge the joint, but as carefully as possible, all the time checking by rocking whether its strong fit has weakened.

If the situation and location allow, then the joint can be hammered with a hammer drill with a thin drill installed on it without a pobedite tip. In this case, you need to periodically stop and manually clear the mortar at the joint with a chisel or a screwdriver. If this does not help, then you will still have to use a pipe cutter or grinder. The cross should be cut 2-3 cm above the pipe socket.

Communications in most houses on the secondary real estate market are worn out by more than half. The decision to replace pipes is made for different reasons, but the actions have to be taken in approximately the same way.

Replacing a sewer riser in an apartment raises a number of significant issues. The first thing you should find out is who should carry out the work and at whose expense. Secondly, what and how to do if you have to change the sewer riser yourself.

Partial replacement of the sewer riser, when changing a section of communications in a separate apartment, may be necessary in the following cases:

  • the sewer pipe became unusable and leaked;
  • the owner or tenant of the property decided not to wait for leaks, but to start with overhaul and replacement of pipes;
  • The sewer riser is being replaced as planned.

Sewage in multi-storey buildings traditionally assembled from cast iron pipes. The material is reliable, but in most homes it is already so old that it leaks and needs scheduled replacement or urgent repairs.

Pay attention! There is a clearly defined procedure for replacing a sewer riser, which is defined in regulatory documents, which spells out the responsibilities and rights of home owners or tenants.

Who is obliged to change the sewer riser?

The state regulates the rules for maintaining property in apartment buildings, including the replacement of the sewer riser, since the riser itself and the drain from it to the first joint are the common property of the house.

Regulatory documents:

  • Government Decree No. 491 of August 8, 2006 on the maintenance of common property.
  • Manual on repair and maintenance of common property dated April 2, 2004.
  • Resolution of the State Construction Committee of September 27 No. 170 on standards technical operation housing stock.
