In today's material I would like to introduce you to the process of creating a dining table from oak boards. These ideas do not pretend to be a full-fledged master class, it is rather information for inspiration for wood craftsmen. I know that for many men, just looking at a product is enough to map out a plan of action in their heads. Therefore, the current oak table is just for such craftsmen.

The material from which this table was made lay idle for a long time in the backyard of an American man. It lay there for so long that no one remembered exactly when this oak beam appeared there.

However, one fine morning, the master’s hands finally reached these oak beams. One of them was cut at a local sawmill into boards for a tabletop. I won’t tell you the exact dimensions, but I suspect that it is about 50x200 cm, the length of the board is about 2 meters.

The boards were sawn and then tongue-and-groove end-to-end to create the tabletop. There's not much to say about technology. Drill holes in the sides of the boards, drive the dowels into the glue, then glue the sides and press the boards together.

When the boards were glued together to form a single panel of tabletop, the man sanded the top of the tabletop.

And then I cut off its ends evenly. I did not trim the sides in order to leave the textured elements of the wood.

All uneven surfaces on the tabletop were filled with epoxy and then sanded, after which the wood was varnished.

This is how the oak board tabletop turned out in the end.

Then the table frame was made with a transverse horizontal brace, also from oak boards.

Finally, the tabletop was installed on the frame.

The result is a massive oak dining table, made with your own hands. By analogy, you can make a table from any other board you have. however, I still recommend giving preference to wood with texture.

Table manufacturing process:

Step one. We decide on the volume of materials and dimensions
The first thing you need to do is figure out what size your countertop will be, and also consider the amount of material you have. In total, the author had 9 boards to make the table, while he used 7 pieces to make the tabletop. They were chosen depending on the design so that everything looked beautiful and harmonious.







Step two. Assembling the tabletop
Measure the required length of the boards and cut them exactly to the same length. To assemble the table, the author actively uses wood glue; the tabletop is also assembled using glue. To solve this problem, you have to make the joining parts of the boards perfectly even; they must fit without gaps. You will also need long clamps so that the whole thing can be pulled together later.



































The author first glues the tabletop in groups, since the entire panel of seven boards is quite wide. First, you can glue a group of three boards and another of four. In the end, the whole thing is glued together. Apply glue, tighten with clamps and let dry. We immediately remove any protruding parts of the glue so that they do not dry out. After assembly, make sure that the plane is perfectly flat. Dowels can be used to strengthen the structure at the joints.

Step three. Making legs
The author paid attention to the legs of the table special meaning. They were made from various types of wood and were designed to be voluminous. In addition, the legs have a bend that can be cut with a band saw.































Each leg consists of three boards, cut them to the same length. There is a gap between the boards; it is formed due to the fact that there are spacers made of boards in the upper and lower parts of the legs between the boards. In total you will need 12 boards and 16 spacers. As soon as the blanks are ready, the legs can be glued together. Apply glue to the workpieces and tighten the legs with clamps. Let's leave the whole thing to dry.

When the glue dries, we turn to the help of a jigsaw or other band saw. We need to cut out the bends on the legs, there shouldn't be any special problems here.

When the legs were ready, the author sanded them with 240-grit sandpaper. Finally, they can be soaked in oil, since this will be harder to do after assembling the table. Oils come in different colors, prices and quality, choose according to your taste.

Step four. Frame assembly
The table frame consists of four boards that are attached to the legs. On each leg at the top there is a special fastening place cut out in the form of triangles. We drill holes in the boards for screws and screw them to the legs. If desired, you can additionally use glue.
That's it, now we have created something that already stands on legs!
















Step five. We are finalizing the tabletop
The tabletop must be perfectly flat and have rectangular shape. If this is not the case, we take it circular saw and cut off the excess. Finally, the author processed the edges using a router. You can make them perfectly smooth using sandpaper. It is also highly recommended to smooth the corners of the tabletop so that they do not cut your hands while sitting at the table.






Surely, the outer part of the boards will not be perfect; there will be defects on it. This could be knots, insect activity, or even the wood may be rotten in places. But this can all be fixed, we clean the problem areas with sandpaper and prepare epoxy. We apply epoxy resin for defects and let dry. At the end, the whole thing is sanded smooth, and the material turns out perfectly even and smooth.







Step six. We fix the tabletop, sand it, apply oil
The first step is to screw the tabletop to the frame with legs. To do this, place the tabletop on the table and place the frame upside down. For fastening, the author uses mounting angles and wood screws. Drill holes in in the right places and screw in the screws. There should be at least three corners on each side.












We turn the table over and start sanding. To sand such a plane and sand it evenly, it is advisable to use a power tool. A manual tape would work well here. grinding machine or orbital.

First, take coarse 80-grit sandpaper and level the entire plane. Then we reduce the grain size to 120, 180, 240, 320, 400... and make the surface perfectly smooth.

This can also be done manually, although it will be much more difficult. For convenience, we attach the sandpaper to a block and go into battle!

Once the entire table is sanded, including the legs, saturate it with oil. The oil protects the wood well from moisture, which is very useful since the table is used for eating food. The oil also looks great, wood looks natural when used. Apply the oil until the wood absorbs it. After this, if desired, you can polish the countertop.
Instead of oil, the table can be coated with varnish, although it will be slippery, which is not very pleasant.

Step seven. Everything is ready!

The owner decided to start with what seemed to be the simplest, but at the same time complex product - a table. It had to be outside for a whole year and, importantly, its design would match the entire interior of the gazebo.

While looking for an oak board, I came across an advertisement for the sale of timber at a good price. I called the seller and drove 35 km. However, when he saw a stack of oak beams overgrown with moss and rooted into the ground, the forum member was taken aback. The timber was prepared by the owners back in the 80s, but they never needed it. At first he was upset, but later it turned out that it was in vain: after the logs were cut into boards and beams of the required cross-section at the sawmill, a tree of amazing beauty was revealed to the owner.

When the material was ready, the forum member conducted several experiments on finishing– I wanted to achieve a beautiful coating that would protect the wood from moisture. Ott treated the wood with colorless Belinka glaze and linseed oil, and then exposed it to aggressive environments: poured water, vinegar, soup, orange juice, vodka.


“Belinka” turned out to be more durable, but the drying oil looked more natural and beautiful. In addition, this coating had one more advantage: discoloration under the influence of any liquids can be corrected by wiping the wood a couple of times a season with a cloth soaked in drying oil.


Then the forum member did a test fitting and marked all the legs.

After the onset of cold weather, the work had to be moved indoors. A weight tie-down strap was used for assembly. The owner glued the legs with elastic polyurethane adhesive-sealant. I pulled everything together with a belt and tapped the connections. rubber mallet. After hardening (after three days), I carefully cut off the excess glue.

The wood was pre-treated with a mixture water stains walnut and oak colors (1:1), then soaked in drying oil mixed with turpentine in the same ratio. I achieved the color of greasy wood, darkened by time.

After drying, I went over all surfaces with 180-grit sandpaper to remove the lint and “rub” the edges and texture. With the onset of spring, the table was taken out and collected. The forum member connected the boards with a gap of 2-3 mm, leaving allowances for swelling. Fastened with oak blocks.


This connection will allow the board to “play” to the sides a couple of millimeters without splitting.


Finally, the owner treated it with several layers of a weak solution of drying oil in turpentine. The table turned out to be about 84 cm high, so the legs had to be shortened.

Bench

Ottt made the corner bench without a back in two weekends. The legs were made from a 7 cm block. For the seat, a 25 cm board was used. Since it was thin, the owner made five jumpers on the long side so that the product could support all the guests.

Blanks: I made the eyes with a milling cutter to fit the template, and then glued them with polyurethane sealant.

While the glue was setting, I pulled it in with the corners. In order to save effort and time, I attached the seat with screws into drilled and countersunk holes. I puttyed it and treated it with walnut and oak colored stain, and soaked it in drying oil and turpentine.


Subsequently, this turned out to be a better solution than varnishing. When the table was scratched with screws, the forum member soaked the damaged areas with natural drying oil. Even without sanding, the scratches became less noticeable. In addition, the table was made for the street, and any film coating would begin to peel off under the influence of seasonal fluctuations in humidity in the wood.

The edge on the tabletop is secured with an iron. The edge is ironed with strong pressure and slowly enough so that the glue has time to melt. Wooden table

Tabletop material: boards

Boards are an intermediate material for countertops both in price and aesthetics. A table made of boards is suitable for country house or a country style interior, and it is easier to assemble than a solid wood model.

For work, boards made of spruce or pine are most often chosen. Less commonly used are oak, walnut or birch boards. Their thickness should be the same, the length can be adjusted during the manufacturing process of the table.

Assembling the basic table model

First, a frame is prepared that will hold the remaining elements. Four boards of equal length are placed at the same distance. The end parts are laid out perpendicular to them. The legs are secured with a bolt (no longer than 3.5 cm). The table is assembled according to the following scheme:
