Cross stitch on pillows has long been famous in Ukrainian culture. Such pillows are traditional Slavic peoples were considered to protect the home from evil spirits. Nowadays, cross-stitching of pillows used to decorate the interior of a residential building is popular.

Ukrainian embroidery combines all kinds of colors, illuminating the surrounding space with brightness and unusual beauty. Professional needlewomen decorate the entire home textiles, thus decorating your apartments. Cross stitch is a simple embroidery technique. It is not difficult to learn how to create elements of such creativity. The main thing is that beginning needlewomen have great desire, patience and perseverance. Having a stock of such professional qualities, you can embroider a pillow and decorate your room with it.

Required materials

Before starting the work process, you need to study the techniques used in embroidery and prepare the working material:

  • thick fabric for pillow
  • padding polyester
  • fabric for the back wall of the pillowcase
  • ornament scheme
  • outline
  • sewing thread
  • embroidery thread
  • wooden hoop
  • darning needles
  • tailor's and small scissors

Embroidery can be done on different fabrics, the structure of which resembles squares:

  • canvas
  • cotton

Threads are selected at the request of the embroiderer. Having prepared everything necessary for creative ideas, let's study step by step execution cross.

Cross stitch techniques

There are several ways to apply crosses to fabric.

The first method is to embroider the entire cross. Using this method, crosses are applied both vertically and horizontally. Let's get acquainted with the vertical execution of the stitch.

Vertical stitch method

  1. The procedure begins by inserting a needle and thread into the upper right hole.
  2. Next it is stitched diagonally to the lower left point.
  3. We climb up from the inside out.
  4. We descend diagonally into the lower right hole.
  5. After one point we go up.
  6. The thread passes diagonally into the lower left hole of the next square.
  7. The following steps are repeated.

On the wrong side of the work, you get two even straight lines parallel to each other.

Horizontal stitch method

Crosses are embroidered horizontally in the following steps:

  1. The stitching starts from the top right to the bottom left hole.
  2. From the lower left corner it goes to the upper left point.
  3. Next, the needle and thread are inserted into the lower right hole.
  4. The needle comes out diagonally at the top right point.
  5. The procedure is repeated again.

While working, we observe the direction of the stitches - they should lie in one direction, then you will get an aesthetically beautiful and correct pattern. The reverse side of horizontal embroidery is distinguished by oblique lines.

Step-by-step execution of oblique stripes in one direction, then in the other. This method performed in the following steps:

The reverse side of this embroidery is distinguished by small stitches.

Having learned how to make cross stitches, we begin to embroider wonderful sofa accessories. Cross-stitched items look original in any room of a residential building. Cushions are chosen to match the furniture, wallpaper or curtains and represent a bright accent that attracts attention.

Sofa cushions are decorated with a variety of ornaments chosen by the needlewoman. Often craftswomen use a pattern of embroidered chains closed together. It is in this product that the main, central area of the pattern is combined with a border on the side. The embroiderers also depict flowers in the center, and the edges are decorated with border patterns. The combination of various images looks quite good and attractive.

How to create a pillow

To create a unique pillow with original patterns, we immediately make a pillow, and then sew an embroidered pillowcase on it.

Sewing the pillow itself is easy. Let's consider the detailed step by step instructions creative process.

Step 1

We take a dense material, cut out two lengths of our product with seam allowances.

Step 2

We sew three and a half sides of the future product using a sewing machine.

Step 3

Cut out the padding polyester to the required size.

Step 4

We place the artificial filler in a sewn pillowcase.

Step 5

Sew up the remaining hole using a blind stitch.

The interior item is almost ready. All that remains is to decorate it with a delightful pillowcase embroidered with a cross.

Before decorating the product, we think about what fabric we will use. You can use the same fabric for the entire pillowcase, perhaps reproduce the ornament on the canvas, and decorate the back part with a different material structure. Everything depends only on the wishes and creative fantasies of the needlewoman.

Let's start cross stitching the pillow

The schematic drawing on paper is divided into squares ten by ten cells. To make the ornament perfect, use a special marker to draw the same squares on the canvas as in the chosen pattern. We mark the center of the pattern by folding the canvas in half twice and begin embroidering from the mark we made.

Having finished the embroidery process, we prepare the back of our pillow:

  1. To do this, using sharp tailor's scissors, a piece is cut out of the selected fabric, identical to the embroidered canvas with allowances for basting.
  2. We apply canvas and fabric, sew up three parts with a sewing machine - the top and two sides.
  3. For the rest bottom part sew pillowcases with a snake.
  4. The product is turned inside out. The exclusive pillowcase is ready. The final step is to place the made pillow in a new and beautiful pillowcase.
  • I would like to note that interior pillows are embroidered at more dense tissues and are completely stitched with a cross.
  • Sleeping pillows are usually made of soft fabrics and embroidered with simple designs.
  • Cushions intended for decorating apartments are complemented with soutache cord or tassels.

Instead of a zipper, buttons and ties made of satin ribbons are often used. Craftswomen use their interesting and unusual ideas, which are never repeated. Such a hobby as cross-stitching a pillow brings joy and a great mood. Handmade items are great as gifts for Christmas. significant dates, because they convey warmth and tenderness to the person being gifted.

master class 5

I am completing "Wild Boar", Eva Rosenstand
35.5x29 cm, Brittney fabric 28 ct

Everything you need

Fabrics: brick-colored gabardine for the “internal mat”, some kind of vigorous finishing synthetic gray-blue check for the “external mat” and backdrop

Embroidery

Thin dublerin (fabric adhesive lining)

Gold cord and four gold tassels

Sew on interior passe-partout .

I pin strips of fabric with pins, then stitch them. I sew the horizontal ones first, then the vertical ones.

I stitch along the embroidery, retreating one cell from the edge of the embroidery. So that there is a gap between the embroidery and the mat for sewing on the lace.

Smoothing to back side double embroidery to strengthen the inside.

I'm attaching external passe-partout , also first horizontal stripes, then vertical.

I stitch from the side of the fabric strips. Of course, after each line there is an ironing.

The result is this semi-finished product . Ready for sewing on lace and tassels

I first sew the lace along the embroidery by hand.

Then the lace is between the two mats, and at the same time I sew on the tassels.

I cut out the backdrop to the size of the top of the pillow and sew in a zipper.

You can find tutorials on how to sew in zippers on the pages of sewing enthusiasts on the Internet. A zipper is not necessary, the fastener can be made with Velcro, a button, hooks, strings, or no fastener at all... Having inserted the pillow, sew it up with a hidden seam. And we sew the top and back together with a stitch around the perimeter. Turn it inside out.
We push in a pillow of suitable size.

And also master classes on design

Sewed from company fabrics Peppy. I have already sewn from them, I liked how they worked and were quite affordable. I ordered from the Leonardo online store. I would like to note that I made the right decision with the colors of the fabrics: they came in exactly the shades that I needed, even though I looked at them not in person, but on the monitor screen. I consider this a huge plus in Peppy’s karma!)

The same fabric was used for the back of the pillow, so 2 scraps were needed:

This is the fabric I used for the bias tape:

How to embroider a pillowcase on a pillow (master class)

And now that the embroidery is finished, washed and ironed, you can proceed directly to sewing the pillowcase.

The diagrams below provide examples of the most simple ways sewing pillows from scraps. Since I had no experience in sewing pillowcases, I chose from simple ones. IN in this case I settled on option 2.

Having measured the finished pillow and estimated the final size of the embroidery, you need to calculate how long and wide the fabric strips will be. Because everyone has their own sizes, precise recommendations I can't give it. Carefully calculate your measurements yourself.

To make it clear to you how to calculate the length and width of a strip, I made a symbolic drawing. It shows the overall dimensions of the pillowcase and the sizes of the stripes (all 4 stripes are the same!). Dotted lines indicate seam allowances.

Pay attention to the allowances! To each strip, one short and one long side, you need to add 1 cm seam allowances. Based on this, I cut out 4 strips measuring 29x11.5 cm.

Let's start sewing strips of fabric together and with embroidery.

Place the first strip - the top long one - with the front side on front side embroidery, aligning their top and left edges. Please note that part of the stripe on the right remains NOT sewn.

Baste the strip of fabric to the embroidery at a distance of 1 cm from the edge.

Pay attention! When sewing the fabric to the embroidery, step back 1 cm from the right edge of the embroidery!

Then machine stitch, strictly observing the above boundaries. IRON the seam allowances and then IRON onto the fabric strip (not the embroidery).

Place the next strip of fabric vertically, place the right side on the front side of the resulting embroidered workpiece, aligning their top and left edges. Baste a strip of fabric 1cm from the edge, then machine stitch. Press the seam allowances open and then press onto the fabric strip.

Sew the third strip of fabric in the same way.

At this stage, the workpiece should look like this:

Sew the fourth strip - vertical - in the same way to the resulting workpiece.

Pay attention! When you fold the 4th strip right side up, the piece should look exactly like the photo below:

Press the seam allowances open and then press onto the fabric strip.

From the front side the pillowcase will look like this:

Place the remaining strips together, machine stitch, press and press the seams.

The front side of the pillowcase is ready!

To make the pillow softer and the pillowcase itself stronger, you can sew voluminous interlining or padding polyester to the front side.

I used padding polyester for sewing and patchwork Fairfield. Its thickness is about 3 mm. It is soft and light, obedient in work. Does not slip during stitching, does not lose shape after washing, fibers do not come out through the fabric. Does not stick together when ironed. It is considered a traditional padding polyester for quilting. I ordered from the online store “My Threads”.

According to the size of the resulting pillowcase, we cut out a part from padding polyester and a part of the lining.

To prevent layers of fabric and padding from moving relative to each other, pin them together with curved patchwork pins. You can use regular ones, but these are more convenient.

To hold all layers together, place decorative machine stitches along the long sides of the fabric at a distance of 1 cm from the embroidery. In addition to the functional load, machine stitching will give the pillowcase a finished look.

Start the line strictly from the beginning of one stripe, do not go to a stripe of a different color!

As a result, you will get such a beautiful, voluminous front side, all the layers of which are securely fastened together!

All that remains is to sew the back to the front of the pillowcase. There are several options here. I chose to finish the edge of the pillow with bias tape. I wanted to add a pop of color along the perimeter of the pillow, so I chose a brighter fabric for the bias tape.

The option of finishing the edge with bias tape is not the easiest. Here you need to know how to cut out bias tape correctly, and how to sew strips of fabric if the tape is not long enough. Plus, you need to sew a lot by hand (the trim is sewn on by hand with a blind stitch on one edge). I myself learned all the tricks of working with binding from lessons and master classes Tatiana Maksimenko(blog “Evening Gatherings”). If you want, you can also buy her guide to working with binding, you will need it many, many times!

If you don’t want to bother with the binding, then choose more simple options sewing pillowcases.

I will share with you links to Tatyana’s free master classes (I trust her unconditionally, each of her master classes is very detailed, understandable and thoughtful). You choose the most suitable method of sewing a pillowcase and finish your work)

In the end, I would only like to add that the process of sewing this pillowcase took me a lot of time, but only because at the same time I was busy with other things. If you don’t get distracted and sew purposefully, then it won’t take long at all!

And now my boys have two brand new pillows in their children’s room)

True, I did not do the final photo shoot at home. I took my beauties to a photo studio for a shoot) I wanted to show them in the most favorable light) How well it turned out is up to you to judge)

Currently, embroidery on pillows is becoming popular again, and therefore we want to tell you about how you can make wonderful embroidered sofa pillows with your own hands. As a rule, cross-stitching a pillow does not take much time for an experienced craftswoman, but for beginner needlewomen we would still recommend more simple circuits, with which they can easily and quickly decorate their home.

Cross stitch patterns or designs on a pillow

Our small master The class is designed primarily for beginner craftswomen, so we will not describe embroidery complex circuit, but let’s take an ordinary heart as an example and embroider such a cute image on a pillow. But, before you start work, we advise you to prepare everything you need. You will need:

  • checkered paper with a printed color image (in our case the design is monochromatic, so we black and white will do scheme);
  • pins;
  • pillow;
  • knitting threads the right colors(for the pattern we have chosen, only red ones are needed).

Let's get to work!
First, take the paper your diagram is printed on and carefully pin it to the pillow. In order for the embroidery of the pillow to be even and beautiful, you need to make sure that the sheet lies evenly and does not puff up anywhere. Once you are sure of this, you can get to work.

Usually, cross stitching pillows takes quite a lot of time, but since the image we have chosen is very simple, you will complete this task quite quickly.

When the embroidery of the pillow is finished, you will need to remove the now unnecessary paper. You can carefully trim the edges with scissors, but you will have to “clean” the middle by hand.

As a result, you should get such a wonderful cross-stitched pillow.

As you yourself have probably already noticed, embroidering pillows is not always a troublesome and painstaking task. Even the most regular drawing will help you decorate sofa cushions, which will subsequently “revive” your interior and bring fresh “notes” to it.

Original embroidery for sofa cushions

If you want your living room to be transformed, but at the same time you don’t have the time or money to renovate it, you can add a few bright accents that will “revive” this room. Great solution Embroidery of pillows can be a good idea because these small “accessories” not only serve to decorate the room, but also provide you with the proper level of comfort.
So, for work we need:

  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • hole punch;
  • scissors;
  • needle;
  • padding polyester;
  • yellow knitting threads;
  • a piece of black fabric (32.5 * 32.5 cm);
  • green fabric from which we will sew the pillow itself.

Let's start embroidering the pillow!
First you need to make markings on black fabric. In this case, you should get a neat grid consisting of squares, each side of which is 1 cm.

Then, stepping back 2 cm from each edge, you will need to make small holes at the intersection of all lines using a hole punch:

We will not need an embroidery pattern, since we will be embroidering 2 large english letters: "Hi." To make the embroidered pillows brighter and more unusual, we chose yellow threads that will go well with the black base.

After we finish working on the embroidery, we will need to attach the base to the green fabric and cut out 2 parts according to its size.
Then all we have to do is sew all three parts and fill the pad with padding polyester.

It is worth noting that embroidering pillows is a creative process, so you can safely experiment and create your own unique patterns and original inscriptions. Such cute embroidered pillows will undoubtedly attract the attention of your guests and make the interior of your room special and exclusive.

Sometimes they are used for bright accent against a background of dull shades, which creates a fun coloring for the room.

The cross stitch process is one of the oldest and simplest embroidery techniques. The procedure itself is simple, and includes only two stitches that cross each other. But compositions designed using this technique are real masterpieces that fit perfectly into the overall interior. The cross stitch technique does not require special pillows. preparatory work and materials. How to make a cross stitch pillow:

  • For the base, choose any fabric, only so that the interweaving of the cells is visible. The material you can use is calico, linen, tapestry fabric, cotton, or special canvas.
  • For work we prepare ready stuffed pillow, material for the bottom of the product and fabric for the top side of the fabric. We sew the pillowcase on three sides, then proceed to embroidery. But as practice shows, it is more convenient to design the embroidery first.
  • We purchase a kit for cross stitching a pillow. Basically, the set uses “stramine” fabric, which has a dense and rigid base with large weave stitches. The threads used for this type of canvas are very voluminous; they are also suitable for knitting. The crosses look very large, but look great on children's cheerful and colorful pillows.
  • To make the work look delicate and elegant, first of all, we embroider the picture on the pillow. Be sure to leave an allowance of 3-4 centimeters at the edge of the canvas so that the front side can subsequently be sewn to the back of the product. For this purpose we use any thread that is more suitable.

Important! It is not advisable to embroider with one thread, otherwise the picture will turn out very faded. They have proven themselves well when embroidering pillows. wool threads— in the process of work they are not at all capricious.

  • When the process of embroidering the pillowcase is completed, we cut out the front part of the canvas back side products.
  • For convenience, we sew a zipper on the side or in the middle, which allows you to carry out the washing process at any time.   • canvas or stramin fabric;
  • a special marker used for marking the outline;
  • ordinary scissors;
  • embroidery pattern;
  • needle;
  • magnifying glass if there is a small diagram.

  1. Thread the thread into a needle and fasten the thread to the canvas.
  2. Next, you need to separate one thread from the bundle, fold it in half so that both the loop and the tail are at the bottom, and thread the two ends that are connected into a needle.
  3. For the correct procedure for securing the thread to the canvas, we insert the thread from the wrong side to the front side, while the tail remains on the wrong side.
  4. We make a stitch obliquely, then again bring the thread to the wrong side, while picking up the loop with a needle and tightening it. We fasten the loop neither loosely nor tightly.
  5. We bring the needle “on the face” again, and we get the first cross. We make all other crosses using the same principle.

Features when working with outline and diagram

All patterns are divided into squares - pillowcase embroidery is no exception. Therefore, it is necessary to draw exactly the same squares on the canvas. With this marking it will be very easy and simple to embroider the pillow.

As a rule, they always start embroidering from the center of the canvas. To determine the center point, the canvas fabric needs to be folded in half, then in half again. At the point of intersection of the folding lines, we mark the center of the outline and begin to draw the squares we need. Now we begin the embroidery process in the same way as we embroider a picture or some other product.

How to sew a cross stitch pillow?

Many people are interested in embroidering a pillow, but not everyone has information about how it can then be sewn or not everyone has it sewing machine. You can sew a pillow without using sewing equipment, but you will have to spend more time and choose the right fabric.

For this process prepare:

  • embroidered front side of the pillow,
  • suitable material for the back,
  • interlining,
  • zipper with size 40-50 cm.

Important! If the embroidery design is made on hard stramine, and not on canvas fabric, then choose a dense material for the back side of the product, otherwise the fabric may crumble when adjacent to the stramine.

How to sew a cross stitch pillow with your own hands:

  • We pre-moisten the non-woven fabric and apply it to the wrong side of the embroidery. We glue it with an iron through chintz or cotton fabric. With this procedure, the threads and tails of the embroidery are protected from unwanted unraveling, the edges are protected from fraying, and the cushion is protected from showing through the holes of the canvas fabric.

Important! Non-woven fabric is ironed only for embroidery so that the edges remain free.

  • Trim off the excess non-woven fabric, leaving an allowance of 2-3 cm on each side.
  • From suitable fabric cut out the desired piece of the prepared size. The width should match the embroidered part, and the length should be cut 5-6 cm longer for sewing in a zipper.

Important! When sewing in a zipper, you need to choose threads of the corresponding shade of the crosses of the outermost row or a tone darker. In this case, the stitching on the stramine fabric is laid exactly between the boundaries of the crosses. With this method, the seam will not be noticeable.

  • You can also sew a zipper into the side seam of the product. If the zipper is sewn into the seam, then the edges of the front and back of the pillowcase are sewn, then the zipper is sewn in.
  • There is also the option of sewing a zipper into the back of the pillowcase. To do this, cut the back part in a straight line to the size of the zipper. After we have sewn the edges, we smooth about 2 cm onto the wrong side and baste the zipper so that the teeth are not visible.

Important! To baste a zipper, you must iron the seam allowance on the stramine fabric at the extreme point of the last cross.

  • Open the zipper slightly and sew down the pillowcase on all sides of the product. The line runs along the line of the outer cross.
  • We cut off the allowances, leaving about a centimeter, and also cut the corners in a diagonal direction. Leaving 2-3 centimeters, cut off the interlining.
  • We wrap the allowance onto the back side of the pillowcase and iron it. This way the edges don't fray.

Important! If the sewing process is carried out without interlining, then the edges need to be overcast.

  • Turn the pillowcase inside out. Using closed scissors or an unsharpened pencil, turn out the corners of the product.
  • Iron the edges of the product.
  • We insert the appropriate pillow size inside a sewn pillowcase with an embroidered image, fasten the zipper and use the product for its intended purpose.
  • If until now you doubted whether it was worth embroidering a pillow, now you are definitely convinced that this idea is very useful and interesting. With the help of such decorative items, you can definitely diversify the interior of any room, add your own unique flavor to it, and the embroidery process itself will definitely captivate you so much that it will be difficult for you to stop. New ideas and beautiful paintings will be created one after another, giving you a lot of pleasure!
