Yesterday we made a village out of colored cardboard. I was inspired by this idea:

Such toy villages in Europe are very fond of making for Christmas, placing them under the Christmas tree and decorating with lanterns.

I found a very interesting site http://littleglitterhouses.com/paul/howard_how_to.htm#crossbuck which has a huge amount of finished models which can be simply printed and cut out of paper.

My idea is that children can cut and glue simple models themselves. Together they look like a real village!

For the manufacture of houses, I bought several sheets of colored rough cardboard. Right on these sheets, I printed out the templates that I had drawn in advance on the printer.

I decided that it would be prettier if the walls of the house were the same color (I have white, orange and brown), and the roofs of a different color (black and red). Therefore, I connected the roofs in one template.

Separately, I made sets of windows and doors for houses No. 1,2,4. I printed them on red, orange and brown cardboard.

Tree patterns

In order to make 14 houses, I printed a template with house #1, #2 each on two sheets of cardboard (that's 8 houses), three large houses #3 on four sheets (4 more houses), and house #4 on two sheets (2 more houses). For them, I printed 4 sheets with roofs, one sheet with windows for house No. 3 and one sheet with sets of windows and doors for houses No. 1,2,4.

I printed the trees on thick cardboard Brown color. To make them stand, I made special stands from wine corks: I cut each in half, glued it to a small cardboard box, and cut a slit on top of the cork with a knife into which I inserted a tree.

Unfortunately, I did not have time to photograph in detail how the classes were held. I can note that everyone really liked the idea, but not all children could cut out exactly along the contour, I had to help. PVA glue did not fit this cardboard at all and after the first unsuccessful experiments they began to glue it with an ordinary glue stick. We got a little confused with the windows and doors, small details just got lost on the tables. In addition, not everyone had enough red roofs, so it’s best to have a supply of cardboard sheets of different colors with you in order to quickly cut something extra.

The lesson lasted about 40 minutes, this time was just enough for everyone to make one house with a little help from an adult. As always, the girls were happy to cut and paste something for the whole lesson, while the boys only had enough patience for 20 minutes :)

And already at the next lesson I plan to jointly make a prefabricated model Orthodox Church that will decorate this Christmas village.

Children's crafts not only delight the eye with brightness and beauty, the process of their creation is a special pleasure for the child, because it is so nice to give an original little thing to someone close! Practice shows that no matter how simple the printout template is, there is always a risk of ruining the craft. Little tricks will help you avoid incidents when creating a paper house:

• Not all children preschool age are able to cope with cutting out small details from thick paper - at best, the edge of the element will turn out to be uneven, at worst, you will have to re-print the template, and the child’s mood will be spoiled. Therefore, cut the workpiece yourself;
• Making out the fold lines, do not forget about the doors and shutters on the windows, they need to be bent in advance, before gluing. When the craft is fully assembled, it is difficult to bend these parts evenly, and even more so to carefully cut through;
• Using paper with a pattern (wallpaper) for the base, it is important to make sure that after gluing in all parts of the house, the pattern will be on the wrong side;
• The roof is always the last element in assembling a paper house; after gluing it, it is almost impossible to correct flaws;
• Sometimes when the glue dries, the edges of the paper diverge. One of two things is to blame: there was not enough glue or you need to better press the details of the template. For better fixation, connect the elements with paper clips and leave them until the adhesive is completely dry.

6. Carefully lay the front wall with a cutout on top of the prepared fasteners and press lightly.

8. We fix the walls of the house from above and below with the help of prepared parts.

9. The walls are fixed to each other, we glue the base of the house.

10. We glue the outer joints masking tape so that in the future the structure does not have cracks and folds.

11. We proceed to the manufacture of the roof. To do this, we use the scheme number 2.

12. We draw the cardboard, according to scheme No. 2. Cut out the elements of the scheme.

13. In order for the roof slopes to be fixed together, it is necessary to glue the strip in the form of a three-dimensional triangle.

14. Close the voids with small triangles.

15. We fix the roof slopes.

16. On both sides we glue the gables.

17. The body of the house is assembled. Let's start priming. For this white acrylic paint paint over the inside of the base of the house and the roof.
