  • at night, the canopy provides protection to owners from annoying insects such as mosquitoes and flies;

Photo 3. To make the bedroom seem lighter and airier, you need to decorate it in soft pastel colors.

If, for example, the bedroom is spacious and has high ceilings, then it would be better to build a dome-shaped canopy. When the bed is in the very center of the room, you need to install classic canopy, it has the shape of a rectangular frame, on four sides of which curtains are hung. For beds located in small bedrooms, it is recommended to give preference to a semicircular dome - a canopy.

Choose suitable fabric for a curtain it is necessary depending on what functions the canopy should perform. If it is planned to be used to organize a more comfortable sleep and divides the room into work and rest areas, then preference should be given to heavy fabrics such as cambric and muslin. When the dome is assigned an exclusively aesthetic role, you can buy beautiful and expensive fabrics that perform a decorative function:

  • tapestry;
  • velvet;
  • light and transparent veil;
  • organza shimmering in the sunlight;
  • nylon tulle, etc.

Choose fabric not only by texture, but also by its color and pattern. Remember that the canopy should be in harmony with the rest of the furniture and accessories in the room and complement the chosen style.

How to make a canopy in a classic style

Photo 4. To make a canopy in a classic style, you need to make a rectangular frame and sew 8 curtains.

In order to build a classic bed canopy with your own hands, you need to purchase fabric that will be used to sew curtains. For them you will need a couple of 2-meter pieces of silk or tulle. 2 curtains are sewn from them, which should be attached to the cornice rings (photo No. 2).

The complete list of materials and tools is as follows:

  • wooden beam measuring 2x2, height 22 cm, 4 pieces;
  • 2 cornices, whose length is equal to the width of the bed, and 2 more cornices, equal to the length of the bed;
  • fastening elements - bolts;
  • electric drill;
  • roulette;
  • building level;
  • fabric for curtains or curtains;
  • decorative tape to support curtains;
  • sewing tools - chalk, scissors, threads, needles, sewing machine.

The frame for a classic canopy should be made of smooth or decorated bars installed at the corners of the bed strictly perpendicular to it. Previously this lumber you need to coat it with an antiseptic, which will make the structure stronger and more durable. The bars will need to be secured to the bed frame using bolts. These racks are tied on top with cornices, which, if desired, can be replaced with thin horizontal beams; in this case, you will have to buy rings for them on which the fabric will be attached. This structure will need to be covered suitable paint, and then, at the request of the owners, with varnish.

After creation rectangular frame you can start sewing curtains in the amount of 8 pieces, since you will need to hang 2 curtains on each side (photo No. 4). The width of the fabric should be equal to the distance between the floor and the cornices, 2-3 cm should be added, thanks to which it will be possible to make a hem.

The curtains may not reach the floor, but only cover the mattress, falling 15-20 cm below it. Having cut out the curtains, they will need to be folded on all sides, stitched sewing machine, then sew a braid with loops along the top edge, using which the curtains will be hung on the rings of the cornice.

Gather the hanging curtains near the supports, lifting them by 1/3 and tie them with decorative ribbons attached to the posts. Some people prefer not to pull the curtains, leaving them open (photo No. 5), which makes the sleeping area lighter and airier, especially if it is decorated in soft pastel colors (photo No. 3).

How to make a dome-type canopy?

Photo 6. The basis for the ring-shaped canopy is a metal circle with a diameter of 50 cm.

Making a luxurious domed canopy with a ring shape requires the following materials and tools:

  • metal circle;
  • 4 chains 40-50 cm long;
  • hook for fastening;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • wire;
  • hacksaw;
  • electric welding;
  • electric drill;
  • cornice rings.

The ring-shaped canopy is an example of the most striking and amazing works of design art (photo No. 6). The basis for it will be a small metal circle with a diameter of 50 cm. In one place this circle will have to be sawed in order to string cornice rings onto it. This ring can then be reconnected into a closed structure by welding. Drill holes on four opposite sides of the circle through which pass 40 or 50 cm of chain, connecting them together, hang them on a hook pre-attached with self-tapping screws to the ceiling above the center of the bed.

The production of curtains is carried out using the tools and technologies presented in the above classic version. However, for a dome it is better to choose transparent fabrics, such as nylon, organza or voile. To create curtains, you will need 2 or more pieces of fabric, the length of which must be at least 2 m, and the width is calculated based on how many curtains you plan to hang on the ring. Since the fabric will not be attached to the 4 posts located on each side of the bed, and the curtains will hang freely in light folds and waves and spread around the perimeter of the bed, you should not skimp on the size of the fabric, since the cut pieces will not look very elegant. When creating this type of canopy, some designers do not advise equipping the metal circle with cornice rings, since long pieces of fabric can simply be thrown over the circle and tied in beautiful knots. For small rooms A semicircular canopy is suitable.

The curtain over the bed is called a canopy, which is a piece of light fabric attached to the bed posts or hung on a cornice. The use of canopies goes back centuries, which is why it is associated with royal chambers. However, this detail has safely survived to this day. In the bedroom, where there is a bed with a weightless canopy, a gentle, calm and romantic atmosphere reigns.

A bed curtain serves to protect the sleeper from drafts, insects, light, prying eyes (for example, if the bed is located in the living room or studio apartment), and also gives a feeling of comfort and security. A bed with a curtain allows you to organize a personal space where you can take a nap, relax or read a book in privacy.

It is also appropriate to hang this element above a bed in a child’s room – it will give the child comfort and pleasant dreams. Light tulle suspended from the bed visually softens the strict geometric shapes of cabinet furniture.

The canopy is also additional element interior decor of the room, especially if it is decorated in a classic or historical style. The curtain for the bed is sold separately in specialized stores; it is also possible to buy a ready-made bed with it.

The main advantages of a curtain over the bed:

  1. Interior design addition. The canopy is a truly beautiful textile product, and the unique way of attaching it (light throws, cascades, frills, drapery, tiebacks) different lengths) will give the room a unique style.
  2. The optimal solution for a studio apartment. The use of a fabric curtain is appropriate in an apartment where there is no clear division of space.
  3. Rational filling of space. In uncomfortable spacious bedrooms with high ceilings, it is advisable to install a bed with a draped canopy, since it can visually make the room smaller, filling it with coziness.
  4. Protection from sunlight. If the windows face East and bright lights hit your eyes in the morning sun rays, the curtain will reliably protect the sleeper from them.

To maintain the presentable appearance of this product, it is necessary to regularly clean up the room, otherwise the canopy bed will lose its attractiveness against the backdrop of disorder.

Disadvantages of curtains over the bed:

  1. Regular cleaning is required. Since dust accumulates in the folds of the fabric, it is necessary to wash the curtain once every 1-2 months, especially if there are allergy sufferers and small children in the house.
  2. Not suitable for small bedrooms low ceilings. IN small room a sleeping place with a curtain creates a feeling of clutter.
  3. The combination with other interior items is important. The canopy should be harmoniously combined with carpeted, bed, blanket and pillows. It is often difficult to achieve such a result on your own, so you may need the help of designers.

A canopy made of thick fabric can be cleaned of dust using a vacuum cleaner, setting the gentle suction mode.

Types of canopies

There are following methods Attaching curtains over the bed:

  1. Frame (classic). The fabric sheet is attached to high metal or wooden posts. This design is strong and reliable, so it can withstand curtains made of heavy fabrics in several layers (jacquard, velvet). The frame can also be fixed above the ceiling, in the absence of bed posts.
  2. "Crown" ("dome"). The axis of the dome-shaped structure runs through the center of the sleeping bed. When choosing this type of fastening, you should use light fabrics (tulle, veil, silk).
  3. Frame. The fabric is suspended from a metal arc, which is attached to the wall above the headboard. The installation of such a frame is simple, versatile and affordable.
  4. With crossbar. This design consists of two pipes: one is attached to the wall, and the second directly to the fabric and suspended from the ceiling on special loops.
  5. With massive vertical posts. Beds are available for sale, equipped with four durable wooden stands, intended for fastening the canopy.
  6. If the sleeping place is located in the corner of the room, then it is better to use a canopy frame in the shape of an arc.

    Material selection

    The curtain covering the bed can be made of any material, but its type affects appearance interior For the bedroom it is better to use light fabric (tulle, natural silk, chiffon, organza, veil). These fabrics provide good air circulation and also decorate the interior, bringing lightness and serenity to it. Heavy fabrics (jacquard, tapestry, velvet), placed above the bed, can emphasize the status and refined taste of the owner. IN winter time A curtain made of thick material will ensure that the sleeping area retains heat. It is important to attach such curtains to strong supports; a frame with vertical massive posts is ideal.

    Heavy fabrics fit well into the interior of a room decorated in a classical style, and light ones - in an oriental one.

    Regardless of the type of material, the canopy should be in harmony with other interior elements, especially curtains. When placing it, it is important to consider the ceiling height, type, design, layout and size of the room. Various options will allow you to emphasize the uniqueness of the bedroom style. decorative elements(tassels, fringe, flounces).

    A curtain blocking a bed has a decorative function to a greater extent, so it is usually used as a room decoration. Canopies are used not only to decorate a sleeping bed, but also for summer verandas, gazebos, and banquet halls. It’s not difficult to sew it yourself if you have some sewing skills, but it’s easier to buy finished product in a specialty store.

A canopy over the bed is an elegant addition to the design of the bed, becoming an elegant part of the entire bedroom interior. The canopy of the classic type is a canvas of fabric mounted on four pillar columns. They create a kind of “walls” and “ceiling” for the bed. But these days, canopy designs are much more varied. They can be rectangular and round, cantilever and ceiling, full and partial, dense and airy.

Need examples for inspiration? This collection of photographs will introduce you to original ideas designers creating canopies for beds.

Canopies are an invention of those times when there were drafts in houses and castles, and in winter you had to take hot water bottles with you to bed. The beds were made wide not so much for comfort, but so that several people could lie down in them at once. For example, sometimes the maids could lie with the mistress. There are several children with their parents. And all in order to warm up in that cozy space, which was fenced off from the cold by a canopy of thick fabric. It was closed tightly, and the bed turned into a small isolated room.

But now, of course, there is no point for us to “warm ourselves” like that. Canopies over beds these days serve primarily a decorative function, so they are most often made from light and airy fabrics. Such a canopy over the bed creates an atmosphere of exquisite romance, and sometimes even evokes erotic fantasies.

However, curtains over the bed often perform another function - psychological. Under the canopy, a person feels more protected, comfortable, and cozy. It creates a feeling of security.

Dense fabrics to create a canopy over the bed are used in styles where there is traditionally an element of luxury, and sometimes grandiosity: for example, in art deco, palace, baroque.

Modern designers have developed many designs to support the canopy over the bed:

  • The classic canopy is mounted on a rectangular frame mounted on columns. It turns out to be a bed with curtains and a top sheet. Curtains are rarely drawn completely these days; they are usually assembled using tiebacks. As a rule, this option is found in beds that were originally designed as a canopy bed.

  • A canopy resembling a dome or crown. It is attached both above the center of the bed and above the headboard. This is a more petite option, but can be quite luxurious. The frame can be either square or round (resembling a large embroidery hoop). The fabric falls in radiating waves.

  • Sometimes the canopy is just a curtain in the headboard area. But this seemingly minimalistic option can actually also be as luxurious as you like.

  • A canopy that is only the top sheet. Stylish modern version. Sometimes it can even be futuristic.

  • Curtain over the bed attached to high back or wall. Not so much a canopy as just a beautiful accessory.

  • One of the most simple options- arc frame attached to the wall. It is convenient if the bed is in the corner of the room.

The choice of color for the canopy is dictated by the overall palette of the room. However, there are several basic principles for choosing colors. Since a canopy bed is already quite a significant piece of furniture, rich colors - red, blue, burgundy, malachite, gold - will add additional luxury to the interior, but can make the situation heavier. Black canopies are found in art deco interiors. Golden-honey - in palace-classical, baroque.

If you want to maintain a feeling of lightness, choose bed curtains in pastel and muted shades. Brown is considered heavy, but, oddly enough, canopies in chocolate and coffee shades look soft and cozy. White and silver bed curtains can fit into any interior - the impression will depend on the choice of fabric.

A canopy over the bed symbolizes romanticism and comfort, and also gives a delightful feeling of security. Such textile decoration will take its rightful place in the interior of a spacious bedroom, give you the most tender dreams and soften the geometric shapes of the furniture.

It is not at all necessary that a canopy should gravitate toward historical themes of baroque or classicism. Its main purpose is to highlight the bed, but not to the detriment of the rest of the decoration. And to prevent this from happening, all draperies in the room, including window ones, are made in a similar color scheme.

Basic forms and designs of canopies

Light drapes of fabric or heavy velvet curtains are all canopies. The variety of versions is amazing. But three main directions can still be distinguished:

  • fabric on the supports, helping to highlight the contour of the bed and emphasizing the space above it;
  • suspended structures (including on consoles), where the main decorative role allocated to the canopy;
  • any textile compositions of any design, only “drawing” the desired spatial image.

Basic forms of canopies

If we talk about specific designs that are popular, we can note:

Nuances of choosing matter

But the purpose of fabric draperies here is not practical and functional, but purely decorative. The purpose of a canopy is to create a romantic atmosphere, and only certain fabrics can do this.

However, heavy materials are also popular - for example, tapestry, jacquard and velvet. They are most in demand in classic “palace” styles, as they symbolize wealth and luxury. If velvet is a classic, then satin and silk are delightfully combined with carved gilded baroque furniture.

Canopy in a modern bedroom

And for a high-tech bedroom, there may be no fabric on the frame at all - just some hints of curtains. And this is in contrast to complex oriental draperies, where airy light fabrics are wrapped around the bed many times, creating multi-level mysterious canopies of the chambers of the Shamakhan queen.

canopy in oriental style also necessarily complemented by flounces and tassels - these are his most recognizable decorations.

Please note. The style of the bedroom and the style of the canopy should go together perfectly. Desired effect is provided not only by the texture of the fabric, but also by its color and pattern. Remember that the pattern and shades of the material for the canopy must be duplicated in other textiles - capes, etc.

Use colorful and bright fabrics to create the atmosphere of an Indian harem. And in contrast to them - European restraint and elegant silk draperies in dark colors. White will immediately remind you of a sunny, warm Mediterranean beach, and small flowers on the fabric will create a positive spring mood.

To create an atmosphere of restraint, use fabrics of cool colors, and for romanticism and sensuality - impressive scarlet, delicate powdery or marshmallow pink, as well as deep precious shades of gold.
