Do-it-yourself pillow-cushion under the neck: master class with photo diagrams. DIY sofa cushion cushion Cylindrical shape pillow

Each house has its own unique interior, each has its own little details and nuances that make it so. An entrance mat, embroidered napkins, a non-standard panel - a popular “hand-made” product that is slowly filling our homes. Handicrafts usually require specially prepared materials; they are not always right at hand. But if you decide that you should have a bolster pillow with your own hands, then maybe you already have everything you need for this.

Many people have problems sleeping. And the solution to this problem can be making your own orthopedic pillow-cushion. In Eastern countries, bolster-shaped pillows are very common. This can be argued by the love, for example, of the Japanese, to sleep on something hard; it could be either a specialized mattress or just a solid base, and for convenience a cushion was placed under the head. Of course, not every person is ready to radically change their sleep habits and switch from a regular soft mattress to a hard one, but using a bolster while sleeping and resting under the neck will definitely be beneficial.

Everyone has heard at least once in their life that sleeping on soft, loose pillows is not at all good for health. This affects both the neck and back. Of course, the negative consequences will not catch you immediately, but over time they will begin to appear. According to recent research by scientists, it has been recognized that the optimal object used for sleeping under the head is a cylindrical cushion.

Types of rollers

Cushion cushions can be completely different; to understand which one you want to make for yourself, you should familiarize yourself with their varieties.

There are bolsters that can be used on the bed specifically for relaxation and sleep. They can be placed under the neck, under the head, under the arms, legs, and in general under any part of the body; they are almost universal in their purpose.

These pillows have a great look, they will suit any interior, and depending on the chosen appearance, any style.

But besides pillows intended for the body, there are pillows simply for decoration. They can simply decorate your sofa in the living room or serve as a bumper on the bed in the children's room.

The most the best filler For the roller, buckwheat husk is considered. This is an environmentally friendly product, and it is in Japan that this filler is most popular. If you notice, store-bought orthopedic pillows are also filled with processed buckwheat. Using such a pillow will ensure a slight deformation of the shape when placed under parts of the body, but not loss of it, and thereby increase comfort.

Pros of use

Cushion pillows have become so popular precisely because of the advantages that are observed when using them. Even pregnant women use such pillows for a comfortable position on the bed, although, as can be seen in the photo above, they require a slightly larger size than the standard one.

After spending at least one night on such a pillow, you will immediately notice relaxation and good health, which will follow you all day. The spine will not receive such a load, since it will not bend incorrectly, that is, the body will be in a more even position.

Cervical osteochondrosis will reduce its impact on your life as soon as you begin to systematically sleep with the right pillow.

Such rollers are sewn, crocheted and made in various techniques. You don’t need a pattern for sewing; it’s very easy to figure out how to make your own bolster pillow without one.

Simple option

To make a bolster pillow you will need:

  1. Fabric (there are no restrictions on the choice of fabric, but you should pay attention to natural materials so that contact with the skin does not cause unpleasant sensations, as well as irritation and allergies). The fabric size is calculated independently, depending on the size of the roller. In the master class, the size used is 20 cm in diameter, length is 61 cm;
  2. Zipper (to change the filling or for washing it is convenient to be able to remove the pillowcase of the roller);
  3. Threads, needle, scissors, centimeter;
  4. Ribbon with pompoms for decoration.

The first step will be cutting, according to the dimensions indicated above, without using any diagrams, the details are cut out: side circles. Allow a seam allowance of 2 cm.

The finished pillowcase is stuffed with the filling of your choice: natural fillers, padding polyester, etc.

A good piece of advice would be to take the time to sew a separate pillowcase for the filling, following the same principle. Only for the pillowcase you don’t need to sew in a separate zipper, just stuff it and carefully sew up the hole through which it was stuffed with a hidden seam.

Many of us suffer from various sleep disorders. One of the ways that helps to successfully counter this state of affairs is to make an orthopedic pillow-cushion with your own hands.

By the way, very common this type pillows are in the culture of the country Rising Sun. As many probably know, the Japanese love to sleep on a hard surface, which is a special mattress, placing a very hard pillow under their head, shaped like an elongated cylinder. Of course, not all of our compatriots are ready to make such radical changes and become like the descendants of the samurai. But, at the same time, starting to sleep on a slightly firmer mattress and using a bolster pillow under your neck is quite realistic, and, most importantly, good for your health.

Surely most of us have heard that sleeping on traditional and familiar large pillows, and even soft ones, is quite harmful for both the neck and back. And if you don't immediately feel any negative consequences, this does not mean at all that they will not appear over time. At the same time, pillows that have an elongated cylindrical configuration are quite suitable for every person and are very useful for sleeping.

By placing them under your neck, they allow your spine to remain in an elongated position throughout your sleep. In other words, they have a considerable number of advantages, which, in turn, explain their growing popularity.

Varieties

Pillows in the form (of a bolster) under the head can have different configurations. Let's look at each of the options in some detail.

For bed

Cushion pillows that are used for beds can be either decorative or used for their intended purpose, that is, for sleeping. They are very versatile as you can place them under almost any part of the body:

  • Under your arm.
  • Under the back.
  • For the neck.
  • Under the head.
  • Under your feet.

In addition, they have excellent appearance, thanks to which such pillows can fit into the interior of any bedroom, which may belong to one style or another.

Decorative pillows

A long pillow is a great option

They can be used not only in the bedroom, but also in the living room, children's room, and in any other room in which. A decorative pillow-cushion can have different configurations: from a straight cylinder to a so-called “bone”, narrow in the middle and diverging at the edges.

By the way! Pillows made from buckwheat husks are considered optimal for orthopedic purposes. Buckwheat allows you to better retain its shape.

In addition, buckwheat is a 100% environmentally friendly raw material. By the way, since we are talking about Japan, it should be noted that it is there that buckwheat pillows are a mass phenomenon. It’s not for nothing that many orthopedic buckwheat pillows, which are sold even in Russia and other CIS countries, are called “makura”, which translates from Japanese language, like a "pillow". It is the countries of the East, by the way, that are the “homeland” of bolster pillows, which over time migrated to us from there, becoming popular.

Their use involves not only placing them under your head or back, but also as a footrest and even an armrest. In other words, the scope of their application is limited solely by your imagination.

Key Benefits

Well, now let’s touch on the main advantages of bolster pillows, because it’s not for nothing that they became so widespread, attracting the attention of many buyers and craftsmen who make them with their own hands at home. First of all, I would like to remind you that real relaxation and good sleep a person is capable only if his spine is provided with complete relaxation. To do this, several conditions must be met at once, including the fact that the neck and head are on the floor. In this way, it is possible to ensure an even position of the spine, since all kinds of bends are excluded: your spine simply does not bend or bend, but is in a more or less even position.

All this can be provided by high-quality pillows that have a special configuration. So, if you are experiencing certain problems with sleep, and also feel tired in your neck, back or lower back, many experienced specialists give one piece of advice: reconsider your attitude towards the conditions in which you sleep, on what mattresses and what pillows you use. .

By the way! Such products prove to be very useful in cervical osteochondrosis, as well as for other similar health problems.

In this regard, a sofa bolster cushion is a fairly “advanced” product, as they say. If you suffer from pain in problem areas associated with the spine, you should pay attention to this product. The fact is that a bolster pillow for a sofa can provide your body with an optimal position during sleep, and this, as you know, is the key to not only relaxation, but also the absence of problems in some places: the back, neck and lower back.

Master class on making

As we can see, the most common are 2 large groups of similar pillows: classic, intended primarily for sleeping, as well as decorative ones for the sofa, which can be quite large or long, or small. If you are interested in how to sew a bolster pillow with your own hands, want to know how the pattern is made, and also find out for yourself many other interesting points, we recommend studying a short master class that describes how to make this product yourself at home.

There are several options for how to make a bolster pillow with your own hands. They are all slightly different from each other, but initial stage you will need to prepare approximately the same materials and tools. Here is their list:

What do you need What is it used for?
Accessories Buttons or zipper for closing the filling or for the cover
Sewing kit Needles, scissors, etc., with which you will sew
Textile Useful for filling and for covers, as well as pillowcases (you can use a ready-made one)
Filler Buckwheat, foam rubber, holofiber and so on, depending on what degree of rigidity and durability you want to get in the end
Compass Needed when sewing a pillow in the form of a cylinder
Various decorative accessories In case you want to further decorate the case

We will not describe separately the process of sewing pillows different shapes, (round, cylindrical, classic rectangular, square, and so on), since the process itself is essentially no different. The only difference is in the shape of the pattern.

Remember! Foam pillows are softer, but at the same time much less “healthy” in terms of comfort and usefulness for the neck and lower back.

In fact, if we are talking about a pillow with orthopedic properties, it is advisable to choose a more or less rigid material for the filler, with which you could make a pillow with the so-called memory effect. This means that such a product will take the shape of your neck, head or lower back and remain in this position for a long time, as if remembering the outlines of your body. Foam rubber in this regard is not the optimal filler, although it is quite cheap.

So, in short, the sequence of actions when sewing a pillow with your own hands is as follows:

  • After preparing the materials and tools mentioned above, you need to make a pattern for the mound. Filling, if anyone doesn’t know, is the same fabric “bag”, which is then filled with artificial or natural filler.
  • Then you need to cut out the blanks and sew them using sewing machine or an ordinary needle. The second, of course, takes longer, but the seam is quite durable.
  • If the filler is bulk, then you can sew in a zipper, which, by the way, is a very convenient thing. If we explain it using buckwheat husks as an example, we can say that if such a pillow uses a zipper, you can periodically (once a year or six months) unzip the zipper, pour out the filling, dry it, and then refill it. When such a filler is completely “wear and tear” (remember that it absorbs hair oil, sweat, and, as some experts believe, negative energy), you can simply shake it out, fill in a new one and continue to use the updated pillow.
  • Be that as it may, let’s mix the filler inside the filling. Sew it tightly or use a zipper, as discussed in the previous paragraph. As numerous reviews indicate, it is better, after all, to use a combination with zipper and bulk filler.
  • Let's make a cover. In terms of its production technology, it is no different from sewing filling. To make it easier, you can use ready-made patterns for making covers.
  • Actually, the pillow is ready. All you have to do is put on a pillowcase, if provided, or, if you wish, decorate the cover. To do this, you can make decorative crochet weaving, do embroidery, sew on figured patches (patchwork technique), and so on.

As promised, I’m returning to the “pillow” topic with master classes that I prepared for a special issue of the magazine “I cross stitch. My home." There are a great many ways to sew a pillow, I tried to highlight the six simplest, in my opinion, solutions. You are already familiar with two of them (a pillow with buttons and a pillow with ties), so I will only show four here. A lot of people have asked me about sewing in a zipper, so let's start with a pillow with a zipper.

Zipper pillow

There are several options for sewing in a zipper, we will look at one of them. The zipper is sewn on back side pillows.

Cutting Features:

For the backdrop, cut out two pieces, the width of which is equal to the part for the front side of the pillow, and the total height is equal to the height of the part for the front side of the pillow plus about 2 cm.

Place the backdrop pieces with right sides facing each other and pin together. Place marks, noting the location of the lightning. Stitch the parts as follows: sew to the first mark with a regular stitch, tack, change the stitch length to maximum (5mm) and stitch to the second mark, change the stitch length to normal and, having completed the tack, sew further with a regular stitch. The resulting stitch should look like this: regular stitch - bartack - basting stitch - bartack - regular stitch:

Press seam allowance. On the wrong side, place a zipper along the seam, pin and baste (by machine or by hand):

Remove the pins. Sew a zipper on the front side using a special foot for sewing machine, intended for sewing in zippers:

Open the basting line. fold the backdrop with front side pillowcases with right sides facing each other, pin along the perimeter and stitch from the wrong side. Cut the corners diagonally and overcast the seam allowances with a zig-zag seam.

Pillowcase with a “pocket” - ideal for beginners

This is the simplest pillowcase; it is sewn very simply and quickly from a single piece of fabric with a minimum number of seams.

Cutting Features:

Cut out a rectangle, the width of which is equal to the width of the pillow plus two centimeters for seam allowances (1cm on each side), and the length is equal to twice the height of the pillow plus about 15cm for the inner flap (“pocket”) plus about 6cm for hems of two sections (3cm each). for each cut).

Hem both short edges. To do this, turn the fabric on the wrong side at a distance of 1 cm. Iron. Fold again by 2cm, iron and stitch:

Place the rectangle right side up. On the left side, fold the fabric up at a distance equal to the height of the pillow. Then, on the right side, fold up the remaining fabric equal to the size of the “pocket”. Pin the pieces together along the side edges:

Sew the pillowcase on both sides. Cut the corners diagonally and overcast the seam allowances with a zig-zag seam:

Round pillow - ideal for beginners

A very simple pillow, fastened with a cord, sewn according to the “yo-yo” principle.

Cutting Features:

Cut out a circle with a diameter approximately twice as large as the future pillow and along an oblique (i.e., at an angle of 45 degrees to the grain thread) a strip of fabric 5-7 cm wide, with a length equal to the circumference of the round part.

Stitch the strip into a ring and pin along the entire length of the circumference, right side to right side. Sew in a circle, trim the seam allowance with zig-zag scissors:

Fold the untreated edge of the strip to the wrong side at a distance of about 1 cm and iron it. Fold the strip in half and stitch to the wrong side of the circle, leaving a small hole for threading the cord:

Insert a lace or ribbon into the drawstring, tighten it and tie it with a bow.

Pillow - cushion

A cushion cushion can be made very simply by sewing a long “tube” and tying both ends with ribbons, like a candy. A more complex option is a roller with a zipper and round bases, the sewing of which requires some skill.

Cutting Features:

Sew a zipper into the main piece as shown above for the zipper cushion. On both sides, pin the base to the resulting cylinder ( round parts), folding the parts right sides together and making sure the fabric is evenly distributed:

Sew in circles. Trim the seam allowances with zig-zag scissors close to the stitching so that in the future the seams will lie well and not puff up:

Perhaps we all need to learn the Japanese's instructions for great sleep. They sleep on their backs, on a hard specialized mattress, and place a log in a pillowcase under their heads. According to their point of view, only this position of the body during sleep gives relaxation and good rest the whole body. Our mentality is completely different from the eastern vision of the world, but no one bothers to adopt a little of their rest options: you can sleep on a more hard bed, and instead of a whole beam, you can use a bolster pillow.

It has long been proven that napping on very large and large pillows is harmful. Rollers, on the contrary, are one hundred percent suitable for this purpose. They are low, quite rigid and are placed under the neck, therefore allowing the spine to remain in an even position.

What types of bolster pillows can there be?

Before we start listing all the advantages of such pillows, let’s see what types of bolsters are available:

a bolster pillow for the bed, which is used both for sleeping and for decoration;

sofa decorative cushions for the back;

Decorative rollers can be used for an armrest and also for a footrest.

Cushions- rollers are excellent for several reasons: Firstly, they are convenient for placing them under the head, under the back, under the arm, under the legs, and secondly, they fit perfectly into any design, will become a bright accent in the room and perfectly combine with square decorative pillows on one sofa.

In size, a decorative cushion-cushion can be straight, accurately repeating the shape of a cylinder, or it can have a gathered edge; in this version of the assembly, it is crowned with either a beautiful button, or a “tail” made of fabric, or a decorative brush, as in the version with a roller made style - East. By the way, bolster pillows actually came to us from the East, which is why made from “oriental” fabrics, for example, multi-color taffeta and decorated with tassels, such pillows look simply beautiful and are considered an invariable accessory of oriental interiors.

Now, by the way, let’s move on to describing the advantages of bolster pillows. Why are they so pleasant that they are not at all inferior to classic rectangular pillows, and sometimes even exceed them?

Pros of bolster pillows

First, let's remember the structure human body and the fact that a person receives simple rest only when his spine is relaxed. What does this require? It’s absolutely not enough: so that at the time of sleep both the neck and the head lie on the pillow.

Only when the back is fixed at one point and the deflections are removed does the spine give itself the opportunity to rest. Therefore, the back and neck relax, nervous tension goes away and pain in the spine and back is relieved. Those who suffer from back pain need to completely reconsider their attitude towards sleep, look at what pillows you sleep on, are they comfortable, are they high or, on the contrary, are they low?

The bolster pillow for sleeping has a number of therapeutic effects. A lot depends on the correct position of the body during sleep. For example, as we said above, headaches and pain in the spine go away, blood circulation and heart function improve, blood pressure improves, the eyes relax and intraocular pressure decreases.

The bolster pillow is also recommended for sleep by those who sleep restlessly at night and suffer from chronic fatigue.

By the way, such pillows are classified as orthopedic, in particular if they are filled not with feathers and traditional down, but, for example, with hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly buckwheat husk, which, moreover, has a massage effect. And in addition, orthopedic cushions for relaxation and sleep are filled with healing herbs in order to complement the therapeutic results of aromatherapy. Among the most common aromatic fillers, juniper, lavender, and cedar should be noted. such rollers not only contribute sleep soundly, but also relieve stress, relax the nervous system, and relieve insomnia.

Characteristics of making decorative pillows-rollers with your own hands

For needlewomen, it will be interesting that a pillow-cushion is quite easy to make at home. Moreover, it is very easy to sew to such an extent that even a novice seamstress can get involved in making a roller. The patchwork style cushion looks beautiful when the decorative pillowcase is made from multi-colored scraps of fabric. Also on the cushion-cushion there will be suitable lace and hand embroidery. Decorative pillowcases are usually made with an unfastening zipper - this is done for the comfort of using a roller, so that if required, the pillowcase can be very easily removed and washed. And such a pillow can be filled with feathers and traditional down, or synthetic materials, for example, foam rubber or holofiber.

DIY decorative pillow cushion

As you can see, the cylindrical shape of the pillow has a very beneficial effect on general condition body. So, if, for example, you are unwell, then buy at least one roller and try it in action. Who knows, perhaps the bolster pillow itself will give you the opportunity to completely rest and taste life without pain in the cervical region and back. Well, decorative varieties of such pillows will become good decision in decorating your home.

Find absolutely healthy person difficult these days. One regularly has back pain, another has a headache, a third suffers from insomnia, and a fourth has deteriorating vision. Of course, these symptoms can indicate a variety of diseases, but often to get rid of them it is enough to purchase the right bedding. One of the most convenient accessories for sleeping - a cushion pillow. How to choose this accessory and is it possible to sew it yourself?

Why is a bolster pillow better than a classic one?

Quality rest during night sleep is very important for the human body. This is a time for rest of all organs and systems of our body. How often do you manage to wake up in the morning completely restored and invigorated? If this is very rare, it makes sense to think about purchasing orthopedic bedding. One of modern solutions for a comfortable sleep - a bolster pillow. This is a cylindrical product with an elastic or fairly rigid filler. A classic pillow involves placing the entire head of the sleeper on its surface. The cushion is placed under the neck of a lying person and allows the spine to take the correct position. For greater comfort, you can use two such pillows, placing one of them under the lower back.

and application today

It is believed that cylindrical sleep accessories were originally invented in Ancient China and Japan. A popular version of their creation is that women originally slept on such products, dressing in national fashion and wearing beautiful hairstyles with backcombing and lots of jewelry for more than one day. Accordingly, the cushion cushion made it possible not to spoil the styling during sleep. In addition, proper support helped maintain a healthy and beautiful neck even with regular heavy loads in the form of the weight of voluminous hairstyles. Today, rollers are used not only for sleeping, but also for decoration. Such pillows are very popular for decorating sofas and armchairs in living rooms and other recreation rooms.

How to sew it yourself: a simple diagram

It’s not at all difficult to make such a pillow yourself, even without having any special skills. All you need is a sufficiently sized rectangle of fabric and two decorative decorations. These can be tassels or large beads. For ease of use, you should separately sew the lower cover for the filling of the product and the outer cover, providing it with fasteners. Simple scheme Making this accessory involves sewing a rectangle along the long side, leaving allowances on the sides. Attention: it is also more convenient to make the fastener with a zipper or buttons along the length of the product. Once you have completed this task, you can move on to assembling the side parts. Work around the edge of the fabric and gently pull the ends towards the center. This should result in neat assemblies. That's all, you have a bolster pillow. With your own hands you were able to make a useful accessory for sleeping and original item decor. All that remains is to place the selected filler in the lower case and put the upper one on it. You can sew decorative tassels or other decorations on the sides of the pillowcase.

Do-it-yourself bolster pillow: sew a version with sides

A more complex pattern for a cylindrical sleep accessory involves cutting two additional elements. In addition to the large rectangle, cut out two circles of suitable size. These will be the side parts. Sew the pillow according to the previous instructions. First, connect the long sides of the rectangle to each other, and then sew the circles into the holes on the sides. Such a cushion cushion can be made of fabric that replicates other textiles in the room, such as curtains or a bedspread. Original version decor - sew the long part of the accessory from several separate strips of different fabrics. You can also additionally decorate the product with braid or some bright elements.

in the store?

The selection of sleep accessories should be done individually, taking into account the structural features of your body. You can measure the distance from the lower jaw to the shoulder in advance or look for a pillow by trying it on in a store. The second option is considered the most reliable, since in addition to the size of the product great value have the characteristics of its filler. Try lying on a few different pillows and choose the one that seems most convenient. Back accessories should be chosen in the same way. Be prepared for the fact that when you first use a bolster pillow, it is unlikely that it will seem more comfortable than a traditional down pillow. However, over time, your vertebrae will take the correct position.

Fillers and covers

Cushion cushions filled with buckwheat husks are very popular. This is an inexpensive and completely natural filler. Another eco-friendly option for bedding accessories is herbs. Such pillows are not only pleasant to the touch and create a micro-massage effect, but also fill the air with a pleasant aroma that has a beneficial effect on the sleeper’s body. Synthetic fillers are also popular, in particular polyurethane foam and latex. If the neck cushion will be used primarily in the bedroom, you will need a practical pillowcase made of natural fabric that is pleasant to the touch. For decorative accessories, covers can be made of any materials, but it is desirable that they are also easily removed if necessary.

Attention: if you have serious illnesses musculoskeletal system, it makes sense to ask the supervising doctor for help in selecting a pillow. The right choice sleep accessories can have a significant therapeutic effect in many pathologies and accelerate the improvement of the patient’s condition. A worthy example of medical products - this product is able to adapt to the individual parameters of its owner’s body and provide high-quality support for his spine. You can use this accessory without any special medical indications.
