How to fill an upholstered chair with balls. Filler for frameless furniture

Given: sagging Olme bean bag chair, IKEA. Filler from the HomeMe store.
Task- add filler to the chair without scattering it around the room.
Tools: needles, threads, steam ripper, scissors, antistatic agent, sheet of paper, wide tape, paper clips.

1. Opening the chair cover turned out to be not so easy: the zipper slider was hidden in the flap, there was no key fob on it, but there was an automatic stopper, so you couldn’t move it with your fingers.

To unfasten such a lock, we took a thick needle (we didn’t have a paperclip at hand), inserted it into the eye of the slider under the safety lock that prevented it from moving, and pulled.

2. There was no zipper on the inner bag, but near the top we easily found the area through which the filler was poured into it - there the seam faces outward. Lifting the top and shaking out all the balls, we ripped out about 10 cm of the seam.

Secret ingredient our experiment - antistatic! The filler granules are really highly electrified, and we had the task of doing everything as carefully as possible, so we literally treated everything with the product: the fabric of the bag near the seam, the bag with the filler near the place where it will spill out, the funnel (more about it below), and even preventatively sprayed a little into the bag itself and the bag with the filler. Important: if you have sensitive skin, wear gloves: you will most likely get your fingers wet with the product.

3. So that the balls did not have a single chance to escape, we made a funnel: we rolled a landscape sheet into a tube and secured it with tape. The edges were trimmed with scissors.

4. We cleaned one of the corners of the bag as much as possible from the balls, cut off the very edge, sprayed antistatic agent inside (be careful: the gas pressure may scatter the balls) and cut off the corner so that the diameter of the hole was slightly smaller than the diameter of the funnel.

5. Use wide tape to attach the funnel to the bag. The easiest way was to first flatten it and secure it to the bag with paper clips.

6. Let's pour it in!

This stage required teamwork: one lifted the top of the chair, holding the funnel so that it fit snugly into the ripped seam and did not pop out, while the other held the bag of filling.

7. Hurray, the bag is full! We sewed up the chair easily and quickly using a machine, and sealed the bag with the remaining filling by simply bending the tip of the funnel and sealing it with tape.

8. We reinserted the inner bag into the cover (which, taking advantage of the opportunity, we washed), and at the same time fastened the top of the inner bag and the outer cover with a couple of stitches.

So, the experiment was a success! The required amount of filler got into the chair without a single ball falling to the floor. There is no need to vacuum and be afraid that the cat will eat plastic.

Notes and useful tips
1. The photo shows how different in size the granules that were in the chair and those that we poured there are different. To be honest, the chair remains just as comfortable, the difference is noticeable only when you run your hand along the tightly stuffed side of the bag - you feel the relief that the large balls provide. If you don’t want to repeat our mistake when buying filler, pay attention to the diameter of its granules.

2. It is better to glue the edges of the funnel with tape not only on the outside but also, if possible, on the inside, otherwise the balls, when poured, will get clogged between the layers of paper and slow down the process. Do not make the hole in the funnel too narrow - ours was about 5 cm, so the balls poured out slowly and periodically created a plug (if this happened, you just need to crush the funnel a little).

4. Periodically check the fullness of the chair. It is possible that you are so accustomed to a slightly sagging, and therefore more pliable, chair that sitting in a noticeably more stuffed bag you will feel uncomfortable.

We hope our experience will be useful to you. Don't be afraid to experiment: Kvartblog will always support you!

The same steps are performed for the inner cover, but no more than 35 cm is left for the zipper. All seams obtained are ironed;

All seams must be overlocked
  • For the remaining unstitched sections, zippers are pinned or basted. Their middle should be in the center of the pressed seam. After adjustment, the zippers are sewn in;
  • as a result of the actions performed, the seams of the bag will have a tubular irregular shape, which taper slightly at the top;

How to sew a zipper correctly
After the wedges are sewn together, you will get the following base:
  • The handle of the future chair is made, for which the prepared part is folded, and only inside out. It is stitched in a place where there is a long edge. Then it is turned inside out and ironed;
  • The existing blanks of both covers are turned inside out. A top is sewn to the outer cover, which is basted to the outer pipe, after which the handle is inserted;

For ease of use, zippers should be sewn into the bags.
  • The bottom of both covers is ground off, and the resulting circles are attached. After the work is completed, the covers are turned right side out.
