Homemade garden trimmer. How to make a trimmer from a grinder and other electrical appliances with your own hands


Summer is coming and the grass has already grown noticeably, while this is not critical, but you should already think about how to cut it. I will show you how to make a simple trimmer out of a grinder to mow the grass. More precisely, it will be a special device in which the grinder will be installed. After mowing, it can be removed again and used for its intended purpose. There is little point in buying a ready-made trimmer if you only need it 1-2 times per season.

How to make a trimmer from a grinder with your own hands

The first thing to do is a bracket for gripping the body of the grinder. To do this, take a steel plate and bend it on both sides along the body. I took the plate already bent on one side initially. Now I just need to fold the second edge.


I apply to the case of the angle grinder. With a marker I notice the place of the bend.


Then I clamp it in a vise and bend it with hammer blows. I saw off the excess with the same grinder.


The tool body has threaded holes on both sides. A handle is screwed into these holes in order to saw both on the left side and on the right, the handle is made flip. It is precisely for these holes that the trimmer bracket will be fixed.
Holes must be drilled on the sides of the bracket to match the holes on the sides of the tool. Notice with a marker.


We drill in a vise.


Next, in the bracket, you need to attach a guide along the length of the angle grinder body or shorter.


We weld. We knock down the scale and clean it with a metal brush.


Now the barbell. It will be made of steel pipe. At the end of the pipe we will make a bevel so that the handle is attached at an angle. Mark the cut line with a marker.


Saw off a corner.


We weld. We also knock down scale with a hammer, clean it with a brush for metal.


Now it's time to install the grinder itself in the seat. To do this, unscrew the protective circle.


So that the trimmer does not touch the ground and is at a certain distance, wheels will be attached to it. They can be taken from an old and unnecessary baby carriage or any other cart. In extreme cases, make yourself out of wooden rounds.

We insert the grinder into the seat.


We attach the wheel with the bracket and fix it all with a bolt. Tighten well with a wrench. We do the same procedure on the opposite side.


The trimmer is almost ready for mowing the grass.



It remains to make the cutting part. To do this, we take segments of a steel cable or a specialized nylon wire for trimmers. We pass cross-by-cross through the clamping nut, through the holes for the key.


We screw the nut with cutting cables onto the grinder.


We fix the wire with electrical tape.
And so the device is necessary and it may well fit you to mow the lawn in front of the house.

On the farm, a lawn mower is not an essential device. Its need especially affects the summer cottage, during the harvest period and the rest season.

Every normal owner wants to have a beautiful well-groomed one on his site. Here you have to work hard with a scythe, purchase a quality lawn mower or assemble this device yourself. In the latter case, its composition will be as follows:

  • engine,
  • knives,
  • comfortable handle.

The motor will need power, so you will need a very long cord with a plug, as well as a switch. You can make the job easier if you attach wheels to the bottom of this technique. The whole thing has to be held up somehow. This function will be performed by the framework.

Process of creation

The initial stage of self-creation of a lawn mower is the selection of parts. The most important thing is the presence of the engine. It can be taken from already unused household appliances, it can be removed from some power tool:

  • drills,
  • vacuum cleaner,
  • chainsaws,
  • Bulgarians.

The minimum required engine parameter is 500 V. Better than 1000 V. So it will be possible to work at low speeds. Yes, and sharpening knives will become an obligation more rare. The selection of the engine is influenced by the diameter of the knife and the total dimensions of this equipment. The larger the working area for it, the higher the power of the engine should be.

cutting part

The key component of the mechanism is the knife. Its quality determines the life and efficiency of the device. For its manufacture, solid steel of the highest quality is required.

The knife can be made solid up to 50 cm in length. In it, in the center, arrange a hole where the screw will enter. The knife will be sharpened on both sides. Its shape can be made slightly curved.

Another version of the knife is compound. The strip is attached to the steel with bolts or by welding a pair of metal, maximally sharpened pieces. A steel strip can be made in a trapezoid format. This will protect the knife from layering the grass.

You can also create a knife in the form of a solid round disk. It also needs to be sharpened well. Such a form, unlike other forms, when colliding with a stone or a stick, will withstand such attacks and not be damaged.

Pen

The handle for the upcoming apparatus can be taken from an old stroller. From there, you can borrow the wheels and frame.

If you can’t get a stroller, you can use a metal pipe to weld the handle.

Electrician

The power cord can be removed from any unnecessary household appliance. If its length is small, you can use extension cords.

Wheels can be borrowed not only from a stroller, but also from an old vacuum cleaner.

Assembly process

For the frame, you need a piece of metal, or plywood with a thickness of 8 mm or more. Here you will need to create a protective metal casing. This will reduce the chance of your lawn mower breaking down.

The necessary tools are here:

  • welding equipment;
  • hacksaw (metal view).
  1. First, the frame for the motor is prepared. Although plywood is suitable, it is better to take a sheet of metal with a thickness of at least 3 mm. It is more resistant to deformation. The size of the frame is determined by the length of the blade and the width of the lawn mower (this parameter is usually no more than 60 cm). A square is cut from this sheet with a side similar to the width of this unit. In the center of the square, holes are created for the motor. The flanged motor must be fastened to the frame with the shaft down. If the engine has ears, one more mount is welded to the frame.
  2. For the manufacture of the simplest casing, a metal tin can is used. It is better to make the casing high, so it will become a protector for the electrics of the lawn mower. It must be put on the motor shaft. Then put on a knife (carefully sharpened). The whole mechanism is connected by a bolt. Wheels are attached to the frame. For them, it is necessary to weld corners with holes to it. The diameter of the wheels should allow the knife to pass freely 5-7 cm above the ground. If he goes lower, he will remain in the ground. If it is higher, it will crush the grass, and not cut it.

  1. The handle needs to be edited for the growth of the main user of the future lawn mower. Its optimal length is about 90 cm.

After this assembly, it remains only to connect the power cord.

Advice! You can protect yourself from cut grass by attaching a net over the lawn mower.

As you know, Soviet "washers" were stamped from strong metal. Their engines are optimally matched in terms of performance and power for the intended lawn mower.

The superior steel hull will act as a defensive skirt and guide when the grass is folded to the side.

It also uses two pulleys and a belt that transmits momentum from the engine to the knife mechanism. The motor is mounted on the platform and connected to only one phase.

Such a unit will work in the area near the house, since it is connected to the network with an electric cord. To make the device more mobile, a special coil wire is used - an extension cord with a cross section corresponding to the power of the motor. Its minimum length is 40 m.

Drill Based

Here, instead of a drill, a wide knife is attached to the drill used. The drill itself is attached to the created frame along with its handle. And the drill cord will be sent to the network.

Such units are suitable for work in areas near curbs and under trees.

It is important to use a low-speed drill with good power and dynamics of 1500 - 3000 rpm. You also need a competent selection of power to the width of the swath. Motor overload is not allowed. Such a drill generates the required torque, and the grass is easily mowed. In work, it is necessary to pause so that the engine "rests".

The platform for the engine should be narrow so that it is convenient to work with the wall platform. The stability of the unit is affected by the position of the center of gravity. The lower it is, the less the platform overturns.

If you intend to create a more powerful modification with parameters of 1500 - 6000 W, then the engine installation will go to a special sole. A suitable motor is asynchronous: it makes less noise.

The undercarriage is metal wheels covered with rubber. They have a wide projector. So the grass will be less wrinkled. And here, the bearing units in the axle bushings are stronger than plastic liners.

The deck and knife are created from an old frying pan and a steel plate (steel is tool). This knife attachment design has high efficiency. It is important not to violate the ratio and profile of sharpened edges. In work, it is better to adhere to such drawings:

A quick-running assembly will perform best when properly centered. Even a small runout can cause strong vibration, damage to the connections, and play will occur due to the development of landing positions.

Chainsaw based

Here a frame is cooked from pieces of pipe. The engine from the chainsaw is focused on it. Due to its power, the lawn mower will overcome even small shrubs. The use of such an engine does not imply the presence of additional defense. It already has a powerful protection against moisture and dust. And his air filters get cluttered less often.

Suitable wheel assemblies have a 180 degree turn at the hinge. A separate functional unit is connected by belts with an independent chainsaw drive. The torque follows on the discs. There, the cutting tool is metal chains. Their length is 25 cm.

More:

  1. From an unnecessary chainsaw, the tire and the "steering wheel" are unscrewed.
  2. The handle is made from water pipes with the possibility of their regulation in height.
  3. An asterisk is taken from the chainsaw.
  4. A piece of a pipe 8 cm long and with a diameter of 5 cm is placed on it in the desired position. This segment is processed on a lathe.
  5. You will need another piece of such a pipe. Same length. Diameter = 5.8 cm. It is put on the previous piece. This results in a tubular telescopic shaft.
  6. For fastening pipes, special M6 bolts are required, equipped with lock nuts. The correct positions of the bolts are diametrically parallel to each other.
  7. Make several holes. This makes it easier to adjust the cutting height of the grass. The pipes will move relative to each other. And this movement slightly compensates for the imbalance.

After these operations, the knife base is prepared. A steel disc is welded to another pipe (steel - sheet). Its diameter is 18 cm.

Interestingly, such a modification can serve for years.


Lawn mower or lawn mower from Yuri Leskov

Vacuum cleaner based

The required details here are:

  • wheels of large diameters (create a smooth free movement);
  • welding equipment;
  • two steel sheets;
  • saw/hacksaw.

Execution instructions:

  1. A platform is cut out from the indicated sheets. It will house the engine from the old vacuum cleaner. The engine will focus its shaft in the lower area. The engine also needs a protective casing. Casing thickness - 1.2 mm. Holes are made in it 4 mm larger than the shaft. The engine is positioned 3-4 cm from the ground, otherwise the unit will break down during operation.
  2. A metal disk is placed on the motor shaft.
  3. The knife is prepared in several copies. A disk with a diameter of 3.8 - 4 cm is cut out of a metal sheet. The disk is put on the gross disk end and welded to it.

Capture width - 25 cm maximum.

Pros of a homemade model:

  1. Saving money.
  2. Environmental friendliness.
  1. The height of the knife cannot be controlled.
  2. Weak security.
  3. High probability of breakage.

These disadvantages are not difficult to eliminate. It is important to have the necessary skills here.

  1. The knife will dull less often if it is made of high quality steel.
  2. To keep the motor shaft intact, the knife needs to be sharpened unevenly. It should be sharp towards the edge. The place with which it touches the shaft cannot be touched, since the grass near the attachment site of the knife and shaft is cut rather poorly, but only imposed on the knife.
  3. You can arrange the regulation of the handle in length.
  4. The knife can be protected from contact with the ground. To do this, you need to make safety bumpers.
  5. For cut grass, a special collector can be provided.
  6. Before turning on the unit, you need to carefully check its condition: the sharpness of the knives, the reliability of the fasteners, the free movement of the wheels.
  7. Before work, clean the working area: eliminate debris, stones, pieces of wood. They may damage the machine or injure the mower.
  8. Keep children and animals out of the work area.
  9. When working, push the unit away from you.
  10. During a pause in operation, disconnect the unit from the power supply by pulling the plug from the socket.
  11. Do not work in rain or on wet surfaces.
  12. Clean or repair the unit only after its mechanism has thoroughly cooled down.
  13. Experts recommend making a blocking button in the device. It will act if the knife is damaged or jammed. Here is the diagram:

Types of lawn mower repairs

Petrol modifications. They are extremely difficult to make. But the main thing is to know typical malfunctions, to be able to identify them and replace elements. Many household models are equipped with gasoline two-prong internal combustion engines. In homemade products, you can find motors from drills, chainsaws, etc.

The most common problem is related to:

  • engine start,
  • lack of movement
  • huge vibrations at work.

The motor starts, holds speed, there is no rotation of the knives. This is a mechanical problem. Check fasteners to the output motor shaft. If it's broken, replace it.

The engine does not start well, but it works stably. This is a problem with carburetor idle technology. It may also be the wrong proportions of the combustible composition. Mix fuel with oil in the correct ratio. If it doesn't help, remove the carburetor and adjust the idle technology.

The engine does not start well and does not work well. Here you need to check the carburetor. Possible blockage in the fuel jets. Filters can also become clogged: fuel and air. They should be changed, and the jets should be blown.

The engine starts well, but does not cope with the load. This is an air filter problem. It needs to be cleaned or replaced.

The gasoline engine does not start even with a high-quality fuel supply. This is a problem with the ignition technology. Coil needs to be checked. In case of visible violations, it must be replaced. There may be a dilemma in candles. You need to diagnose each candle. They can be replaced.

Prevention

It is also very important to monitor the condition of the carburetor. It needs to be cleaned periodically. Its casing is dismantled. The screws are loosened. It comes out of the plastic. Garbage (if any) is removed from it. There is a cover under the casing. Below it is a carburetor. He is filming. First, the fuel hose is disconnected (the fuel tank and the carburetor communicate through it). It may leak fuel. You need to be more careful. The carburetor is removed, held on a pair of bolts. Next comes the analysis.

The bolt holding the fuel compartment cover is unscrewed. When cleaning, special tools are needed. WD-40 is fine. It is necessary to clean the fuel channels of this mechanism well. A thin copper wire is required. Cleaning begins with the fuel compartment. The mechanism is heavily soaked. The carburetor is left alone for a short time. This process is repeated several times. Channels are cleaned with copper wire. Let's pressurize them. After these operations, the mechanism is assembled in the reverse algorithm.

Clogged compartments and channels are the most common cause of engine problems. Constant monitoring of their cleanliness will seriously extend the life of the engine and make it work more efficiently.

For a long time I thought about what to make a device with my own hands to mow the grass on the site. I decided to adapt a grinder for this case. The weight is small, there is a good mounting mechanism. I also wanted to make a homemade trimmer or lawn mower so that the grinder, if necessary, could be removed and used for its intended purpose. So far, for the test I decided to do this.

I fixed the grinder to an ordinary chopper with no less ordinary tape. Instead of a standard disc for a grinder, I installed an old disc from a circular saw of suitable sizes. Tried to mow. Normal, but it is necessary to fasten the cord to the handle so that it does not interfere and does not fall under the "braid".

Was satisfied. The only thing I added later was to increase the diameter of the saw blade. With a large diameter, it cuts faster. And since I had to remove the protective cover, the grass stopped accumulating under it. I still recommend that if you decide to make such a "lawn mower", make a home-made casing, more, after all, it will be safer. By the way, the grinder has factory threaded mounting holes for attaching the handle in different positions. You can use them to attach the grinder to a homemade frame on wheels, which will make your lawn mower look more like a real one :). The finished frame on wheels can be taken from the baby stroller, and a bar with holes can be welded to it from above, to which the grinder can be fixed. That's all, I told you how to quickly and easily make a lawn mower or trimmer with your own hands at home. Such a homemade lawn mower can cut not only grass, but also shrubs.

Be careful when operating such a lawn mower, observe safety precautions. Make sure that the cord from the drive does not fall into the work area, this can lead not only to damage to the wire, but also to electric shock. It is not allowed to work with an open disk near the legs, this can lead to injury. Do not operate this trimmer in the presence of small children. Their behavior may be unpredictable, in which case you may not have time to turn off the device.

This, of course, is not an “industrial” model, but the very principle of manufacturing a trimmer can be taken for a more powerful model. I was somewhat strained by the blades and the way they were attached. Still, it is necessary to be more reliable, otherwise, in the event of a separation at high speeds, it can seriously injure the observer or the mower himself. As a security element, I would not put a switch, but a button. So that if a do-it-yourself trimmer falls out of your hands, it stops and does not injure anyone.

Any garden plot needs grass mowing. An electric or gasoline trimmer is expensive, and not every owner can afford to buy one. Therefore, some craftsmen have learned how to make a trimmer from a grinder on their own.

Every master has a Bulgarian. This is the most suitable tool for creating a trimmer. Unlike store devices, it is stronger in power and has good revs. Consider how to make a trimmer from a grinder with your own hands, the order of work:

  1. First prepare the staple. It is designed to girth the body of the grinder. A metal plate is applied to the body and bent.
  2. On both sides of the body there are threaded holes in which the toggle handle is attached. A trimmer bracket is attached to them.
  3. Holes are drilled in the bracket on both sides so that they correspond to the openings located on the tool body. For accuracy, marks are made on the part with a marker, clamped with a vise and drilled.
  4. Then a guide is attached to the bracket. Its size should correspond to the length of the body or be slightly shorter. The guide is attached with a welding machine, the remaining scale is knocked down. The part is polished with a brush for metal.
  5. A handle (rod) is made from a metal pipe. To fix the handle under a slope, the tip of the pipe is cut under the bevel. The finished handle is welded to the structure, the scale is knocked down and the part is cleaned with a brush.
  6. To attach the tool, you need to unscrew the protective disk of the grinder.
  7. Then the homemade product is installed on wheels. To do this, you can borrow wheels from a trolley or baby carriage with brackets.
  8. First, the grinder is mounted, then the wheel with the bracket. Everything is bolted on. On the other hand, they make the same fasteners.
  9. The cutting unit is made of steel cable. A nylon wire designed for trimmers is suitable. It is threaded through the clamp nut and the key hole in a criss-cross pattern. Then the nut is tightened together with the cables.
  10. The wire is fixed with electrical tape.
