So that day, as usual, I walked towards my house along a small road surrounded by old chestnut trees. It was already about seven in the evening, and the farewell rays of the setting sun were barely breaking through their thick branches. That year, autumn came quite early, bringing with it cold and rainy weather.
I, as usual, went up to the fourth floor, and after fumbling a little with the keys, I crossed the threshold of my apartment. The empty room greeted me with cold silence, in which a dense, almost tangible silence reigned, which even the sounds of my own steps could not disturb. There was complete silence in the house; no sounds were heard even from the neighboring apartments, which was somewhat unusual, given the almost complete lack of sound insulation.
Having briefly examined all the rooms, I was convinced that the apartment was still in perfect order, and was about to leave when something strange happened. It is worth explaining here that almost the opposite front door there is a room where there used to be a bedroom, which I converted into my office when I still lived there. The only window in this room did not look out onto the street, but onto the balcony that ran along the living room and my office. The door leading to the balcony could only be opened and closed from the outside; it was impossible to open it from the inside.
In the corridor where I was at that moment, there was a small mirror that reflected part of the office and the balcony. I had already opened the first door and began to open the second when I noticed a vague shadow in the mirror that slipped past the window overlooking the balcony. At that moment, I did not attach any importance to this, mistaking it for the light of car headlights reflected on the walls (which happened there every time a car passed by the house) and continued to open the door.
Then the sound of the balcony door opening reached my ears, which certainly could not have happened, since the door can only be opened from the living room (which I already mentioned), and not from being on the balcony. Moreover, a few minutes before, I checked the lock myself and made sure that it was locked. But strangely enough, even realizing the impossibility of what was happening, I continued to stand still, intensely listening to all the sounds in the living room. Then I heard heavy footsteps, as if someone was walking in the direction from the balcony door towards the corridor. At that same second, I turned off the light in the hallway and rushed headlong onto the landing, slamming the door behind me, and with the usual movement I turned the key in the lock twice. The same footsteps were heard behind the door, and then the door handle lowered and rose twice, as if whoever was on the other side of the door was trying to get out. Then this creature jerked sharply door handle towards myself, and I again heard his footsteps moving away from the door. Having mentally praised the castle, thanks to which I managed to avoid meeting the occupant of the empty apartment, I immediately locked the second door and left the house in a hurry, fearing that this creature would still manage to find a way out, and our next meeting might not end so well (for me anyway).
Two weeks later, having plucked up courage, I nevertheless returned to that apartment and did not find anything unusual there. Everything was in its place balcony door It was still locked with a key. In short, there was nothing to indicate that anyone else was there.
