Have a good time everyone. Here is an analogue of a vice for drilling machine. The hero of our article today was able to assemble it. To begin with, the author took two pieces of profile pipe with dimensions of 30 mm by 25 mm.
One of the pieces is slightly shorter than the second.
Next, he marked the locations for the through holes.

I made one hole at 5 mm, the second at 8 mm.

Then he made another hole in these places.
Then I sawed out the unnecessary pieces and removed them using pliers.

Next, the author cut threads in the holes to 5 mm.
Then he took two pieces of 130mm long square rod.

I made marks and, holding the rods in a vice, made holes, first with a small drill, and then with a 5.5 mm drill.

Then I cut the threads in these holes.
Then the author took such a mount. He will make clamps out of it, cutting off all the excess.

Next he took epoxy resin.
I threaded an M6 bolt into a plastic sleeve and filled it with epoxy resin.

I put a washer on top and tightened it all with a nut.

The author also coated the plastic bushing on the outside with epoxy resin and put on a rubber bushing.

Then I screwed this bolt with bushings into a square rod.
I took a nut in a plastic case, poured epoxy into it and screwed it onto the bolt. (Such a nut can be replaced with a regular wing nut.)

Then I connected all the parts.

The author advises taking this bolt a little shorter for more convenient operation.
These are the two clamps the author came up with.
This is what they look like after installation on the drilling machine bed.
Thank you all very much. See you again in the next article.

DIY vices: we create different types of clamping devices. 64 photo ideas for different purposes

Bench vices are necessary equipment in the workshop of any man, without whom it is difficult to do in one form or another of work.

It is not at all necessary to place them in the garage; you can set up a corner for a vice at home, for example, using a table or an ordinary stool.

Why do you need a bench vise?

When processing or sharpening any part, it is necessary to fix it firmly and reliably, that is, to hold it in a certain position. The photo of the vice shows the operating principle of this equipment.

The parameters and dimensions of the vice are determined depending on what type of tool needs to be firmly held.

The design of a carpenter's vice includes:

  • chassis screw;
  • handle;
  • movable and fixed sponge;
  • base plate.

Main types of bench vices

Before making a vice with your own hands, you need to decide on the choice of work associated with it.

All types of vices are divided into two types:

  • non-rotary have more simple design and they are easiest to make yourself. The part is fixed strictly in one position.
  • Rotary vices are most often adapted for drilling on a machine. During operation, it is possible to rotate the workpiece without unclenching it.

The body material of the vice is most often made of durable cast iron. It is important to know that cast iron is not intended to be exposed to high temperatures; it is suitable for these purposes. steel metal.

If the work will be carried out with small-sized parts, you should not increase financial costs and make compact small vices.

A small vice with a ball joint base is useful on the farm for processing very small parts that can be secured individually. These are mini-vises with suction cups, installed on a glass or well-polished surface. But they are suitable for rare non-serious work.

Please note that it is wise to install soft attachments on the fastening part for working with soft parts, so as not to cause damage to them. A vice with the least amount of play when the jaws are fully extended is the ideal option.

A vice without rotary mechanism, unless, of course, it is useful in work.

Work on making a bench vice at home

Carpenter's vices, made independently at home, will save significantly family budget than their store-bought ready-made “brothers”. And a huge plus is that the product can be made according to personal preferences and for certain individual species works

It is absolutely easy to find material for the structure, it could be: a part technical pipe, used jack, old lathes, presses, etc.

And if you go to a metal collection point, you will undoubtedly find matching part for a vice, which will cost you a penny.

Classic homemade vice

There are many types of vices, but the most popular and traditional is the type with steel material. Such a vice will be much more reliable than a factory-made one.

The structure consists of:

  • a steel plate of at least 3 mm, but it can be much thicker;
  • external and internal channel (120 and 100 mm);
  • steel lugs;
  • turning cutters 2 pieces;
  • a small piece of reinforcement (rod for a gate);
  • a nut (2 pieces), a pin or a screw of a certain diameter that corresponds to the rod;
  • washer (2 pieces) of the same diameter with the lead screw;
  • screw pair 335 mm;
  • To secure the propeller chassis, a thick plate is needed.

It is necessary to separate the lead screw with washers on both sides of the plate. One of the two washers must be secured with a cotter pin or a locking ring, so that the part is completely removable; you must first weld the screw thread to it.

The handle should also be collapsible on one side, and reverse side It is worth welding it with a nut. It is necessary to weld a nut with a channel from the screws flush to the plate. To make the channel inside with the screw move easier while moving, it is recommended to lightly process it with a file.

Sponges are welded to the so-called ears, made from turning cutters. They are placed in the right place when the lead screw is screwed in, so the ears stand at the ideal distance from each other.

But you can also connect them with wire for greater convenience, so in the future it will be more convenient to fix uneven parts, the shape of which is expanded towards the bottom.

Such homemade vice Allows you to process larger parts.

To perform work in a home workshop, it is recommended to choose the simplest fixed vice for the machine.

It’s not at all difficult to make them yourself; you just have to watch the videos and recommendations, which can be easily found on the Internet and first draw up the drawings correctly.

DIY vise photo

We make a vice with our own hands. Drawings, procedure, materials used.

The vice is an indispensable device when carrying out the most various works.

A new tool is expensive, and different vices are needed. Let's look at ways to make a clamping device with your own hands.

Bench vice made from corrugated pipe

In order to make a reliable bench vise, you need welding machine and the following components:

  1. Several sections of professional pipe different sizes;
  2. Hardened steel stud with coarse thread;
  3. Double height nuts;

A drawing of a vice for a workbench is shown in the illustration. This is a universal option; changes in design are possible, depending on your tasks.

Manufacturing procedure:

On the pipe larger diameter(body) supports are welded from below. A rear wall (flange) made of 3-5 mm steel is welded on the rear side. A hole is drilled in the center and the running nut is welded. The rear jaw is welded on top, opposite the front support.

A front flange made of 3-5 mm steel is welded onto the end of the internal movable pipe. A stud with welded lock nuts is inserted into it. Thrust washers must be installed on both sides of the flange. An eyelet is welded onto the front end of the stud for the knob. The front jaw is attached to the top of the movable pipe.

IMPORTANT! The gap between the body and the moving pipe cannot be painted. There should be grease there. The same lubricant is applied to the threads of the stud.

For reliability, metal plates made of hardened steel can be screwed onto the jaws, for example, holders from turning tools, with notches made with a file. Homemade bench vise, shown in the photo:

Carpenter's vice for workbench

For processing wooden products you need a reliable clamp. There is a factory version of the vice integrated into the carpentry workbench.

It is easy to make such a device yourself. Let's take a look at a typical drawing:

Sponges are made from soft, plastic wood, such as pine. Material that is too hard will leave marks on the workpiece. The fixed part is attached to the workbench. A furniture thrust nut is mounted on it from the inside for worm gear. It is necessary to secure guide rods on the sides of the knob to ensure parallel movement.

The movable jaw is equipped with a thrust device for the handle - for example, a fluoroplastic washer. The collar pin is rigidly attached to the handle.

Advice! For strength, sponges can be made from several layers of plywood.

Because it's your personal tool, it will look just the way you need it to do the job. You can whip up some mixture of a clamp and a vice:

For rough processing of workpieces, a clamping attachment on the workbench leg is useful. The design looks primitive, but it gets the job done.

Specialized clamping fixtures

We looked at options on how to make a classic vice. However, for full-fledged plumbing or carpentry work, special tools are needed:

Angle vise

Designed for fixing workpieces at right angles.

Despite the apparent complexity of execution, such a clamp can be made with your own hands.

The frame is made of steel with a thickness of at least 4 mm. The stop corners are positioned strictly at an angle of 90°. A bracket for the running nut is installed symmetrically to the thrust planes. Using a hardened steel pin, a movable retaining angle, also 4-5 mm thick, is supplied to the stops. A flange for the driver is mounted in the center of the retaining corner.

IMPORTANT! The thrust nut and flange must not be rigidly fixed. Otherwise, it will be possible to clamp only workpieces of the same thickness.

When carrying out welding work, it is precisely necessary to fasten workpieces of different sizes.

To do this, the thrust nut and flange on the retaining angle are attached using an axis, which makes it possible to change the horizontal position of the pin collar.

Vise for drilling machine

A fairly common device of narrow specialization. Drilling machines are usually equipped with clamps, but this increases their cost.

You can make the device yourself. Moreover, a wooden vice is suitable for most drilling work.

For production you will need:

  • plywood sheet 10-12 mm;
  • two smooth pins for guides;
  • threaded pin for the knob;
  • furniture thrust nut;
  • screws, nails, PVA glue;

The frame is made of plywood. It is necessary to draw a drawing and carry out all the work on site.

From the resulting massif 25 mm thick, we cut identical bars.

We try on the blanks on the bed.

We use steel or aluminum tubes as guides. All holes must be strictly parallel to each other. For high-quality holes, it is better to use not a drilling machine, but a milling cutter with a groove cutter. We check the assembled structure.

IMPORTANT! The play in the holes should be minimal.

We install a furniture nut into the thrust strip. We fix the bars on the frame.

IMPORTANT! The movable jaw should not touch the frame; to do this, its height is reduced by 1-2 mm.

To fix the knob in the movable lip, ordinary nails in the form of locking pins are used. Homemade vice for a drilling machine is ready:

Vise for tying fishing flies

The device for tying a popular fishing lure is a rotating mechanism with a vice for the hook fixed at a certain angle.

The rotating mechanism can be made from anything, but the vice should be approached with special care. The jaws must be strong, otherwise it will be impossible to hold the steel hook.

The secret is simple - a homemade vise for front sights can be made from two high-speed cutters for lathe. First, the metal is “tempered”, then after processing it is hardened again. In conclusion, a video about a homemade vice made from what was in the garage. It's quite possible for everyone.

DIY vice

The most important tool for a mechanic is a vice. Without them, it is impossible to perform most locksmith operations. Therefore, any novice locksmith first wants to purchase this the right tool. A situation may also arise when the old factory vice is simply broken and cannot be repaired.

In such cases, buying a new similar tool is not always profitable, since they are far from cheap. Therefore, many mechanics decide to make a vice with their own hands, which in turn can be a good experience for beginners, and experienced specialists will be able to make high-quality and comfortable vices for themselves.

You can make such a tool in one day from scrap materials, or you can collect the necessary components within a month and make a vice that is not much different from a factory one. In fact, the truth is somewhere in the middle. This article will describe in detail instructions on how to make a vice with your own hands within a few days without special costs.

Vise drawings

Such work can only be performed in a small locksmith workshop with mandatory presence welding machine, electric drill, Bulgarians and others hand tools.

In addition, you need to purchase materials such as a piece of steel channel No. 6, 0.5 m long, 0.3 m2 of sheet steel 4-5 mm thick and 30 cm of steel angle 50x50 mm, 18 M6 bolts with nuts and a piece of thick sheet metal for making sponges.

IN in this case It is impossible to do without the services of a turner, since it will be necessary to make a screw with a diameter of 16 mm, mill two plates for the clamping jaws and turn two nuts in which the screw itself will rotate.

Stages of making a homemade vice

Approximate step by step instructions How to make a vice with your own hands at home may look like this:

A piece of channel 30 cm long is cut with a grinder. It will serve as a moving part of the vice. On one side, a 4 mm thick plate with a recess is welded to the base of this workpiece, into which a clamping screw with a groove is inserted. In order for the screw itself to be securely fastened in this recess, to this plate with inside A locking plate of the same thickness is secured with two bolts.

Using a grinder, a plate measuring 25x6.2 cm is cut out of a sheet, to which two 50x50 corners 25 cm long are welded. This design is the stationary part of the vice. 6 holes with a diameter of 6 mm are drilled in the shelves of this workpiece.

From the same sheet, another blank measuring 30x20 mm with a side protrusion measuring 10x8 mm is cut out with a grinder. 12 holes with a diameter of 6 mm are drilled into it along the edges. It will serve as the base for the vice on which the entire structure is attached. Two locking plates for the fixed nut are welded to it on the protruding part.

Two blanks are cut from angle steel, holes are drilled in them, and threads are cut for attaching the clamping jaws. Then one of these blanks is welded to the stationary part of the vice, and the second to the one that will move inside the frame.

The frame itself is first secured to the locksmith's table. Holes are also drilled in the jaws, through which they are attached to the clamping plates with bolts. A knob is inserted into the screw and the reliability of the fastening is checked again.

Additionally, you can strengthen the design of the vice by welding gussets and locking plates, as shown in the video and photo. These bench vices are easy to disassemble, so it is advisable to paint them with anti-corrosion paint for metal and install them on permanent place.

In the same way, you can make a vice for a drilling machine, only in this case the attachment to the machine bed will be slightly different depending on its design.

As can be seen from the above description, making a homemade vice is not at all difficult. You just need to have the desire and basic skills to work with metal. Below we recommend watching a video on how to make a machine vice.

DIY vice

A vice is an indispensable device for a variety of jobs. A new tool is expensive, but it is extremely necessary at home.

The simplest and cheap option, make your own vise from materials that are easy to find. Today we will look at the possibility self-made various types vice.

Materials for bench vices

We will need:

  1. Channel No. 8P – 1 m.
  2. Corner No. 4.0 – 1 m.
  3. M16 hairpin – 1 pc.
  4. Nuts M16 – 6 pcs.
  5. Turns for pipes Ø40 mm.
  6. Metal sheet 240x160x6
  7. The strip for sponges is 160x40x5, but it is better to make the sponges thicker, for example, 8-10 mm.

Let's start making parts:

Nuts for the movement mechanism

To make the movement mechanism, you need to weld two nuts together. To do this, we screw them onto a pin so that there is a small gap of 0.2-0.5 mm between them.

We scald the nuts

If the nuts are pressed tightly together, the screw will clamp during operation. We weld the nuts in a circle. At this stage you will need two pieces.

Base and movement mechanism

The base of the vice consists of a sheet and two corners welded to it at the edges.

Attention! Remember, to prevent the structure from jamming, it is important for us to maintain the distance between the corners by the width of the channel plus 0.5-1 mm.

Base assembly

Therefore, before welding the corners to the sheet, install a channel in the middle, and along the edges, between the channel and the corner, a piece of cardboard or, if available, several transformer plates.

Movement mechanism

After welding the corners, draw a line in the center of the base and position the prepared nuts. To do this, screw them onto an M16 screw.

You can place regular staples from a stapler under the screw to lift it closer to the middle of the frontal plane.

Look at the photo, everything will become clear. And we make an indent from the edge of the sheet inward by 5 - 6 mm.

Stapling staples

To fill the space between the nut and the base of the vice, you can place a 3-4 mm plate.

Remember! How accurately you set the nuts will determine how well the movement mechanism will work.

After installing the nuts, you can install the cover. The body should look like in the photo.

Housing assembly

At this stage, check the free movement of the channel; if it is very tight, then remove 0.5 -1 mm. from the walls. The walls will then be not 40, but 39 mm.

Checking progress

Next, on one side of the channel, overlapping, we weld a corner and, installing it in the body, mark the place for drilling the hole for the counter nut. We also cook turns to the base. It should look like in the photo.

Housing and movement mechanism assembled

The next step is to weld the remaining turns from the pipes onto the mating part of the vice, cut out and attach the jaws. That's all. We install the pin and fasten it from the inside to the moving part of the vice as in the photo.

Moving mechanism pin

Final stage, paint, dry and put everything together.

The final stage, painting. The product is ready.

Bench vice made from corrugated pipe

In order to make a reliable bench tool yourself, you need a welding machine and the following components:

  1. Several sections of professional pipe of different sizes.
  2. Hardened steel stud with coarse thread.
  3. Double height nuts.

Any home workshop should be equipped with a vice. This simple tool allows you to perform large number various operations. Vices have a wide or narrow purpose depending on the type and design. You can purchase ready-made equipment or make a vice yourself. This article will tell you how to do this.

A vice is a very useful mechanical tool that is used to hold parts during processing. They are especially needed when it is necessary to firmly and securely fasten the workpiece or install it at a safe distance.

The design of the classic vice itself consists of two jaws. One of them is stationary and fixed on the body or on the frame, the other can change its position. The object is secured between the jaws by compressing them using a locking mechanism, which consists of several elements:

  1. The lead screw is made of metal with a trapezoidal thread. The screw is driven using a special handle.
  2. A frame or slab made of cast iron or other heavy material that serves as a support. It can be made of steel or duralumin.
  3. Jaw with screw fastening. When the screw rotates clockwise, the jaw that moves approaches the frame. This way the part is fixed. When the screw is rotated in the opposite direction, the workpiece is released.

To fix the vice itself to the support, several methods can be used:

  • permanent installation in one place with constant use;
  • on a clamp, this implies less reliable fixation, but makes it possible to use it in different places;
  • using suction cups - in this case it is necessary that the surface is perfectly smooth and even.

Types of vices: which devices to choose for different jobs

There are several types of vices, which are classified according to various parameters. One of the main identifying elements is the type of clamping mechanism. Based on this factor, the following types of vices are distinguished:

  • screw;
  • wedge-shaped;
  • with installed diaphragm;
  • eccentric;
  • with pneumatic device.

Depending on their purpose, vices are divided into the following types:

  • carpentry;
  • metalwork;
  • machine tools;
  • manual.

Taking into account the material used, these devices are also divided into types. Carpenter's vices for a workbench are most often made of wood, and metalworking vices are made of metal.

Interesting to know! Vices are also called yews - both definitions are correct. Construction dictionaries characterize this tool as equipment for plumbing or carpentry, used for the purpose of fixing workpieces during various types of machining (this can be drilling, planing or sawing).

A bench vise is the most common type of tool in question. These devices have their own subtypes; they differ in size, or more precisely, in the width of the jaws. This figure can vary from 63 to 200 mm. Small vices are used mainly for household purposes. They are fastened using a lower screw-clamp on a small machine, but more often - on a table or an ordinary stool. Larger vices are installed in industrial workshops and large workshops for the purpose of processing large parts.

Bench vices: price, features and varieties

A vice for metalwork is a necessary part in any industrial workshop. Such equipment is necessarily present in the workshop of an experienced, self-respecting master. Moreover, depending on the shape, type of fastening and the material being processed, they are divided into several types.

Pipe vices are used for fastening pipes or cylindrical parts.

The main advantage of a rotary vice is the ability to fix a part in the required plane and at the desired angle to organize the work process. With their help, you can process the most difficult to reach parts and their areas. At the same time, it is almost impossible to do this with a conventional vice. Like all installations of this type, rotary products can be stationary - these are benchtop carpentry vices that are mounted on workbenches. Another subtype is a vice with a built-in clamp for attaching to a table.

Hydraulic vices are designed to provide more reliable fixation of particularly large parts. They are clamped under pressure compressed air. Basically, such tools are installed on large industrial enterprises. Carpenter's vice price of this type high, and the device is quite complex, so the tool is not intended for home workshops.

Self-centering vices are necessary in high-precision production, that is, where precise fixation of a part in a certain position is required. Typically, the structure of this type of vice requires the presence of a bearing base.

Features and types of carpentry vices

Carpenter's vices are used for processing wood parts. This type of work is specific, and therefore requires a special design of the tool itself, different from the design of a bench vice. Most often, carpenter's vices are made of solid wood, and parts are secured using wooden jaws for a vice. In this regard, they must be wider than a bench vice, and in addition, they require a significantly larger clamping area.

Carpenter's vices most often have one base, but with two guides. With their help, the movable sponge is held in place, which helps prevent distortions. In this case, the guides can be an integral part of the workbench or can be removed if necessary.

Interesting to know! Even manual models of a certain design make it possible to manipulate elongated workpieces. For this purpose, a special wide anvil is used with the ability to fasten the workpiece in a vertical position. They also produce models that are used for fastening round-shaped parts.

Carpenter's vices are also classified based on the technology used in the process of activating the screw. According to this feature, they can be manual or pneumatic. If the classification takes into account design features, then the vice is divided into rotary and non-rotary.

As mentioned above, carpentry models are used for processing wooden and plastic blanks. Therefore, wooden parts are mounted on the jaws, which helps to avoid clamping marks. When the device is mounted at the front, there is a chance to work vertically with fixed parts.

Design and type of fastening of the vice: price and quality

A metalworking machine can be designed to be mounted on a workbench or table. For this purpose, special bolts are used. In this case, an all-metal vice design is obtained. The photos clearly demonstrate this.

You can also choose the option of a stationary or rotary type, which will make it possible to process parts with the option of changing the angle. In this case, the width of the jaws will range from 45 to 200 mm with the possibility of the jaw moving 140 mm. The advantages of such equipment are the wear resistance of the jaws, as well as a durable anvil, lightness and small size of the product. If we are talking about a rotating model, it should be noted that it can be rotated 360 degrees. Don't forget about some disadvantages:

  • during operation, the jaws of the vice require constant alignment;
  • washers on the vice are distinguished by the presence of lock washers, which wear out quickly;
  • it becomes difficult to clamp long workpieces;
  • there is play in the device.

Bench vices are divided into parallel and table vices. In the first version, the jaw is displaced due to the rotation of the vice screw, which occurs parallel to the stationary base.

The cost of industrially produced vices with a complete set is quite high, so it is better to make them yourself, especially if you have minimal knowledge and skills, as well as necessary materials at hand.

Homemade vice: machine design and manual model

A machine vice is a more precise version of the device for fixing parts. It is either completely devoid of play, or its run-up is the smallest. The vice is simply installed on the workbench. They differ in that they have a rotating mechanism.

The machine version has its own subtypes:

  • stationary (with fixation perpendicular to the location of the vice);
  • sinus, where the part is installed at an angle;
  • multi-axis, on which the workpiece can rotate in different directions along the axis.

Machine-type vices provide strong fixation, which is extremely important when processing metal parts. They have a durable body and are coated with an anti-corrosion layer. The rigidity of the clamp ensures high precision work. At the same time, if the workpiece clamp is bent, marks will remain on it. For this purpose, you will need a foil gasket or you need to fix the part using exclusively the upper part of the jaws.

Useful advice! A carpenter's vice, in comparison with other types of equipment, allows for better processing of parts made of soft materials, while large products can be worked in the same plane.

The manual model is a portable vice of a compact shape that does not require stationary fixation on the base. They are designed for processing small workpieces and come in two types (based on design features):

  • with jaws, screw and handles;
  • A lever-type vice that resembles pliers with a locking mechanism.

These vices are used for precision work, as they have a minimum level of play. The tool is designed for working with profiles made of aluminum and metal tiles, and you can also clamp flat-shaped workpieces on them. Therefore, if you intend to process miniature parts, it is enough to purchase or make a hand vice with your own hands at home.

Vise for a drilling machine: an integral part of the device

The vice mounted in the drilling machine is not an additional part, but a necessary accessory for the installation. With their help, you can firmly clamp the part in relation to the machine chuck and perform the most accurate and even serial drilling operations.

When purchasing a vice for a drilling machine, you should immediately pay attention to the size of the jaws. Their width can vary in the range of 60-150 mm. Their depth and the indicator of maximum discrepancy are also important. Some models of drilling vices have prismatic jaws that allow you to fix round workpieces and parts.

A subtype of a vice for a drilling machine is a tool with an additional step that allows you to fix the part small size so that a significant part is located above the surface of the jaws of the drilling vice.

The main parameter is the distance between the grooves, which determines the possibility of mounting a certain vice on a drilling machine. You can find models that have small ears instead of long grooves. Special attention should be paid to such drilling vices.

The modern market offers a wide selection of equipment of this type. It is best to give preference to a model with three-sided installation. Such a vice can be easily installed not only on the edge of the lower level, but also on the other two. This feature makes them more flexible in their work. You can purchase a ready-made design, and it is also quite affordable to make a vice for a drilling machine with your own hands.

How to make a homemade vice for carpentry work

Due to the variety of spare parts that the modern market offers, as well as thanks to the Internet, where you can find a large number of drawings with dimensions, making a vice with your own hands is absolutely unproblematic. It is immediately worth noting that the price homemade instrument will be an order of magnitude lower than the cost of ready-made vices.

Useful advice! To make the equipment convenient and cope with the task, before making a vice, you need to select the dimensions in advance, consider the availability of tools and materials, and prepare the workpieces.

The first thing to consider when making a carpenter's vice is that the jaws should be made of soft wood, which will avoid damaging the soft parts.

To make work as convenient as possible, the vice is screwed to the workbench. Then a simple furniture nut is attached to the fixed half for subsequent screwing in the stud. The latter, in turn, will be responsible for the mobility of the mechanism. The next stage is fixing the washer on the movable jaw and attaching the knob to the handle. The sponge tips themselves can be made from simple plywood.

If you need to make a homemade vice for a drilling machine with your own hands, then you should mark the parts, and then cut out three identical beams. The bed is made from a thick board or three sheets of plywood. On two fixed bars, drill two vertical holes, on the third there is a hole for a pin, which acts as a clamping mechanism. Next, install the nut into the timber.

A small patch with four holes for fixation is welded to the end of the stud. Next, screw the pin to the fixed jaw, and its end to the movable one. The finished structure itself is mounted on a workbench.

Do-it-yourself bench vise at home: video, photo, diagram

A subtype of carpentry vice that can be easily made from wood is the Moxon vice, or bench vice, which allows you to fix large and dimensional boards, plywood and panels. At the same time, they do not require a large area in the workshop; they are made from wood. To make a wooden vice with your own hands you will need:

  • hairpins - 2 pieces;
  • nuts - 4 pieces;
  • boards - 3 pieces.

Sequence of work:

  1. The boards are cut to the required size.
  2. Two holes are drilled in the fixed and moving parts.
  3. On the stationary part, nuts are inserted into the prepared holes, which are pre-lubricated with glue on both sides.
  4. A knob is welded to the edge of the stud (for convenience) or a wooden handle is attached.
  5. You can make a stand for the stationary part of a wooden vice in the form of a step with your own hands.
  6. The finished product is attached to a workbench or to a special table. For fixation, you can use both bolts and self-tapping screws.

An important point in the manufacture of wooden vices is that the holes in the stationary part should be smaller than the nuts, which will prevent the nut from spinning idle in the hole.

Useful advice! Just like the carpenter's vice itself, you can make a workbench for it yourself. The table for the vice is made by hand in accordance with the required dimensions. In this case, the workpieces should protrude slightly beyond the support.

How to make a vice from metal with your own hands: materials and sequence of work

Bench and milling vices are designed for working with metal, so a more reliable and stronger material will be required here. We are talking about durable steel or cast iron. At the same time, like wooden ones, you can make them yourself. The easiest way is to make a vice from a channel with your own hands. To do this you will need the following set of tools:

  • welding machine;
  • electric drill;
  • grinder with a circle for cleaning;
  • a square for correctly determining angles;
  • drills of different sizes and diameters.

In addition, you will need the following materials and auxiliary tools for making a vice from a channel with your own hands:

  • drawings;
  • channel made of steel 6 mm thick;
  • metal sheet with a thickness of 6 mm;
  • corner size 70x70 or 50x50;
  • a pin with a diameter of 16 mm, used as a clamping screw;
  • bolts and nuts – 20 sets.

A pair of nuts into which the screw is screwed is not easy to make yourself; here it is best to use the services of a professional turner. The nut is welded to the channel as coaxially as possible. The ends of the channel should be covered using pieces of metal sheets; a hole must be made in the strip for the screw.

At the next stage, using a grinder, cut out two corners and a plate. The finished corners are fitted to the channel on both sides and covered with a piece of metal. Thus, a U-shaped structure is obtained, which is the basis of a hand-made vice from a channel.

To make the frame, you will need a sheet of metal 7-10 mm thick, in which four holes are drilled on each side, and also 6 holes are made on the U-shaped element. One nut is welded to the frame, and on the sides of it there are two metal stoppers. They also make their own jaws for a vice: they are cut out of steel. One part is welded immediately, and the second is attached to the moving part.

Do-it-yourself vice from a corner: step-by-step manufacturing instructions

You can make your own machine vice from metal corner. To do this, you will need the same tools as for working with the channel, and the following materials must be prepared:

  • metal corner 30x30;
  • threaded pin;
  • nuts for studs;
  • small bearing.

A sample drawing of a vice from a corner can be found on the Internet. It is easy to make your own product according to the required dimensions. First you should prepare two blanks by sawing a corner. Their size depends on the width of the drilling machine bed. Next, two jaws are made from thick metal using a grinder and markings are applied along which holes are drilled to fix them to the base.

Useful advice! You can give the vice an aesthetic appearance using paint. For this, simple metal enamel is used.

Then you need to make a clamp with your own hands. You will need to take a piece of corner with a drilled hole for the pin. It is better to weld the bearing immediately. On the side opposite the mount with the bearing, it is necessary to fix the same corner and make a hole for the shaft. On the other side, three nuts should be welded. For convenient rotation of the stud, a knob is attached to the base of the nut. Such a vice will cost much less. In addition, knowing their structure, you can independently repair the vice if necessary.

Experienced craftsmen know that drilling and holding parts at the same time is quite difficult. As a result, the work turns out to be inaccurate, which affects the quality of the product. A vice of the appropriate type will greatly help simplify the task. Using the recommendations given in the article, you can make them yourself. At the same time, such a vice will be practically no different from those purchased in a store, but will cost much less.

Using a drilling machine requires that you clearly fix the element being processed and it will not move until the drilling process is completely completed. Only after a person is satisfied with the result can the part be removed and used in other conditions.

To clamp parts in the desired position, a table vice for a drilling machine is used. It is difficult to overestimate the importance and influence that machine vices have on the entire work process, which is associated with the manufacture and boring of various parts.

This article will talk about machine models of vices, their varieties and features.

1 General information

The drilling machines themselves are rigid structures consisting of several basic elements. The base of the machine is always the bed on which the main frame is attached. The bed is equipped as table machine, and a floor sample.

However, if we consider the desktop type of equipment, then the frame acts as both a base and a substrate for future materials.

Floor-standing models use universal parts. Here the bed already functions as a base that holds the tabletop machine in one place. Well, the parts will be directly clamped by special discs.

Initially, machines are rarely equipped with a vice, since this increases their production costs. And the buyer does not always need a universal machine vice. Sometimes for small jobs it is enough basic configuration working unit. This applies to people who process soft materials.

For example, wood, plastic, non-ferrous metals of low density, etc. Here there is no great need to clamp the workpiece in a vice. In fact, you can even hold it in your hands.

Agree, a person who uses a table-top drilling machine to drill holes in boards for furniture has no need to buy expensive vices from the Enkor or Sturm companies.

After all, it is quite possible that they will not be useful to him at all in his work. And the cost of a table vice for an Enkor or Sturm drilling machine, although not so high, will still raise the cost bar. But everything changes if you need to work at full strength and with serious metals. In the same steel treatment Without a machine vice there is nothing to do at all.

Well, you won’t be holding the workpiece with your hands while the tabletop machine is drilling. This is prohibited by safety regulations, and is simply ineffective.

Human power is not enough to properly fix a part in the right place and position. If the part needs to be installed at a certain angle, then the situation only gets worse.

And it doesn’t matter whether you use a tabletop or floor-standing machine; in any case, you will simply need a fixed vice. In addition, there are additional clamping parts that partially perform the functions that a machine vice provides, only they are cheaper and easier to install.

1.1 Operating principle of vices and clamping mechanisms

The vice itself is a powerful clamping mechanism made of steel parts. Their design can vary significantly depending on the variety chosen.

For example, hand-made fixed vices have a more rigid design and are cheaper than all others, rotary models are more functional, and universal ones combine the most useful features from both those and other samples. But they usually cost the most.

There will be certain differences between the products of different companies. On modern market The most common vices are from Enkor and Sturm (for example, in the Sturm BD7037-999 model). It is worth understanding that the design and solutions in the Enkor vice will differ from the same solutions, but in Sturm products (for example, in the Sturm BD7037-999 model). However, the general design principles remain almost the same.

They consist of:

  • base strips;
  • two clamping parts;
  • screw for rotation with handle;
  • force transmitter;
  • additional elements.

The base plate is made of hard metal. It is the basis for the entire future design. It is on the bar that the clamps are mounted, a hole for the screw is drilled on it and force transmitters are thought out.

Clamps on bearings are installed on top of the bar. One of the clamps is connected to the screw, by rotating it it is possible to change its position. The screw can be an ordinary threaded rod (the kind used when assembling homemade vise models), or it can be a specially bored element with the ability to install transmission gears on it.

In this case, the clamp is also set in motion according to its own system. And it can vary depending on the parts used, as well as the purpose of the vice itself.

Thus, the simplest non-rotating models work due to the direct action of a screw on one of the clamps or jaws, as it is popularly called. When rotating, the screw passes through a thread that is cut in the body, and its outer part is directly connected to the jaw. Thus, tightening the screw clockwise leads to its displacement closer to the counter clamp, and unscrewing, on the contrary, pulls the structure back.

Rotary models, as a rule, are much more complex in design, so here screw guide rods can be equipped with the simplest rectangular-type gears made of cone-shaped gears.

However, rotary samples do not necessarily have to be equipped complex mechanisms, as well as non-rotary ones, are not always limited to just one screw gear that is installed on the thread.

The type of manufacturer and his decisions will also have a big impact here. For example, in the line of vices from Enkor or Sturm there are rotary machine models, both with complex force transmission algorithms and with simpler design options.

And optional complex design is a big plus. For example, the same Sturm BD7037-999 vice is assembled using the simplest technology, and in its popularity it can compete with many more advanced products from the company Enkor, etc.

1.2 Pressure bars

Don’t forget about the use of clamping bars. These products, although they have an extremely simple design, are still quite highly effective. Pressure bar – this is a small element machined from metal with a hole for one or more fasteners.

The plank can be curved to one side. When mounting it on a table, the bar must be attached to the base of the machine, having previously been fixed above the working element. For example, steel plate, tube, etc.

Once fixed, it will hold the part securely and allow you to process it as needed. The slats can be either regular plates or advanced ones. They can be shaped like a horseshoe, curved at a right angle, T-clamp, cross, etc.

The most interesting rotary samples (yes, there are such things) are even equipped with spring mechanisms in order to be able to more effectively interact with the workpiece during drilling.

However, all these devices will still be inferior in efficiency to standard vices. However, if you use desktop version If the machine is of low power, then the clamping bars in this case will be more than enough.

2 Types and differences

Machine vices are divided into several main types. Having understood them, it will be much easier for you to navigate all the diversity that is presented on the market.

So, machine vices are divided into:

  • fixed;
  • rotary.

Each of these varieties has its own characteristics and even scope of application. Moreover, different companies have different attitudes towards the production of certain products.

For example, the Enkor company prefers to manufacture mainly rotary complex vices, which are used in industry and mechanical engineering.

2.1 Fixed vice

These machine vices are also called stationary. Almost their entire design has already been described above. The sample consists of a rigid base on which two clamps or jaws are attached. One of the clamps is operated by a screw mechanism with a handle. When it rotates, the sponge moves to one side.

If the machine vice has an advanced structure, then the jaw can be rotated in one of the directions to change the area of influence on the work element.

For example, one side of the jaw may be flat to securely hold plates and elements with flat sides, and the second will be specially machined for round products such as pipes. It is quite obvious that The easiest way is to make a homemade universal vice for a drilling machine, made by yourself. Although, when working with your own hands, you will have to work a lot, since this is not an easy task.

The Sturm BD7037-999 vice is the most popular example of the simplest clamping mechanisms.

Due to their low cost, high efficiency and simple design, they can compete with the most popular models from Encor and other well-known manufacturers of similar equipment.

2.2 Rotary vice

Rotary vices differ from non-rotary ones in that they allow you to manipulate the object being fixed in several directions. For example, a standard table saw is equipped with only a bed with bolt-on mountings.

These fasteners are specially designed so that you can quickly and independently install fastening bars or a vice on a tabletop machine.

However, the non-rotating type of vice does not allow us to rotate it as we want. That is, for example, if you need to process a rectangular part in one place and then in another, then at best the vice will have to be opened and compressed again.

As you yourself understand, such actions do not contribute to increasing the efficiency of work in production. Rotary units give us a completely different situation. The simplest rotary vice can be rotated around its axis. It's quite convenient.

However, there are also more advanced models. This is a longitudinally rotary vice that allow not only to rotate the workpiece, but also shift it a couple of centimeters from the central axis.

Well, the most effective, as well as the most expensive, option is rotary models that can rotate in three planes. They are also called globe.

Such mechanisms, in addition to the functions described above, also allow you to tilt the part at your discretion. That is, they make it possible to manipulate its position in three-dimensional space.

2.3 Do-it-yourself homemade vice for a drilling machine (video)

The vice used for equipment performs a very important function. They provide reliable fixation of the part, which is necessary for drilling to be performed with maximum accuracy. The modern market offers a wide variety of models of vices for drilling machines. Each of these models has its own design features and areas of application.

Purpose and use of a vice for a drilling machine

Drilling machines, which can be either floor or tabletop, are designed to form holes in parts made from different materials. As mentioned above, a vice for drilling machines allows you to perform such a technological operation with maximum accuracy and safety.

Not all models of drilling equipment have a vice in their basic configuration. The latter, although slightly, increase the cost of the machine. The absence of such a device as a drilling vice in the basic configuration of the equipment is also explained by the fact that when working with workpieces made of soft materials (wood, plastic, etc.), they may not be required. When drilling holes in such materials, very small cutting forces are created, and it is not difficult to hold the workpiece with your own hands.

You definitely cannot do without a vice if holes are drilled on a machine in parts that are made of metal. In such cases, holding the workpiece with your own hands is not only difficult and ineffective, but also unsafe.

Machine vices are especially indispensable in cases where the part must be positioned at a certain angle to perform drilling. Of course, instead of a vice for a drilling machine, you can use simple clamping fixtures, which is not difficult to make with your own hands. However, if you are interested in the reliability of fixing the workpiece, the safety of work on the machine and the high accuracy of the technological operations performed, it is better to purchase serial models. In most cases, a homemade vice for a drilling machine will cope with such tasks.

Design and principle of operation of clamping devices

Since machine vices are necessary to securely hold the workpiece during processing, they are made of durable steel elements. Depending on the type and purpose of the machine vice, their design can vary significantly.

The most inexpensive and least functional are the fixed-type vices, but these models have the most rigid design. By the way, homemade vices for a drilling machine are most often non-rotating.

The mid-price category includes rotary models, the functionality of which allows drilling operations to be performed more efficiently. The advantages of vices of the first and second types are combined in universal devices for a drilling machine, which, naturally, makes the cost of such devices quite high.

Even vices of the same type, but manufactured by different companies, may have certain design differences. This is explained by the fact that each manufacturer tries to provide their products with additional options, make it more reliable and convenient to use.

Whatever functionality the machine vice has, the basis of its design is made up of mandatory elements, which include:

  • strips that act as the base of the vice;
  • two jaws that provide clamping of the workpiece;
  • a screw with a handle, which ensures the movement of the movable clamping jaw;
  • plates that serve as working elements of the clamping jaws;
  • a number of additional details.

The bar, which acts as a base, is the supporting element on which all other parts of the vice are fixed. It is on the bar, which is made of hard and wear-resistant metal, that a hole for the screw is drilled and the movable and fixed jaws are mounted. To ensure precise movement, there is a rectangular shank on the bottom of the movable jaw, which is inserted into a cutout made on the fixed jaw.

The screw responsible for moving the movable jaw is connected to it, which is ensured by a special locking ring. Rotating in the threaded hole of the base plate, the screw moves the movable jaw, thereby ensuring clamping of the workpiece processed on the drilling machine. To understand how a vice works, you can watch the corresponding video.

Both serial models and homemade vices for a drilling machine can be made according to various schemes the impact of the screw on the movable jaw. In the simplest models of a vice, which are easy to make with your own hands, the screw is directly connected to a movable jaw, which it either pulls (unclamps the jaws) or pushes (compresses the jaws), which depends on the direction of its rotation. In more complex models, which may include both fixed and rotary vices, rotation of the screw is transmitted through gear drives, which makes the work of the drilling machine operator easier. Thanks to the gear drives, very little force is required to compress or unclench the jaws of the vice.

It should be borne in mind that the presence of a gear mechanism is not at all a criterion that should be emphasized when choosing clamping fixtures for a drilling machine. Many famous manufacturers, whose products are popular with specialists all over the world, produce devices whose operating principle is implemented according to a standard scheme, which does not make them less effective or inconvenient to use.

Important structural elements of any type of vice, which experience significant loads during operation and ensure reliable fixation of the workpiece, are pressure plates, or strips. Such elements, made from durable metal, are attached to the working surfaces of the clamping jaws using screw connections.

In the standard version, the clamping bars have a flat working surface, on which a cross notch is applied. More specialized types of planks are also used, which are necessary for processing workpieces of a certain shape. The working surfaces of such planks can be made in various forms(angular, concave, etc.). In some modern models The clamping bars of a vice can be spring-loaded. This design makes it possible to slightly increase the convenience of fixing parts in the clamping fixture of a drilling machine.

Types of machine vices

All vices used to equip drilling machines can be divided into two main types:

  • fixed;
  • rotary.

The type of vice is selected depending on what technological problems need to be solved with their help.

Fixed vice

This type of vice is often called stationary. They have the simplest design, so they are often made by hand. The principle of operation of such a device, fixed on the working table of a drilling machine in one position, is described above.

Using non-rotating vice models, only one hole can be made in the part, after which it is necessary to unclench the jaws of the device and rearrange the part (or move the vice itself along the surface of the workbench).

This type of vice is characterized by increased structural rigidity, but requires more time to perform auxiliary technological operations when compared with rotary models. The advantage of such a vice for a drilling machine is that they are affordable.

Rotary vice

A rotary vise is a kind of coordinate device for a drilling machine. They allow you to change its spatial position during processing without releasing the workpiece. Devices of this type appeared on the market at a time when there was a need to make efficient and reliable clamping devices for processing workpieces in mass production.

Thanks to the presence of a special rotating platform, the jaws with the part fixed in them can rotate 360 degrees. Having drilled in one place, such a platform can be easily rotated to the required angle without loosening the part, and drill a hole in another place.

More advanced models of rotary vices, due to the presence of cross guides on their base, allow not only to rotate the clamping jaws to the required angle, but also to move them in a horizontal plane along two axes. Making such a device with your own hands is much more difficult than a fixed vice, but it is possible if you wish. Such a device for a drilling machine can significantly increase the productivity of technological operations, which is especially important for mass production.
