The history of the bed. History of the crib Old Russian name for bed, bed

Let's continue talking about dream bedrooms. We already know how to draw a bedroom plan and what layout options there are, we know how to place a bed correctly and how much space is needed for passage in the room.

And today we’ll talk in detail only about beds: what they are, what materials they are made from, what parts they consist of, and why the size of the mattress is important when choosing the bed of your dreams.

The bed, after the table, is probably the most important piece of furniture in the house for me. In my life I’ve “slept” on sofas, so when the opportunity arose to rest exclusively in bed, I didn’t doubt for a second that it would be so, period!

Big dream bed with the most the best mattress in the world, covered beautiful bedspread– the dream of each of us!

Only once did I get caught life path customers who wanted to put a sofa in a separate bedroom... Imagine! How much strength did it take me to persuade them not to do this... “Dear mom” - but then they said thank you /

So let's get back to the beds!

Bed(from Greek κρεβάτι [krevati]) - furniture product, intended for sleeping when a person is lying down. The bed is usually located in the bedroom, where it forms the basis of this functional area of the home. Wikipedia.

What are they? DIFFERENT and divide them according to the following criteria:

Firstly, by functionality the beds are all divided specially and for individual use. We are not interested in special ones now (for example, for hospitals) - we are only talking about household use, those for dream houses :).

sketch by Oxana Panteleeva

Secondly, according to material manufacturing: wood, metal, plastic, composite materials, lsp, mdf, etc...

And by purpose : for an adult or child, for an elderly person, for people with disabilities.

There are also beds for pets, but we won’t consider them now :)))

What does the bed consist of?

The bed consists of a headboard, footboard, side frame, base and legs.

Tsarga - connecting parts of the bed, which are attached to each other, to the head of the bed, to the foot of the bed. They are the basis for the bottom of the bed on which the mattress is placed. They are also called sidewalls.

Modern beds, regardless of the design and material of manufacture, are all made according to the same principle, they all have the same constituent elements... The only part of the bed that is more and more often “missed” from general design- this is the footboard.

In “soft” beds, almost all manufacturers today do not have a footboard.

It is very rare, but there are beds with a missing headboard - but do not confuse the bed as a piece of furniture and the base for the mattress!

The base (often orthopedic) is a separate component of the bed, sometimes in the form of just a lattice, sometimes in the form of a whole structure on legs. Typically, the base is inserted inside the bed structure. Although today you can find a base that stands instead of a bed - I had this for a long time - first the base appeared, then the bed :).

Which material to choose as the best for a bed is probably up to you to decide. Because it's all very individual. The material determines the dimensions of the bed and its cost.

It is clear that a bed made of natural mahogany with carvings will cost many times more than a bed made of chipboard.

We just remember that:

  • The BIGGEST in size will be the soft bed. Since thick massive soft headboards can be 10 cm or 20 cm, and they will also be added soft upholstery sidewalls;
  • the most modest in size will be the forged bed;
  • but a wooden bed can be either large or modest;
  • a bed with a footboard will always take up more space than without it;
  • the shape of the headboard also affects the dimensions of the bed; fancy curved headboards can add a lot of centimeters to the overall dimensions.

Single beds are still in use today in great demand, since their dimensions allow you to place a bed in the smallest spaces. It is believed that the minimum required width sleeping place is 700 mm. This value is the sum of the minimum width SLEEPING the space occupied by a person is 600 mm and plus another 100 mm for comfort :)

For whom to choose: for a child - in a nursery or teenage room, for a guest room, rarely for an office.

One and a half The beds are something between a single and a double. The width of a sleeping place in our realities ranges from 100 to 120 cm. Someone will really say that 140 is one and a half - we bet :). Such a bed is perfect for a comfortable sleep for one person, but two people can “fit in” quite well if they really want to, especially when there is no choice :))).

For whom to choose: for a bedroom, for a children's room, for a room for the elderly, for people with increased body weight, for people with disabilities.

Double the beds are the most comfortable. Their width varies from 1400 to 2000 mm.

For whom to choose: for the bedroom of a married couple.

Now let's move on to the size range of beds. Or rather, to the SIZE RANGE OF MATTRESSES, since it is MATTRESS SIZE is decisive when choosing a bed.

Everyone probably knows that there are two size systems: metric (meters, centimeters) and English (feet, inches).

Let's try to look at the main differences:

As you can see, there are still significant differences between the European size range and the American one. Therefore, when ordering a bed from the USA, be careful so that Californian happiness fits in your bedroom :)!

In Russia, the size range coincides with the European one, with the exception that we have single beds on sale in 70 cm and 80 cm wide beds.

Since today purchasing a bed abroad is not something surprising, I think my illustrations will help you when choosing the bed of your dreams.

Now let's talk about the height of the bed, or rather the height of the base of the bed together with the mattress; we are not interested in the height of the headboard now :).

The average comfortable bed height is 45-50 cm. I would like to note right away that this is the height of the base WITH the mattress!

Those. if we choose a mattress with a height of 20 cm, the conditional height of the base of the bed will be approximately 25-35 cm.

American beds are all unusually HIGH for us - we need to remember and be aware of this. Average height American bed – 63-65 cm.

Antique beds – have height 90 -100 cm! so if you love antiques, try to be attentive :))) Why is it so important to know the comfortable height of the bed for yourself.

Firstly, appearance Beds are very different between low modern and high American traditional beds.
All other furniture in the room must be selected to match the chosen bed - one hundred percent.

The height of the bed is the comfort of its use. Today, many people love low beds, and often choose them precisely because of their design and beauty...

But older people often ask to put the bed higher - since it is much more comfortable for them to sit down or get up from such a bed!

For children, on the contrary, you need to choose low beds, so that if the baby falls, he cannot seriously harm himself. But we’ll talk about children’s separately and in detail...

Separately, we must remember that beds for people with disabilities should be special and as comfortable as possible for use!

The height of the mattress, its hardness, the material of manufacture - you choose exclusively yourself! This is very, very individual! The only thing I can say here is that if you and your husband have a very big difference in weight - then give preference to buying two different mattresses, and “connect” them on top with a mattress pad - tested for personal experience, and thanked the German mattress manufacturer a thousand times, who many years ago told me to do just that!

Well, we talked about beds... We learned about the sizes of sleeping places, how they differ in different countries, learned that there are very high and very low beds, and... probably... chose the bed of your dreams!

Etymology

According to one version, the word “bed” comes from the word “roof”. According to Vasmer, this word comes from Ancient Greek κράββατος, Middle Greek κραββάτι(ο)ν, Modern Greek κρεββάτι. In modern Greek - κρεβάτι, pronounced [krevati].

Bed design

The bed usually has four legs (except for specific models), with the help of which its frame is raised above the floor, backrests (front and back) and a mattress. The frame, supports and headboards of the bed can be made of metal, wood and, less commonly, other materials.

This design of the bed allows you to temporarily place or store things under it (for example, a suitcase with things) and hang things on the back.

More complex design the bed includes vertical posts and even in some cases the roof. This addition, combined with the curtains covering it, separates the space of the room from the space where the bed itself is located. Additional function Such a compartment may provide protection from insects.

History of the bed

The bed has been known since Ancient Egypt. Before the widespread use of beds, people slept on chests, benches, and sheets.

In ancient times, beds were arranged under a roof, a roof. The roof was installed on four pillars, which were called plows. Two timbers were inserted into the plow. Bridge planks were installed on the beams. The beams and bridge boards made up the frame, which was called the frame. The machine was fastened with iron ties. Large boards were installed in the plows - dungeons, that is, headboards at the head and feet. Four bars with domes were installed on the tops of the plows; on these bars it was arranged sky, or ceiling (ceiling). The sky was made of stone. Curtains descended from the tops of the beams; also made of damask with fringe. At the feet and heads of the bed the curtains were called dungeons.

The beds were decorated with carvings, the fabrics of the sky and dungeons were embroidered, decorated with tassels and lace. Stands, blocks, and steps were placed next to the bed, which were called bed stocks, or access blocks.

In 1662, Alexey Mikhailovich sent the Persian Shah a bed worth 2,800 rubles as a gift. This was probably the most expensive bed in the 17th century, the boyar’s annual income did not exceed 700 rubles per year. This bed was purchased in 1659 from the German Ivan Fansweden.

Today the story will be about the most desired item of a tired person - a bed. Everything about it is convenient and pleasant. Mattress, soft pillow, warm blanket. Lie down and relax for yourself! Just try sleeping on the ground - it’s hard, damp, all sorts of bugs are crawling. Even our ancestors did not lie down on the ground, but for convenience they lined their beds with pine branches or animal skins. The very first bed that archaeologists found looked like a trough, and it served as a bed for several people at once. A separate bed was a great luxury and privilege of the ruler.

The predecessors of the bed were mounds of clay or earth (among some African tribes, wooden mounds). And among the natives of New Guinea and tribes South America His favorite bed was a hammock woven from wood fibers. Egyptian pharaohs rested on richly decorated beds with wooden stands under the head. And the Japanese still sleep on a rotating reed cylinder instead of a pillow.

Among the ancient Greeks, the role of a bed was performed by couches, similar to a modern sofa. One could say that their whole life was spent on them: feasts, conversations, reading, concluding business deals. The bed of the ancient Romans was long-legged: to climb onto it, a ladder was required. At that time, people already knew what a mattress and pillow were, and stuffed them with wool, grass, feathers, and occasionally down.

Around the 4th century BC, bed making became an independent craft. What kind of things were beds made of? They were both wooden and bronze, decorated with carvings, bone, gold and silver. And so that it would not be cold in the bed at night, they attached a roof to it and hung thick blankets on all sides. In ancient times, the Chinese even came up with a bed with a heating system.

In medieval Europe, beds, according to ancient tradition, were very large, up to four meters wide. And if a dear friend was late and stayed overnight, he went to bed with the owners in this hefty bed.

For a long time, it was fashionable in the homes of rich people to arrange canopies - canopies over the bed - from tens of meters of luxurious fabric. Canopies, like everything else, had their own fashion. But there is an assumption that these canopies served not so much for beauty, but to prevent bedbugs and cockroaches from falling from the ceiling on the owner at night.

Later, during the Renaissance, the bed becomes an office. The ministers talked on important topics with the ambassadors, who were sitting right there in the bed. There were even state beds on which no one ever slept.

In 1715, the Paris Academy of Sciences introduced the picture bed. During the day it hung on the wall, and at night you could sleep on it. But the funniest bed appeared in 1789. Imagine you are sitting at desk, you are studying, and suddenly the table turns... into a comfortable bed.

Looking at the beds of Peter the Great’s times, I can’t even believe that adults slept in them, tall people. The beds seem somehow short, childish. But the fact is that they slept in a half-sitting position. It was allegedly believed that blood rushing to the head while lying down had a very bad effect on health.

And one foundry worker came up with a bed made of copper pipes. This happened in 1831 - and since then the world began to sleep on metal bed. Then they appeared in the houses soft sofas and moody couches.

But the Russian people did not pay attention to all sorts of European fashions and slept, as before, on sheets, on warm beds along the stove, on chests and wide benches. Only old people slept on the stove itself. Only in mid-19th century, the bed was finally recognized by merchants, landowners, and wealthy peasants. These beauties with feather beds, a mountain of pillows, and quilts appeared in every self-respecting home. Not a bed, but a sight for sore eyes!

They say that a hundred years ago the highest were German beds filled with feather beds. It was impossible to climb them without a ladder. The Princess and the Pea probably slept on such a bed.

Bed of the Dying (Exalted)

Primitive versions of the bed appeared in ancient times. However, it should be noted that many years passed before they began to compare favorably with the heaps of straw on which our ancestors mostly slept.

It is believed that the first beds were created in Ancient Egypt. They had rather bizarre shapes, reminiscent of animal bodies. The bed itself consisted of wooden frame with a mesh stretched over it. The legs were made in the form of animal paws. The first Egyptian beds were the exclusive domain of the pharaohs. Servants were given a place on the floor.

IN Ancient Greece Wealthy people owned two types of beds - crabbation and kline. Krabattion (it is believed that the word “bed” came from this name) was intended for sleeping, and kline for dining.

IN Ancient Rome the nobility had at least three types of beds - for sleeping (lectus), dining and studying. The lectus frame, on which the mesh was stretched, was made of wood. A backrest was installed at the head. The bed was covered with mattresses and pillows stuffed with goose feathers.

In the Middle Ages, solid wooden beds, made from hard rocks. Instead of mattresses, skins or feather beds were used. In the XII – XV centuries. beds began to be made lighter. Then, for the first time, canopies and canopies saw the light, which rather served not an aesthetic function, but a practical one - they protected a sleeping person from drafts and insects falling from the ceiling, which even filled the homes of aristocrats and the rich. The servants continued to sleep on the floor.

In the XVII - XVIII centuries. the beds have been transformed. They increased in size and became a real work of art. Painting, carving, decorations precious stones and mirrors - furniture craftsmen didn't skimp on ideas. The beds were covered with straw mattresses, a feather bed and two sheets. Featherbeds of varying quality and price were used as blankets. The beds were the real pride of the owner.

In the 17th century the first signs of socialization of cultural sleep appeared. Beds began to penetrate middle-class families. As a rule, in such families there was one wide bed, on which not only relatives, but also guests rested together.

In the 18th century excessive pretentiousness began to give way to straight lines and simple forms. Canopies begin to become a thing of the past, and the bedroom becomes a personal space into which strangers were not allowed.

The first “social” beds appeared only in the 19th century. Public facilities such as hospitals, infirmaries, and hotels began to be equipped with mesh spring structures. Mesh and pipes are the main element of beds, which were successfully used until the mid-twentieth century.

Today there is no shortage of beds. Made in a variety of styles and from various materials, they are accessible to everyone and fit perfectly into any interior. On at the moment The pinnacle of evolution is the Letta, which, having absorbed the best fruits of technological progress, allows its future owners to escape standard models and choose a frame, headboard and legs from several proposed options. This approach makes Letta beds individual and very comfortable.
