DIY pear ottoman. Creating a footbag (chair bag-soccer ball)

A beanbag chair is a comfortable frameless furniture that is suitable not only for adults, but also for children. The product will perfectly decorate the interior of a child's room, bedroom or living room. The chair is comfortable due to its compactness and low weight. If desired, it can be moved to another room, put in a closet or transported in the trunk passenger car. You can do it yourself. Use this tutorial to make your own bean bag chair.

These frameless chairs have the main advantage - the absence of a rigid frame. IN classic version they are pear or teardrop shaped. To select a design, you can view the photo. As a base, you can use a ball or a plain fabric of bright color.

The furniture is presented in a bag with bulk and soft filler. It seems to imitate liquid. An effect appears similar to that when there is water in the inner case.

The furniture takes on the shape of the body of a sitting person, evenly taking on his weight. After a couple of minutes, you will feel how your muscles and body relax, and the load is removed from your lower back. An additional warming effect is provided by the low thermal conductivity of the filler.

Among the main advantages of a bean bag chair are the following:

  • Thanks to the use of loose filler, the level of comfort increases;
  • Frameless furniture is suitable for children, as it does not have sharp corners and is environmentally friendly;
  • Soft chairs are very practical, as they can be moved without any problems while cleaning the floors;
  • The child seat fits perfectly into the interior when making the right choice models;
  • To maintain order, just wash the removable cover.

If you have planned renovation work indoors or a complete change in design, do not throw away the chair you made. It is enough to add filler to it and sew a new cover so that it fits the new interior design.

Making a chair (MK)

How to sew a bean bag chair with your own hands without mistakes? Understand the design of the product. It includes two elements - outer and inner covers. Styrofoam balls or polystyrene are poured into the inner case. The material used is ordinary calico or lining material. The bag with the filling should have a small zipper. This will allow you to replace the balls when the previous ones become wrinkled from frequent use.

A zipper and a small handle are attached to the outer cover to make it convenient to carry the chair around the house. When creating a bean bag chair with your own hands according to the master class, keep in mind that you need to choose a material that is dense and wear-resistant. Among them you can choose raincoat fabric, leather substitute, denim or curtain fabric.

The following materials are used for work:

  • filler in the amount of 300 l;
  • textiles for the inner cover in the amount of 3 m;
  • two zippers, the length of which is 40 and 100 cm;
  • material for the outer cover is about 3 m.

Before making a bean bag chair with your own hands, the patterns are transferred to graph paper. You can do without this if you can make a pattern on the fabric using soap.

Filler

Typically, foam balls or polystyrene foam granules are used. This is the simplest and most hygienic material. The balls do not absorb sweat, odors and dirt. This is ideal if you plan to use frameless furniture in the dining room, kitchen, showroom or cafe. As for expanded polystyrene, insects do not grow in it and it is non-hygroscopic. An ottoman made from this material is easy to sew and is the most affordable.

Are you thinking about how to sew a pear chair using natural materials? When choosing an organic filler, furniture can be used in a room with low humidity. Otherwise, the bags will begin to mold after stitching. The following natural fillers can be used:

  • horsehair;
  • wood shavings;
  • down, feathers or wool;
  • millet, rice or peas;
  • seeds, buckwheat husks or grass.

If you plan to sew a bean bag chair using a pattern from sawdust, consider their quality. As you fill the pear with your own hands, inspect the shavings. All chips must be removed from it, otherwise there is a possibility of getting a splinter or scratches. The easiest way is to use cedar shavings. Its smell is pleasant, but repels insects. This filler also has pronounced healing properties.

Important! A DIY pear chair made from fluff can provoke an allergic reaction. Do not use it for a child's room or plan to make it for the room of someone with allergies.

Stages of work

A suitable model of a frameless chair can be found in numerous photos. Then use the easiest method available to stitch the product. If you have the materials, you can quickly get the job done. The following applies step by step instructions:

1. Pattern. Before you start creating a frameless chair with your own hands, make a pattern. Find suitable option, transfer it onto the fabric with maximum precision. Don't forget to mark the allowances you will need for the seams. Carry the bean bag chair pattern, saving space. This will allow you to waste less fabric. At least 1.5 cm will be left on the seams so that they do not unravel due to the strong tension of the material. For each case you will need 6 wedges. One hexagon or circle will be required for the bottom and top of the product for each case.

2. Formation of the outer cover. After creating your DIY bean bag chair pattern, move on to stitching. Place the two wedges together with right sides facing in. Sew 15 cm from the bottom and top to leave room for sewing a 100 cm zipper. We baste the zipper and sew it with a machine. Another wedge is added to one side and the seam is ironed. Sew other parts in the same way. After this, the base with the bottom is sewn.

3. Formation of the inner cover. We sew this cover in the same way. But the exception is the zipper, the length of which is 40 cm. Sew 45 cm from the bottom and top.

4. Padding. Let's move on to the very last stage. If you are using artificial material, stuff your bag while wearing a respirator mask. Fill the case 2/3 full. This makes the chair softer.

So, using this step-by-step plan, you will get the job done in no time. Just buy what you need, make a simpler pattern and sew the parts. The resulting product must match the design of the room in which it is planned to be used.

Materials and tools for work

The amount of fabric and filler depends on the size of the bean bag. We will proceed from the average size of a chair for an adult. In this case we will need:

  1. Graph paper for patterns (patterns).
  2. Fabric for the inner cover - 3.5 linear meters with a width of 150 cm. It is best to take calico, teak, satin white. Other colors and designs will show through the second case.
  3. The fabric for the removable cover is 3.6 m with a width of 150 cm. The proportions are slightly larger so that the bag of granules fits into the outer pillowcase without problems. The choice of fabric must be taken seriously. The material must be durable, high quality, pleasant to the touch. The color of the outer cover is selected so that the chair does not stand out from the general style situation. Those who immediately want to sew a pear chair with their own hands and several removable pillowcases for it do the right thing. Then the bean-bag becomes an interesting and new element of room design every time.
  4. Two zippers for covers: for the inner bag 40 cm long, for the outer bag 60 cm long.
  5. Foamed foam (crumb fraction 3-5 mm) – 0.25 cubic meters. You can order it online or at your nearest construction center. They sell the filler in bags of at least half a cube. Delivery will have to be ordered, because... With such luggage you will not be allowed on any tram.
  6. Sewing machine.
  7. Ruler, pencil, sharpened piece of chalk or soap (draw on fabric).

Preparing the pattern

Our bean bag will consist of six identical wedges, a top and a base. Using the diagram presented, draw a pattern for one wedge on graph paper. It is better to immediately make full-size patterns, without wasting time on calculating the sides in millimeters and subsequent drawing out the details in an enlarged form. Essentially, we are sewing a simple bag. The height of the wedge at the extreme points should be 120 cm, width - 45 cm. The top of the chair is a hexagon 21 cm high and 18.2 cm wide.

Patterns for a pear chair

The top pattern is done like this. Fold a sheet of graph paper in half and mark half of the design on one side. After checking the dimensions again, cut out the pattern without unfolding the sheet. The result is a symmetrical hexagon.

The drawing shows two parts of the base. In fact, there are four of them (two more similar parts are made in a mirror ratio to the first two to create an oval bottom). The part is deliberately divided into two semicircles and two rounded stripes. If you cut them from leftovers, the savings in material will be obvious.

Cutting fabric

We spread the material for the inner cover on the floor, wrong side up. By applying patterns to it, we calculate the most best option cutting to get the most out of the fabric. Now you can translate drawings. If one person is working, the wedge pattern will need to be pinned to the material six times in turn. Each time, the pattern is outlined with a margin of 1 cm on all sides and the finished part is cut out.

Economical use of fabric for pear chairs

If two people do the cutting, then everything is much simpler. One holds the stencil tightly, the other traces it. It turns out much faster. The bottom and top of the bag are cut out in the same way. Having cut the inner cover, we repeat the same operations with the fabric for the outer bag.

Sewing covers

Despite the apparent complexity, in fact there is nothing easier than making a pear chair with your own hands. Let's look at the order of stitching the parts.

Step 1. Sew the cut pieces of the inner cover together, starting from the base. We baste the bottom parts to each other, achieving complete symmetry. We sew the sewn seams on a machine and smooth them with an iron.

Step 2. Connect all six wedges together, with the right sides facing inward. Sew the side seams, stepping back from the edge the same extra centimeter that you grabbed when tracing the stencil (allowance). Iron all seam allowances to one side. Don't do the last seam that turns the strip of connected wedges into a bag yet. Turn the cover over and stitch all the seams again according to front side, capturing the ironed allowances. Double seam provides additional strength to the product. Now we fold the outer wedges and sew 40 cm at the top and bottom. Turn the workpiece over to the right side. Our wedge height is 120 cm. Thus, another 40 cm remains for the zipper. We sew in the lock using a special foot. It turns out to be a kind of pipe with lightning, tapering towards the top.

Step 3. Turn the semi-finished product inside out again (sewing of parts always occurs from the inside out, excluding fittings and trim). We take the cut hexagonal top and baste it to the top of our pipe, connecting the vertices of the hexagon to the side seams. Do not fasten the zipper so that you can always stick your hand inside the bag and, while sewing, pull something, adjust it, etc. Attaching the top. All basting threads must be pulled out after finishing stitching.

Step 4. We attach the base to the bottom of the cover, aligning it with the wedges as accurately as possible. We stitch it clean. Turn the finished inner cover over to the right side. We sew the parts of the outer bag in exactly the same way. Having opened the zipper, insert the inner cover into it. The question of how to make a pear chair is almost resolved.

Step 5. Now take plastic bottle and cut off both ends. This results in a wide tube. We cut off a corner of the bag with granulated polystyrene and glue our tube (with tape) instead. We lower its other end into the inner case (of course, after opening the zipper on it first). Sprinkle in the granules. We close the zippers on the covers.

Manufacturing

Sew the outer cover

1. Cut out 6 side parts from black fabric and double-thread fabric. They will serve as our inner and outer cover. The side parts should be pear shaped. They are larger at the bottom and smaller at the top.

2. Cut out the bottom from the same fabrics. The bottom should be larger than our lid.

3. Cut out the lid from the same materials. In order for our parts to fit together, we need to make it hexagonal in shape.

P.s. The edges of the hexagon should be equal to the top and base of the pear.

4. Cut out the tummy for our penguin from white fabric. And we sew it with black fabric.

6. Then we sew the side parts and the tummy to our zipper.

7. Cut out 4 paws from orange fabric and sew them together.

8. Cut out the eyes. To do this, take a white cloth and cut out an irregularly shaped figure eight from it, and then two small, black circles. They also need to be connected.

9. Cut out the nose, two triangular areas. We also sew the two parts together. We sew the nose to our tummy, and sew the eyes on top of the nose.

10. We also cut out the wings from fabric, 4 triangular areas, and sew them to our body.

P.s. Before sewing the orange fabric and wings, you need to fill them with cotton wool or polystyrene foam.

After all the steps, we should have an outer cover like this.

Sew the inner cover

It needs to be sewn so that our small polystyrene foam balls do not fall apart.

11. It is sewn in exactly the same way as the outer cover. In addition to attaching the bottom.

12. We will make the bottom with Velcro to fill the cover. Cut the bottom into two parts, the first part should be less than the second. We attach our Velcro to both parts, overlapping the parts on top of each other.

Today we’re talking about how to sew a bean bag chair with your own hands. A bean bag chair comes in different shapes, but most often it is a pear chair or a ball chair; they don’t compete in terms of comfort, it’s just a matter of your preference, bean bag chair patterns different forms, as well as a bean bag chair for children in this post. What a bean bag chair looks like in an apartment interior photo.

Advantages of a bean bag chair

A bean bag chair belongs to frameless furniture, it is comfortable, and it is pleasant for adults and children to relax in it.

One of the advantages of a bean bag chair is that it is mobile; it can be easily moved from room to room, placed in any part of the room, and even taken outside, to the garden, to relax in the shade of trees.

The bean bag chair is filled with polystyrene foam balls, so it is very comfortable to sit in such a chair, because... the chair takes on the natural curves of the body and the spine relaxes, because the load is removed from him, it’s still warm to sit in such a chair, and this is what you especially want in the evening - relaxation and warmth.

The bean bag chair is safe for children, because... there are no hard or protruding parts.

The bean bag chair is easy to keep clean because... it consists of two covers, the inner one with filling, and the outer cover can be removed and machine washed.

Beanbag in the interior

Some difficulty lies in the fact that a bean bag chair does not fit into every interior; the only room in which a bean bag chair will look, in almost every home, in its place is a children's room. I see a way out of this situation in the following way: the bean bag chair needs to be “settled” in the children’s room, and since it can be easily moved, use it wherever you want, and then return it to the children’s room. So that the bean bag chair does not seem like something foreign in the room, sew it from a fabric that harmonizes with the color of other furniture and/or textiles; it is not advisable for the chair to blend in color with the wallpaper in the room, but isn’t this just a camouflage)

You can buy a bean bag chair in a furniture store, but on the Internet there are often shops specializing only in bean bag chairs of various shapes. The beauty is that in such stores you can buy pear chairs, ball chairs, etc. with different funny prints, a Mickey Mouse chair, a banana chair, etc., but this complicates the situation even more, such a chair in the interior may look like a foreign body.

How to choose a beanbag chair in a store

If you decide to sew a bean bag chair with your own hands, you will have some advantage in the choice of fabric, color, add some savings to this family budget and the scales will tip to the side: sew a bean bag chair with your own hands!

How to sew a bean bag chair with your own hands

Sewing a bean bag chair with your own hands is simple from a technical point of view, but it can be a little inconvenient, which is due to the size of the chair.

By and large, a bean bag chair consists of two covers. The inner cover of the bean bag chair must be made of durable fabric, because... the load on the chair will be substantial and if you sew an inner cover from old fabric, such as old curtains, sheets, tablecloths, etc., then there is a high risk that such a cover will tear and all the filling will spill into the upper cover; pouring it out is not an easy task . For the inner cover it is good to use mattress fabric, it is not very easy to find, but this fabric is elastic, adds softness and improves appearance the chair itself. Or at least a waterproof fabric that is as durable as polyester; if you spill a drink on the chair bag, the filling will remain dry and you won’t have to worry about drying it, you just wash the top cover.

It is preferable to sew the inner cover of the chair from light fabric, in case the upper cover is see-through. The top cover should also be made of durable fabric for obvious reasons.

What fabric to sew a bean bag chair from: for a bean bag chair to last a long time, choose good quality furniture fabric, for example, leatherette, oxford, thermal jacquard, etc.

What is a bean bag chair filled with?

Polystyrene foam balls are used as filler for the chair; 2/3 of the filler should be poured into the inner cover. If you put the filler in the inner cover, it will be problematic to tighten the upper cover. Over time, the polystyrene foam balls become wrinkled due to weight, their volume decreases, and then they need to be replenished. For one chair you will need approximately 200-250 liters, depending on the size of the chair; you can buy balls at a hardware store. It is better to choose balls with a density of 10 kg/m3; they will last longer because... crumple less. To make it soft to sit in the chair, add 500g to the filler. synthetic fluff (holofiber)

From this video you will learn how polystyrene foam balls differ and which ones are more practical to use as filler for a bean bag chair, how to pour the filler into a chair cover and how to remove spilled polystyrene foam from the floor. Practical tips!
