DIY home bar from a canister. Minibar for a workshop or garage in country style

Every man at least once in his life dreamed of having his own minibar in the house. A place where alcohol, cola and other drinks would be scolded. It's not even a matter of practical considerations. Here more of a question in aesthetics. But, as they say, it depends on the taste and color...

The basis was an ordinary 20 liter canister. The canister is new (not used). Enough has been cut into her big hole, from the front.

The simplest loops were bought at the store, 2 pieces. They are fixed with rivets.

On the other side, the cover is fixed with a clip. Everything is extremely simple.

The lintels were cut from wood to size. There are 4 sections in total. The largest one is the cola section. There's room for five cans here. Then there is one compartment for cognac, another of the same size for soft drinks in a can. And another large section for Jack Denels cognac.

For decoration, a door was made of mesh, and a hook was installed to secure a bottle of cognac.

This is how the mini bar turned out. We have it hanging on the wall in the garage. Quite an interesting thing. Always attracts the attention of guests.

1. Materials:
- three whole construction pallets;
- wood screws;
- bolts and nuts - three pieces each;
- nails;
- decorative- protective coating for wood.

2. Tools:
- grinder or sandpaper (coarse and fine);
- screwdriver;
- electric drill;
- hammer;
- construction tape;
- wrench;
- paint brush, rags.

Step 1: Preparing the Pallets

Today you don't even have to completely disassemble the pallets. Your task is to make the back wall and tabletop of the bar, sewn solidly on one side as shown in the photo below.

Sand the workpieces with a grinder or sandpaper manually. First, go over the wood with coarse sandpaper to level the surface. Then begin sanding with fine-grit sandpaper until the wood is smooth and pleasant to the touch.

Connect the two parts together using self-tapping screws. You can use decorative overlays on the screw heads if such a need arises.

To prevent the boards from cracking or splintering during the process of screwing in the screws, pre-drill holes for fastening with a drill with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the self-tapping screws that you use.

Step 2: making the base of the minibar

Now it's the turn of the last pallet. Carefully disassemble it into individual planks. Remember that very often in the process of making pallets screw nails are used, which can be quite difficult to remove in the usual way. Craftsmen who deal with dismantling pallets every day use an electric reciprocating saw for this. You can take a hacksaw or still try to disassemble the pallet as usual, but act as carefully as possible.

Measure and cut pieces for legs and braces. You can mark a bias line to make sure the braces are flush, but we didn't bother with that.

Sand all parts in the same manner as described in step #1 before starting to assemble the base.

Attach the legs to the tabletop with self-tapping screws and install braces.

In the courtyard on Bolshaya Vasilkovskaya opposite Arena City there is a small row of brick garages, picturesquely covered with ivy. They are mostly old and dilapidated, but well made, so they are still strong. A couple of months ago, a bar-coffee shop was opened in one of these garages - AM Bar. The owners characterize this place as “a symbiosis of incompatibilities.”

We found out who came up with the idea to turn a garage into an establishment where granola is served at breakfast and extreme cocktails are prepared in the evenings. We also looked where the elevator, which looked like a guillotine, led, asked where there were so many instruments in the bar, and where the owners found an ancient barometer.

Idea

Vitaly Kordonsky is engaged in construction and design, he is the co-founder of a design studio Rock&Wood. Once he set up an office in a garage for a friend of his. In general, the skills were there.

This spring, a friend suggested we look at his friend’s garage and think together about what we could do with it. At that time, the garage looked exactly as abandoned as the neighboring ones. It had not been used for its intended purpose for a long time, but various rubbish was simply stored there, so we decided to rent it out.

But inside it turned out to be much more interesting - there was a second floor and an underground part, that is, essentially three levels in a small area. True, there were no stairs up, no normal descent into the basement - only a standard garage pit. But the guys liked the premises, they were inspired by the idea and after 2-3 days they had a sketch of the future establishment.

“My friend Ruslan Kosarevich, co-founder of Rock&Wood, and I had just returned from Spain and were impressed by the small and cramped bars where people gather in the evenings to chat and drink. We initially understood that we did not want to be an establishment where people sit and kill time. I wanted you to pop along the road, talk to someone, knock over a glass and move on,” explains Vitaly.

Implementation

Several more friends, Pavel Tetera and Marianna Zhuravleva, agreed to become partners, the guys divided the responsibilities among themselves and started working. Vitaly was involved in the implementation of the idea. Since the garage is located among residential buildings and I didn’t want to disturb the neighbors, and there were enough other things to do, the renovation was done slowly. They finished it in about three months and opened on July 3rd.

The usual gates were replaced with new ones that rise and fall on cables.

The ceiling and walls were only cleaned, but were deliberately left in their original form, and the floor was made of wood. They built a staircase to the second floor, where they organized something like a small lounge area with a sofa made of pallets.

To descend into basement We decided to make a telpher lift, since the stairs would take up too much space, and the elevator also added atmosphere. By the way, they thought about organizing something like a warehouse in the lower room, but then they decided that it would be blasphemy to litter such a space. Under the garage was not an ordinary one damp basement, but practically catacombs with stone vaults. So they just cleared the walls and left everything as it was:

“We have a Hush Hush cocktail on the menu, we haven’t fully figured it out yet, but we plan to use the elevator and basement to serve it. For example, a guest and a bartender will go downstairs on a lift, quickly drink a large portion of a cocktail, and then some kind of blow to the helmet with a hammer, for example. In general, so that after one cocktail he doesn’t need anything else.”

To decorate the main space of the establishment, the guys found a lot of old tools at a flea market and hung them on the walls. There was even a rake above the bar, and a plane next to it.

In addition, Vitaly, as a builder, knows a warehouse near Kiev where various things have been assembled almost since the 70s. Huge lamps, an ancient barometer and an old rotary telephone were found there.

The tables on the summer area are former paint barrels.

Contents and plans

Since the garage is located in the very center, and there are many clubs and bars nearby, the guys finally settled on the idea of positioning the establishment as a pre-party bar. Therefore, the menu here is quite simple: granola with homemade yogurt, quiches, baked apples. In general, breakfasts and lunches, not full meals. But, according to Vitaly, in the Bessarabka region there are already enough establishments where you can have a satisfying meal.

But they are working thoroughly on the cocktail menu. And, of course, they make coffee.

By the way, even the oven in which the brought frozen pies are baked is a rarity.

After six o'clock in the evening small tables and the chairs in the main hall are folded up as if in a reserved seat carriage, and in their place a long counter is installed. So in the evenings the coffee shop really turns into a bar, where you can sit only on the second floor.

They are no longer planning to change anything globally, but, of course, they want to continue working on the interior. Moreover, it will soon get colder and you will only be able to sit inside.

For those who want to stay here longer than for a cup of coffee, a small library has begun to be formed.

In order not to disturb the neighbors, noisy parties are not held in the yard, but birthdays and various holidays are already held inside the bar itself, they simply turn on the music.

The cocktail menu will still be finalized. In particular, they promise to come up with several extreme cocktails in the Hush Hush style.

The workshop is a place not only for work, but also for a well-deserved rest. After all, how nice it is sometimes to reward yourself for the work done with a glass of wine or an intricate cocktail.

For this, it is useful to have your own mini-bar, where the ritual takes on an appropriate festive look and gathers a warm male company of friends and acquaintances in your workshop.

As a rule, creating a bar counter requires special skills on working with valuable species wood, as well as with specific bar fittings. Not surprisingly, the entire process takes a long time and entails exorbitant costs.

We set ourselves the task of simplifying it as much as possible, while minimizing all costs. As a result, we settled on an idea that would only take half a day to implement - to make a minibar from pallets that had long been awaiting their fate and were ready for transformation. In the end, we only used the materials we had on hand and didn't spend a penny.

The minibar turned out to match the workshop where we planned to install it - purely male fun in country style - no less.

The only expense that someone will still have to make is a protective coating for the tree. As a matter of principle, we did not waste money and used decorative oil, because we conveniently had some leftovers on hand. If you are less fortunate and still haven’t found anything suitable, buy the material based on your own preferences. However, we would advise you to opt for transparent and translucent coatings, such as natural linseed oil, drying oil, oil stain(decorative oil) or protective and decorative coatings, such as new generation water-based alkyd toners. All of them emphasize and preserve the natural texture of wood.

So, it's time to get started, and today you will need the following materials and tools:

1. Materials:
- three whole construction pallets;
- wood screws;
- bolts and nuts - three pieces each;
- nails;
- decorative and protective coating for wood.

2. Tools:
- sanding machine or sandpaper (coarse and fine);
- screwdriver;
- electric drill;
- hammer;
- construction tape;
- wrench;
- paint brush, rags.

Step 1: Preparing the Pallets

Today you don't even have to completely disassemble the pallets. Your task is to make the back wall and tabletop of the bar, sewn solidly on one side as shown in the photo below.

Sand the workpieces with a grinder or sandpaper by hand. First, go over the wood with coarse sandpaper to level the surface. Then begin sanding with fine-grit sandpaper until the wood is smooth and pleasant to the touch.

Connect the two parts together using self-tapping screws. You can use decorative overlays on the screw heads if such a need arises.

Sand all parts in the same manner as described in step #1 before starting to assemble the base.

Attach the legs to the tabletop with self-tapping screws and install braces.

Step 3: making panels for storing bottles, glasses and other equipment

In our case, the panel for glasses will be located below, in front of the tabletop. To do this, mark and cut out slots with holes in the depth into which the stem of the glass could freely pass.

To store bottles, drill several holes with a diameter of 32-35 millimeters at an angle of 45 degrees in the upper part of the back wall. To do this, use a drill and a special attachment for working with wood.

On the left we arranged three decorative hooks from silver spoons. To do this, make the spoons flat using a hammer. Bend them into the required shape, drill holes for fasteners and bolt them to the top panel of the minibar.

Step 4: Finishing

If you feel the need, go over the surface of the minibar again with fine-grained sandpaper. Finish the side edges and cut lines.

"from the material below you will learn how to make a mini-bar from a 20-liter canister with your own hands... How to make a mini-bar from a canister, everything is quite simple, you will need a metal canister of 20 liters, it is advisable that it has not been previously used for storage fuels and lubricants. If the canister is old, then you will have to thoroughly wash it with soda and other potent detergents to fight off the smell. After that, markings are made for the minibar door, we retreat 2-2.5 cm from the edge and draw a line using a marker. Then with a drill cutting disc we follow the intended contour and make a shallow groove, so that in the future it will be convenient to saw with a grinder. The sawn lid is carefully passed along the edges with a file, because after sawing there are some irregularities and nicks left, we remove them. Next, it is put on the door and frame rubber seal. In order for the bar door to open and close, install furniture hinges. Shelves are made of wood inside, depending on what you are going to store there)

Let's look at what exactly is needed to make a minibar from a canister?

Materials

  1. canister 20 l
  2. rubber seal
  3. board 10-15 mm (for shelves)
  4. loops

Tools

  1. bur machine
  2. grinder (angle grinder)
  3. drill
  4. screwdriver
  5. marker
  6. ruler

Step-by-step instructions for creating a minibar from a canister.

The first step is to prepare a canister, preferably 20 liters.
We outline the outline of the future door using a marker and ruler. Paste masking tape and draw the line again.
We follow the intended contour with a burr. We cut a groove.
Then we cut it out with a grinder.
This is what happens.

We process the removed door with a file.
We put on the rubber seal.

We put the door on the hinges. Next we make wooden shelves.

This is the kind of minibar the author came up with; you can store small things and objects in it; for example, the author adapted it as a shelf for his camera. Now let's watch the video and consolidate the material covered. Enjoy your viewing 😉
