Making curtains with your own hands from scrap materials

Curtains are an integral part of the interior that will complement the design of any room. It is difficult to imagine a cozy home without this item. If you are a creative person and love extraordinary solutions, or you just have a limited budget, you can easily make curtains yourself. To do this, you do not need any expensive equipment or fabrics - it is quite possible to sew curtains from scrap materials that are in every home.

We sew curtains with our own hands: step by step instructions

The easiest to manufacture (eyelets). Before you start making draperies, you must measure the dimensions using a construction tape. Then you have to decide on the fabric and the length of the curtains. After that, get yourself the necessary tools - a cut of fabric, a simple pencil, non-woven linen, an iron, a hammer.

For sewing textiles, you need a sewing machine.

Step-by-step instructions for making curtains on rings are presented below:

  1. Cut the fabric, making small hem allowances (about 3 cm). The width allowance should be much larger - about 15-20 cm.
  2. Sew curtains on all sides.
  3. Glue the upper edge of the drapery with eyelet tape. The optimal strip width is 10-12 cm. When gluing the strip, step back about 1.5 or 2 cm from the side edges of the curtain.
  4. Iron the curtain with an iron.
  5. Insert the rings in such a way as to form lining on the curtains. It is desirable that the number of rings is even. This will give the curtain symmetry.
  6. On the pattern, mark the future ring. Use scissors to cut holes.
  7. Then the pattern is placed on the second ring and snapped into place with a half of the eyelet.

If you have a suitable cut, you can make drawstring curtains. They will fit perfectly if the design of your room is made in the style of minimalism or empire.

The sewing process for such a drapery is as follows:

  • Measure the height and width of the window opening. Add 5-6 cm to the numbers obtained.
  • Then, iron over the work piece, and set aside 2 cm from the bottom edge to make a hem.
  • Sew the hem at the top and bottom.
  • Hang curtains.

Homemade curtains on a removable lining will fit perfectly into the interior of the living room. Such drapery is unpretentious in care. To make a curtain, take a cut of linen fabric, and ordinary satin is suitable for the lining. The production of the curtain begins with attaching the lining to the base material using a special tape with buttons. The tape needs to be sewn. After that, measure the curtain without taking into account the lining. Next, you need to tuck the side and bottom of the lining, and then walk over them with an iron. Then you need to carefully pin the hem with a sewing machine. After that, using a ruler or tape measure, measure the length of the upper part of the lining fabric, and pin the tape of the appropriate size to its upper edge. Pull the ends of the cords out and slide them to the inside of the lining fabric. Sew the ends of the tape, and hang the curtains.

Velcro curtains have been very popular lately. You can make them at home using available tools. You will need curtain fabric, weight bars, plastic rings, pencil, ears, cords, and curtain tape.

The manufacture of such a drapery must be carried out in the following order:

  1. Make a pattern for the product. In doing so, take into account the dimensions of the window.
  2. Make a small pocket at the bottom of the canvas. It is required to insert the weighting compound.
  3. On the seamy side of the product, mark the places for future folds, and stitch the curtain tape on them. After making the pockets horizontally, insert 3 rings into each.
  4. Sew the Velcro over the fabric.
  5. Attach the curtains to the eaves, and attach the ears to the bar.
  6. Pass each cord through the corresponding ring. It is worth noting that you need to thread the cords in such a way that they form a perpendicular line in relation to the curtain fabric.
  7. Pull the cord out to the side, and secure them with a knot.
  8. Attach a special hook on the side of the drape to secure the cord tightly.

How to make a curtain clip with your own hands

The original clip will help to give the curtains originality. For example, you can pick up with roses. To do this, you will need a fabric, a sewing meter, threads, a needle, scissors, textile flowers. First, decide on the length of the drape clip. To do this, slide the curtains and measure their girth. Add another 200-300 mm to the resulting number.

Choose the width of the pick up arbitrarily.

After that, using scissors, cut out a rectangle of the required dimensions, and fold it with the front side inward, and then in half. Sew it while leaving a small area open. Turn this section out, and sew it back together. Then sew the textile flowers to the resulting product.

You can also make a clip with pendants. To do this, you need multi-colored buttons, a 700 mm cord, and a 1 mm diameter wire.

The clip making process is as follows:

  • Cut off about 40-50 cm of wire and fold it in half.
  • String the buttons onto the end of the wire.
  • Twist the wire a few turns.
  • Make a couple of twists and tie the finished clip to the curtain.

Do-it-yourself curtains

In order to make curtains you will need a pattern, scissors, needle, thread, iron, blind stitches and a sewing machine.

First, measure the size of the window, and add about 50 mm to the resulting dimensions.

Then cut out a piece to the appropriate size and sew the edges. Then iron the seam with an iron. Then fold the edges and sew on the hem. Then sew the workpiece again. Next, start making the tie. To do this, cut a 7x52 cm strip and sew it lengthwise. Tie the end of the blank into a knot. Then sew the strings to the curtains. After that, make hems on the drapery, and secure them from the seamy side using blind stitches. Then hang the resulting curtain on the cornice.

DIY bead curtains: the manufacturing process

If you are tired of the usual draperies - sew. To do this, you need to acquire multi-colored crystal beads, fishing line, cornice and scissors.

String the beads onto the line first.

Then, as you are ready, secure the beaded threads to the eaves. To avoid confusion between adjacent curtains, thread the line along the bottom edge of the curtain through the last beads.

DIY curtains from old curtains: is it possible

From the old ones, you can easily make fashionable roller blinds. To do this, you will need 2 meters of fabric, a thermal gun with glue, scissors, and a sewing machine. First you need to measure the width and height of the window frame. Then, using scissors, cut out a workpiece from the fabric, the dimensions of which will be slightly larger.

After that, cut off the blinds until there are 5-6 pieces of them left.

Do-it-yourself extraordinary curtain decorations

In order to decorate curtains with your own hands, you do not need to attend any master class. You just need a little imagination and some materials. If the curtain is made of organza, you can decorate it with textile flowers.

If the drapery is made of dense fabric, we decorate it with chiffon stripes that can be stitched on with a typewriter.

Checkered fabric will help to decorate a plain curtain. For example, you can cut a piece of such textiles. Then sew it, and pin it to the drapery with pins.
