Thread curtains are back in fashion: we select a successful model

Filament curtains, undeservedly forgotten by interior designers for several years, are returning to the peak of fashion again. Individuality is still in trend, so you can choose any model for your home, today there are no prohibitions on either sequins or burlap. The main thing is to make sure that the chosen muslin goes well with the rest of the interior elements.

  • have a low darkening effect, so you can use black threads even in a small room;
  • can be easily combined with any other types of curtains: they will look harmoniously both in tandem with a complex classic lambrequin and with laconic white pleated blinds;
  • perfectly zoning the space. The thread curtain clearly marks the boundaries of the functional area, but at the same time it is so transparent that it does not interfere with the visual perception of the total area. In addition, the wall of individual threads can be easily pushed apart in any desired place, unlike a conventional curtain, which only moves away from the edge;
  • easy to care for, as they do not require cleaning and ironing. If they are hung on the cornice while still wet, the threads straighten themselves under the influence of gravity. In addition, muslin does not collect dust at all, which means that it will have to be washed much less often;
  • help create the illusion of the absence of a wall. Hanging a curtain in a small room at a distance of 2–4 cm from the wall will help to visually expand the space. For maximum effect, designers use contrasting colors: white threads on dark walls or bright threads on a white surface. To enhance the feeling of the absence of walls, the decor is complemented with eaves lighting or a luminous baseboard;
  • do not interfere with natural ventilation. The air flows freely between the threads, so the curtains do not need to be pushed back when you open the window for ventilation. They also do not interfere with the transfer of heat from the batteries during the heating season;
  • muslin threads do not unravel after cutting. This means that if you get tired of the chosen length of curtains, you can easily cut them with a wave, at an angle, with teeth or straight with ordinary office scissors.
Even a modest muslin looks great when supplemented with juicy accents.

The disadvantages of curtains-threads can be attributed only to a low degree of dimming and lack of sound insulation. But since they are chosen primarily for visual effect, such disadvantages can be ignored. If it is important for you to additionally darken the room, complement the muslin with horizontal blinds or roller shutters with a blackout effect. And to highlight a cozy, quiet area in the room, put a transparent glass partition and decorate it with a cotton curtain.

Kiseya never weighs down the space. You can safely create multi-layered compositions of 3-4 contrasting shades.

Varieties of thread curtains

Filament curtains can be called any curtains in which the elements are not fastened into a single canvas, but are held together only due to the connecting segment at the cornice. Since threads of different thicknesses, origins (natural, synthetic, mixed), textures (smooth flowing, thick textured), lengths and colors can be connected in this way, the designers have created hundreds of models of such curtains. But they can be divided into three main types.

Kiseya

  1. Kisei made of fine threads. Such models look good in all interior styles and only they fit into minimalism, loft and hi-tech. Kisei made of unbleached linen will be a good addition to the eco-interior. The easiest way to change a thin muslin is to your liking: cut, braid, make bunches, fasten fragments with hairpins and grabs.
  2. Kisei made of threads with a wire frame. The main threads of such a curtain are often made more voluminous, lurex is woven into them, the thread is created from several types of fibers. These types of muslin look more rough and textured, so they look good in men's interiors. It is not recommended to cut the curtains yourself, as the ends of the thread can be frizzy.
    The addition of lurex makes the muslin more elegant
  3. Kiseya with a picture. In such models, the threads are partially intertwined, creating openwork silhouettes of animals and flowers, fantasy or geometric patterns. Floristic options for such products fit perfectly into bedrooms and children's rooms in Provence and neoclassical styles; animalistic emphasizes the safari style; geometric patterns are successfully combined with hi-tech and minimalism.
  4. Noodles. Such a curtain does not consist of threads, but of very thin flat ribbons. The noodles look very good as a contrasting spot, they allow you to independently fix jewelry on ribbons with simple knots and better protect thin threads from sunlight. Ribbon curtains are great for bold interiors: pop art, boho, fusion, eclecticism.
  5. Kiseya with pendants. To make ordinary threads more beautiful and original, textile designers complement them with beads, sequins, flowers, feathers, tiny pompoms. As a rule, decorations take up no more than 3–7% of the curtain's area. The decor is strung in any desired order (chaotically, in the form of a geometric, floral pattern). Beads with a shiny "metallic" surface and transparent glass look best in rooms of glamor, eclecticism, boho style, and wooden beads - in ethno (dark stained and natural shades) and provence (painted in a pale color).

The larger the jewelry on the muslin, the longer the curtain should be.

Kiseya can be not only straight, but also curly (the threads are twisted into spirals). Such models very effectively complement the youth interior, but keep in mind that they are much easier to get confused.

Curtains-beads

  1. Beads from chains. Thin chains can look very feminine and stylish, therefore they are used not only in men's interiors. Such curtains are most popular in youth entertainment centers, clubs, restaurants. Sometimes chains are used in bachelor living rooms and ladies' boudoirs in glamor style. The type of curtains depends on the type of weaving and the color of the chains (silver, gold, bronze). Rough chains look better long, but you can create short curtains from thin ones.
  2. Beads from small beads on a fishing line. This type of thread curtains differs from muslin with pendants in that it consists entirely of beads (the same or different), the central thread / string is hidden or invisible. Such curtains are noticeably heavier than thread curtains, so their fastening must be very reliable. The crystal cascade is always a winning detail for any interior with a touch of glamor. Colored variations of curtain beads fit easily into pop art, fusion, retro.
  3. Beads from flat elements. Such models differ from the previous type in the type of fastening. Here, the elements are most often not strung on a string, but fastened together with connecting rings. The distance between the flat beads is determined by the size and number of these rings. Curtains of thin flat decorative elements usually begin to ring or rustle melodiously at the slightest movement, so if this effect is unpleasant to you, it is better not to use them. Such curtains fit perfectly into high-tech and loft, but they can harmoniously complement almost any modern interior. Sequin models will be appropriate in a room with notes of oriental luxury.

Original curtains from flat beads can be assembled by yourself. The larger the beads, the easier it is to create an extensive canvas out of them to decorate your own interior.

Venetian blinds

Thread blinds are similar to ordinary vertical ones, only their lamellas are not solid, but are composed of separate threads. The latter can be fixed by the upper and lower strips or only by the upper ones. In a fully closed state, they look like an ordinary filament curtain, but it is worth turning the slats at an angle, and the appearance of the window becomes much more interesting.

The most successful blinds made of threads look next to the transparent panoramic walls of country mansions, but they can well decorate a French window onto a balcony or loggia.

Due to the modern mechanism of fastening and control, thread blinds are poorly combined with the classics, baroque and Provence, but they look great in minimalism, eclecticism, urbanistic, ecological styles.

It is best to use thread blinds almost to the floor, short options do not look so impressive. But you can choose any color, from neutral white to acid rainbow.

We will take into account the cornice

Filament curtains can be classified according to the method of attachment. For example, thread blinds are attached to a standard vertical blinds system. Other types are attached in the same way as conventional curtains:

  • on the eyelets. To insert metal rings, the top of the curtain is made of dense, non-stretching fabric, the threads themselves begin 8–12 cm below the cornice. The cornice for this method is only suitable for round, so that it can be threaded through the rings;
  • on clips. The method is similar to the standard crocodile fastening, but since the upper part of the thread curtain is made of delicate thin fabric, it is clamped with clamps without teeth. This method is suitable for all types of curtain rods, both ceiling and wall. If it is important for the design of the room that the threads start straight from the ceiling, the cornice should be sunk in the ceiling niche;
  • on the hooks. Sometimes the threads are held together by a tape attached to the back, to which it is easy to attach hooks or rings for threading them. This method is most often used when a filament curtain needs to be fixed directly to the ceiling and slightly tucked up so that it does not look like a smooth cascade;
  • with Velcro. The soft part of the Velcro is sewn to the top of the curtain, and a strip with hooks is sewn to the flat cornice. (Do not mix up so that the hooks do not sweep the threads during washing). Thanks to this system, the curtain can be hung / removed in just one movement. It is important to remember that this option is only suitable for light muslin, heavy beads will not withstand the fastening;
  • the cornice is threaded through a fabric pocket or loops. Fastening is typical for Provence style curtains. For such models, the upper part of the curtain should be sewn from a dense but smooth fabric so that it glides easily over the round cornice. This version of filament curtains is quite decorative, but it should only be used in cases where you do not plan to move the curtain to the side often.

When choosing filament curtains, consider which cornice they will be attached to.

Choosing curtains for the whole apartment

  1. Bedroom. The main thing in the bedroom is calmness, warmth and softness. Therefore, it is better to choose the laconic curtains for the personal room itself from thin flowing threads. It is advisable to choose the color to match the background shade of the interior or a little lighter.
    Filament curtains in the same color scheme with a general design act as a bridging separating the sleeping area The ideal length is floor-length, or even longer, so that the curtains fall onto the floor in beautiful folds. Decorative hairpins and tie-backs with tassels will help diversify the design. Filament curtains in the bedroom can not only decorate the door and window, but also create a canopy over the bed.
  2. Living room. The reception room should look cozy and at the same time ceremonial. Bright and contrasting thread curtains, multi-layer compositions of several colors, length transitions and other non-standard solutions are appropriate here. They are convenient to use to decorate the window (especially if it opens onto the balcony) and delimit the dining and relaxation areas:
    Black and red curtains look contrasting, and different combination options zone the room
  3. Children's. The choice of suitable cotton curtains for the nursery depends on the age and gender of the child. It is safer for very young children to live in a room with a shortened muslin just below the windowsill. Long curtains will certainly interest the kid and he may accidentally pull them over himself along with the cornice. For a school-age boy, short thread blinds match the background or accent colors of the interior. The young man may like the idea of using small chains instead of curtains:
  4. Kitchen. In the cooking area, first of all, not decor is required, but practicality. Therefore, it is best to pick up a muslin for the kitchen without any decorations and with a special impregnation that repels dirt. For beauty, you can create a composition of 2-3 layers of threads of different colors and lengths. The optimal length of the curtain depends on the intensity of use of the window sill. If the working area is sufficient and it remains empty, the curtains can be made almost to the floor. But if there are small household appliances on the windowsill, the edge of the curtain should not go lower than 30–35 cm from the windowsill. The color can be selected both to match the walls and in contrast, but in a darkened cold room it is better to give preference to light, sunny tones.
  5. Cabinet and office. In the working room, the most appropriate will be thread blinds of restrained shades, as well as laconic muslin up to the windowsill. Bright colors and decorations only distract from work, so they are best used in home interiors. But in the company's office, luscious shades of curtains help create a more relaxed and homely atmosphere.

In addition, thread curtains are often used in cafes, restaurants, entertainment venues. Here they serve to give a decorative effect, so designers most often choose bright models that contrast with the main setting. They can serve as stationary partitions, accentuate the entrance group or decorate the ceiling. In such places, the most non-standard and even impractical types of thread curtains are appropriate.

How to care for yarn curtains

It may seem that it is very difficult to care for such air curtains, but in fact, it is enough to adhere to a few simple rules:

Curtains-threads do not need to be ironed at all, so their care is much easier than for any other curtains made of fabric. You can safely hang the entire wall with muslin without fear that you will have to spend a lot of time caring for it.

If ease of care is especially important, give preference to polyester curtains. They are difficult to break and do not have to be ironed, even if the threads do not dry by weight.

The opinion of designers about muslin in the interior

In 2017, designers continue to support the ecological trend. They recommend using muslin made from natural materials (linen, cotton, bamboo, silk), preferably in natural colors. All shades of ocher, brown, olive, green are welcome, but not acidic, but slightly muted.

The design of curtains should be as simple as possible so that the decor does not interfere with admiring natural colors and textures. As pendants, a tree will be quite appropriate, preferably not stained and covered with natural wax.

Video: options for draping cotton curtains

Filament curtains are an excellent confirmation of the cyclical nature of fashion. If you have a beaded curtain lost in your attic, it's time to fit it into a modern interior. Those who are unlucky enough to find a gift from the past should create a cotton curtain with their own hands or choose a suitable model in the store. It is easy to find an option that will successfully complement the design of the house.
