History of the trail

The picturesque path, which is partially carved into the rocks, appeared here in 1912. Prince Lev Golitsyn ordered it to be built for the arrival of Emperor Nicholas II.

The emperor decided to visit the New World, and then this village was called Paradise, for a reason. The fact is that towards the end of his life Golitsyn experienced not only health problems, but also financial difficulties. In order to preserve the unique estate with vineyards and a factory, he decides to donate part of it to the emperor. History tells that it was during the emperor’s arrival that the village of Paradise changed its name to New World. After a walk along the Golitsyn path, the autocrat was invited to a delicious meal, where over a glass of wine he said that he now sees life in a new light.

In 1927, an earthquake occurred in Crimea, which damaged the trail. It was later restored and reopened to tourists.

Mount Koba-Kaya

In 1912, the founder of Crimean winemaking, Lev Sergeevich Golitsyn, was preparing to welcome Emperor Nicholas II, who was traveling along the coast on the yacht “Standart” with his family, to his estate Paradise. The hospitable host wanted to treat the honorary visitors to sparkling wine in his cellars, for which he ordered a wide, convenient road to be cut into the coastal rocks leading to a deep grotto where hectoliters of champagne were stored. But this seemed not enough, the trail was continued further along the coast to the foot of Mount Karaul-Oba.

What to see

The Golitsyn Trail is a charming route for lovers beautiful views, fresh air and vintage sparkling wine. It begins at the foot of Mount Eagle on the shores of Green Bay and quickly leads to the entrance to a deep grotto, where the wine cellars were located. The cave has extraordinary acoustics; they say that during Chaliapin’s performance under its arches, the sound of a mighty voice broke a bottle of champagne. Here travelers can relax with a glass of excellent wine.

Another legend is associated with the phrase of Nicholas II that after tasting, a new world was revealed to him. Golitsin immediately renamed the estate, so it appeared on the map of Crimea famous village New World.

Further the trail leads through a juniper grove to Cape Kapchik, a narrow isthmus with numerous caves. One of them, the Robber, even pierces him right through. Unfortunately, tourist access there is now closed due to the threat of landslides. But the other beauties are more than enough to fill the soul with sincere admiration.

The excursion program ends here, but you can go further. The paths become less well-groomed, the slopes become wilder. Eventually the descent leads to a secluded beach, called Tsarsky because of its inaccessibility and rare clear water.

One of the most famous and picturesque tourist routes in Crimea is named after Lev Sergeevich Golitsyn, the prince thanks to whom winemaking began to develop on an industrial scale in Crimea.

Initially, he planted vineyards near Feodosia, and in 1878 the prince bought the Paradise tract near Sudak, which was later renamed New World. Here the prince planted about 20 hectares of grapes and began producing sparkling wines at the newly built plant.

Route history

In 1912, Emperor Nicholas II took a Black Sea yacht cruise with his family and visited Golitsyn’s estate. It was for the emperor that the path was cut down, which today bears the name of the prince.

According to legend, after this visit of the emperor, the estate (and after it the village) was renamed: after tasting local champagne at lunch, Nicholas II exclaimed that he now sees the surrounding reality in a new light.

Route description

Today, daily excursions are held along the Golitsyn Trail, but you can walk the route (its length is just over 3 km) on your own. It begins in the southwest of Green Bay; the first stage takes place right above the sea, along the slope of Mount Koba-Kaya (also called Mount Eagle). Even under Golitsyn, galleries were carved into the depths of the mountain in which wine, including collection wine, was stored. For example, a separate basement was intended for storing especially valuable wine of the 18th-19th centuries.

Chaliapin's Grotto

The first stop on the route is the Chaliapin Grotto, also called the Golitsyn Grotto and the Variety Grotto. This is a natural cave formed by sea waves, which served as the site of a rock monastery in the Middle Ages. A concert hall was equipped here for the emperor’s visit, and in general the very wine tasting, after which it was decided to rename the estate, took place in this cave.

In the depths of the grotto there is a stage. There is a legend that Chaliapin performed there, and the sound of his voice in a confined space was so strong that a glass of champagne broke. However, this is most likely just a beautiful legend: it is known that the great singer never visited the New World. Other man-made structures in the cave are arches that once housed champagne.

Cape Kapchik

After Chaliapin's grotto, the trail goes west along rocky mountain cliffs, from where stunning views open up, and descends to the beach in Sinaya Bay, on Cape Kapchik. And from the top of the watershed there are views of the Blue Bay and the beach, called Tsarsky, because members of the imperial family once loved to relax here.

In this part the road is also called the Path of Fidelity, again because of an old legend. There is a small section here (entrance is closed to tourists) where the trail becomes almost vertical. They say that one of the Crimean khans used it to test his wives: the one who can walk these few meters with a jug on her head is faithful to her husband.

In the center of Sinaya Bay there is another cave called Legend. True, getting into it is not easy: most of the grotto is hidden sea ​​waters. Another attraction of this place is the Through Grotto, a chasm stretching across the cape. After Cape Kapchik, the route moves away from the coast and through a juniper grove leads to the village of Novy Svet, to the Museum of Winemaking.

How to get to the Golitsyn trail, map

For tourists who vacation in Sudak, getting to the route is very simple: with an excursion, the first part of which involves a short sea ​​voyage, and the second is a walk. You can independently come to the bus station in the village of Novy Svet (minibuses from Sudak run at intervals of 20-30 minutes), and from there walk to the beginning of the trail. Entrance to the route is paid: it passes through the territory of the New World reserve, so you need to pay an environmental fee.

For this purpose, the path that passed through one of the grottoes with stocks of aged champagne was strengthened and landscaped.

But not only the king was honored to walk here. Golitsyn had another favorite guest - Fyodor Chaliapin. He appreciated the beautiful views opening from here and the grottoes through which the path passes. The singer believed that the acoustics there were perfect. In 1927, the destruction severely damaged the Golitsyn Trail in the New World, but it remains passable without any equipment and attracts crowds of tourists every year.

Legends of the Golitsyn Trail

Like almost all historical places, the Golitsyn trail in the New World has long been overgrown with a mass of fairy tales and legends. Some guides who lead excursions here “in all seriousness” explain the origin of the original name “path of the infidels” with punishments for adultery. The Tatars themselves give a different explanation: there was a monastery in the mountains,
and along the path there were Christian pilgrims - “guiaurs”, “infidels” in Muslim terminology.

But most of the stories are told about the main rock cavity known as. Among other things, this fairy tale arose. At this point, the friends decided to play a joke on the prince, who boasted of his skills in determining the quality of champagne. Lev Sergeevich argued that when you open a bottle of a quality drink, the cork pops, but the wine does not splash, only white “smoke” appears.

On a hot day, the jokers thoroughly shook a bottle of champagne and invited the prince to evaluate the drink. Naturally, His Excellency not only bathed in wine himself, but also doused the wall of the grotto. And then medieval frescoes appeared on it under the influence of wine... It is impossible to see them - it is claimed that time destroyed them. But it won’t hurt to remember the principle of quality control from Golitsyn!

Excursion along the Golitsyn trail

An interesting route starts literally from the village of Novy Svet itself. The Golitsyn trail climbs Mount Eagle, skirting the cape. Its total length is about 3 km. The main attraction on the way is the same Golitsyn grotto, where the champagne was aged and the prince himself popped the cork. It was dug into the stone by water, and in some places its height reaches 30 m. Its other name is Chaliapin’s grotto, since this was the place the singer preferred for informal concerts. He admired the acoustics, and the sound of the sea provided additional accompaniment.

Further, the trail leads to the cliffs of Mount Khoba-Kaya, where bizarre piles of rocks resemble some kind of fantastic kingdom. Some scientists believe that the Tauri had a hand in this stone labyrinth - ancient people of those who inhabited Crimea. When entering the path, it passes over an underwater cave, it is called “Legend”. There are no excursions here, but those who wish, armed with a flashlight and a strong rope, the end of which is held by a reliable friend on the shore, can try to examine it.

Perhaps the most amazing place is the Through Grotto. It owes its existence not to water, but to geological forces that displaced layers of limestone. Here they make the most beautiful photos on the Golitsyn path. The restless prince equipped the unique crevice with stairs to the sea and elegant forged doors. Prices for walking the Golitsyn Trail are a controversial issue. For now, tourists continue to be charged for walks without a guide, although on August 5, 2016, the environmental prosecutor’s office ruled that this is illegal.

The Golitsyn trail is quite narrow at the very beginning. In this section it is laid between a sheer cliff on one side and a steep cliff on the other. Here the route is equipped with concrete sides and railings for the safety of tourists.

First stop: Golitsyn's grotto

The first attraction on the trail is Golitsyn (or Chaliapin, as he is also called). A narrow path leads directly to this object. Prince Golitsyn built wine cellars in the grotto. To this day, niches (in the form of hollowed out arches) in the walls, in which exclusive bottles of wine lay, have been preserved. There is also a well in the grotto. Now it is dry, but in Golitsyn’s time there was water in it.

The grotto itself is a small cavity in the coastal rock, formed naturally (by blows sea ​​waves). Its height does not exceed thirty meters, and its width is about 18 meters. Archaeologists have established that in the Middle Ages there was a cave Orthodox monastery here. Ancients wall paintings could have been considered in late XIX centuries. Later, Prince Golitsyn set up his wine library here.

The grotto is also often called Chaliapinsky. In the depths of the rock cavity you can actually see an improvised stone stage. According to some sources, the famous singer Fyodor Chaliapin once performed there. Moreover, his powerful voice, as the legend says, even broke a glass of wine. It is difficult to say that everything was exactly like this, and that the talented performer even visited the New World. Maybe it's just a legend. Nevertheless, musical concerts in Chaliapin's grotto are sometimes held today. The acoustics of this cave are simply excellent!

Second stop: Cape Kapchik

After the Chaliapin grotto, the Golitsyn trail, along the southern slope of Mount Koba-Kaya, leads the traveler to the shores of the Blue Bay. It is also known as Robber's, because during the Ancient Greece Pirate ships were hiding here. From the west, the Blue Bay is bordered by Cape Kapchik, where the route leads further.

From the Turkic language, “kapchik” is an elongated small bag worn on the belt. Kapchik is a cape that is connected to land by a narrow isthmus. At the same time, it separates the Blue and Blue Bays. Cape Kapchik is nothing more than an ancient coral reef. With its silhouette it resembles a giant stone lizard.

The outlines of the cape are very recognizable to many tourists. After all, Kapchik “starred” in a number of Soviet feature films. These are “Pirates of the 20th Century”, “Amphibian Man”, “Treasure Island” and many others. The camp of the main characters of the popular film “Sportloto-82” was also located here.

From Cape Kapchik there is a beautiful view of Tsarsky Beach and Blue Bay - the next stop on the trail.

Third stop: Royal Beach

Having passed Cape Kapchik, the Golitsyn trail leads tourists to the beautiful Blue Bay. It is bounded by Mount Karaul-Oba on one side and the already mentioned cape on the other.

The main attraction of the bay is the so-called Tsarsky Beach. It is called that for a reason: monarchs chose this section of the Crimean coast a very long time ago. Today, Tsarsky Beach is geographically part of the New World nature reserve, so access here is limited.
