A story about your apartment. Description of the apartment in English: grace your house, and not let that grace you

My Flat

We have a nice flat in a new block of flats. Our flat is on the fourth floor. It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water, a lift and a chute to carry rubbish down. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. The living-room is the largest and most comfortable room in the flat. In the middle of the room we have a square-table with six chairs round it. To the right of the dinner-table there is a wall-unit which has several sections: a sideboard, a wardrobe and some shelves.

At the opposite wall there is a piano and stool before it. Between the two large windows there is a little table with a color TV set on it. Near the TV set there are two cozy armchairs. A small round table, a sofa-bed and a standard lamp are in the left-hand corner. This small table is for newspapers and magazines. My father is used to having a rest sitting on this divan-bed reading books, newspapers, magazines or watching TV.

The bedroom is smaller than the living-room and not so light as there is only one window in it. In this room there are two beds with a bedside-table between them. An alarm-clock and a small lamp with a pink lamp-shade are on the table. In the left-hand corner there is a dressing-table with a big mirror.. In this room we have a built-in wardrobe with coat-hangers to-hang clothes on. There is a thick carpet on the floor and plain light-brown curtains on the window.

The third room is my study. It is not large but very cozy. There isn't much furniture in it, only the most necessary. It has a writing-table and an armchair before it. In the right-hand corner there is a bookcase full of books, magazines and newspapers. A small table with a radio is standing in the left-hand corner. Near it there is a sofa with some cushions. In my opinion, the study is the best room in our flat.

But the warmest place in our flat is the kitchen, I think — the place where the whole family gathers every evening not only to have supper together, but also to speak and rest. I like the English proverb: "My home is my castle" because my flat is, indeed, my castle.

My apartment

We have nice apartment in a new apartment building. Our apartment is on the fourth floor, it has all modern amenities: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water, elevator and garbage chute. The apartment has three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a hallway. The living room is the largest and most comfortable room in the apartment. In the center of the room there is a square dining table and six chairs. To the right of the table there is a furniture wall. It consists of several sections: a sideboard, a cabinet, several shelves.

On the opposite side there is a piano with a chair. Between two large windows there is a small table with a color TV. There are two cozy armchairs near the TV. In the left corner there is a small round table, a sofa and a floor lamp. This small table is designed for newspapers and magazines. Dad is used to relaxing, sitting on the sofa, reading books, newspapers, magazines or watching TV.

The bedroom is smaller than the living room and not as bright because it only has one window. In this room there are two beds and a bedside table between them. On the nightstand there is an alarm clock and a small lamp with a pink lampshade. In the left corner - dressing table with a large mirror. This room has a built-in wardrobe with hangers for clothes. There is a thick carpet on the floor, and plain light brown curtains hang on the windows.

The third room is my office. It is small, but very cozy. There is little furniture in it, only the essentials. Here is desk with a chair. In the right corner there is a bookcase with books, magazines, newspapers. Small table with the radio standing in the left corner. Near it there is a sofa with pillows. In my opinion, this office is the best room in our apartment.

But the most warm place in our apartment it is the kitchen, the place where the whole family gathers every evening not only to have dinner together, but also to talk and relax. I like the English proverb: “My home is my castle,” because my apartment is truly my castle.

Each of us strives to have comfortable conditions for accommodation. The place where we sleep, relax, and spend time with family should have a comfortable atmosphere. A corner where we always happily come, where we rush to get after a working day or a long trip, can be both an apartment and a house. In this article we will tell you how to correctly write a description of an apartment on English.

This topic is not quite complicated. The main thing here is to draw up a description of the apartment one by one. If you want to describe all the details of the room, where everything is located, you can look at the article “Room Description”. When writing a story about the place where you live, try to give general information about the house, the rooms, a little about the furnishings. Any description of an apartment in English should begin with a nice introduction about what home means to you. At the end of the essay, you can indicate whether you like or dislike your home, whether you are satisfied or not, what you would like to change.

First of all I should say that I like my house. I agree with the conclusion that any home reflects the personality of his owner and his habits. Clothes you wear or food you buy and eat are reflection as well. So, we can make up a conclusion about a man looking at his house.

I prefer a comfortable life. I think it is necessary to have everything modern conveniences. It makes life easier, more enjoyable and pleasant. But the atmosphere is more important than conditions. I'd like to say some words about my flat.

We are a family of three. We live in a new five-storyed block of flats. Our flat is on the 5th floor. It is very comfortable. When you enter the flat you can see a small entrance hall. On the right side you can see a closet Then there is a corridor which is much larger than hall. On the left there is a bathroom and a lavatory in the corridor. On the opposite side you are welcome to my room. Walking along the corridor you will come to the kitchen. It is our dining and living room. My parent’s bedroom is on the left from the kitchen. We have all modern conveniences such as cold and hot running water, gas, electricity, central heating, a telephone and a chute.

Our living room is the largest one. It overlooks a park. The window is very large and there is much sunshine in the room. There you can see a sofa, a bookcase, a TV set and two armchairs. There are two pictures on the wall. If you look at the dining part of the room you will see a unit of modern furniture here such as a cooker, a refrigerator, a cupboard, a microwave. We have a table and four chairs. There is much light. My bedroom is not large. There is a sofa, a wardrobe, a table and a chair. There is a computer on the table. Near the table there are some bookshelves. I have a small carpet at my sofa where our dog sleeps. My parents' room is more spacious than mine. There is a large doublebed, a wardrobe, a dresser and a large mirror. Our bathroom and our lavotary are separated. They are not large but very convenient. There is a sink, a bath-tab, a mirror and a set of shelves where we keep our tooth-brushes, creams, shampoos and make-up.

So, I want to finish with the proverb: " Men make houses women make homes". I agree with these words and in my family it is really true. My mother makes a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. My father renovates the flat from time to time. But all of us try to keep it clean.

To begin describing the apartment in English, let's try to understand what a home means for a true lady or gentleman. There is no place like home, the English say, which loosely translated means: “ No room better at home " For the British, the house, since the times of knightly deeds in the name of a beautiful lady, has always been a fortress, a home, and a sanctuary. They still say that their house is the most reliable fortification, since the right to property in English-speaking countries is unshakable.

The description of the apartment in English with translation will be slightly different in different English-speaking countries, but the main aspects remain traditional since ancient times. The British will name the apartment a flat, which will mean a room usually located on one floor of an apartment building. Any apartment has walls - walls, ceiling - ceiling, floor - floor, windows - windows, doors - doors. It is customary to lay carpets on the floors - carpets, and hang curtains on the windows - curtains or blinds - louvre shutter.

So which floor is considered first?

A very important point: residents of Great Britain number their homes, starting from the second floor, which is familiar to us (it is the first for them). Their lowest floor is called a ground floor, which causes some confusion. When translating into Russian, we have to call the British first floor “our” second, the second - the third, etc.

For a Briton, something like the following question is common: “I wonder if you live in a house or in a flat” - “I wonder if you live in an apartment or in a house.” But own houses they are usually located on two or even three levels, not counting the basement - basement.

Flat or Apartment?

Apartment in English is flat, although Americans call it apartment. By analogy with the British version (flat), this room is usually located on one floor. The word "apartment" is typical of large, richly furnished rooms in luxurious British mansions and is used in plural: apartments. In Russia, apartments on two or three levels are sometimes called apartments, but this does not apply to either the UK or the USA. Penthouses are being built in the USA - penthouses- These are single-family houses on the roofs of skyscrapers or smaller apartment buildings. Such buildings are only available to very rich people, so if you are lucky enough to visit there, it will be quite nice.

What's behind the hallway?

You know what an apartment sounds like in English, and now it's time to move on to the names of the premises. When entering a British apartment, you will find yourself in a hallway - hall where the mirror will hang (or stand) - mirror and there is a wardrobe - walk-in closet. Unlike the British, Americans are not obsessed with hallways, and their detached houses are not built from such solid materials.

Depending on the layout, you will alternately enter other rooms. In the kitchen - kitchen- you will find kitchen cabinets(kitchen built-in cabinets), a kitchen stove- kitchen stove, a micro-wave oven- microwave oven.

Moving into the living room, you will find a wall-unit- a wall of furniture, a large table for dinner parties - table, chairs- chairs, cozy armchairs - arm-chairs, sofa- sofa.

Depending on the wealth of the residents, an English apartment (usually a house) has several bedrooms - bedrooms where they can stand single bed- single bed, or double bed- double furniture for relaxation. A British-style bathroom is bathroom, for Americans this is a toilet.

Apartment in English is both written and almost pronounced in both the British and American versions, with the exception of the peculiarities of reading the letter a And r.

A vacuum cleaner will help you tidy up your apartment - vacuum-cleaner, an air conditioner will help bring the air condition to the required level - air conditioner, heater- a heater will provide warmth in the room.

Address in English: house apartment street

If you are going to give your address in English, you will have to go from "small to large", and not vice versa, as in Russia. English-speaking people will first report the apartment and house number, then the street, city and country of departure of the postal item. They also have an identification number similar to our index.

It is very useful to look at a drawing of an apartment with furniture for an English lesson. In a cross-section of a typical British apartment you will see all the main pieces of furniture with captions. Find out the approximate location of the premises. We are sure that, having visited the British, you will not find yourself in an awkward position.
