Online testing in English. Online English tests

This page contains interesting tests on English language– both my writing and from other sites. The tests are divided into two sections. “Author's tests” are tests of my essay. They are not only about knowledge of words and grammar, but also about other topics related to English. “Tests to test your knowledge” are interesting tests from other sites.

English tests to assess your knowledge

If you've recently started learning English, it won't hurt to evaluate your existing knowledge. Even if you think that you have absolutely “zero” English, you probably know some words.

1. Puzzle English Vocabulary Test

Many beginners (and not only) are interested in finding out what their vocabulary. Vocabulary assessment is imprecise, but you can get approximate numbers. When taking this test, you need to tick the words that you easily recognize. As a result, you will be shown approximately how many words you know, as well as an honesty index. If you did not try to outsmart the teacher, then the index will be 100%.

2. LinguaLeo vocabulary test

Another option for the vocabulary test is that you can take both and compare the results.

Author's tests in English

This section contains English tests that I wrote myself and published on my blog in different times. If this is not your first time on this site, you probably know that I sometimes come up with and publish tests. I try to make the test not only educational, but also interesting.

These tests are not exactly what can be seen in textbooks, I would even say that not all of them can be called tests in the English language, sometimes they are quizzes on related topics.

I select different topics: here there are both the usual tests on knowledge of words and grammar, as well as more original ones, for example, a test where you need to guess which movie the quote is from.

1.

This test included common english words, taken by me from, however they are sometimes used in unusual meanings.

In addition, in the tasks there are “false friends of the translator” - words that are similar in spelling and sound, but different in meaning.

This test has already been passed more than 10 thousand times, the average result is 4.9 points out of 8.

2.

This test includes easy questions on topics from school curriculum in English, but some of them may turn out to be much more insidious than they seem. Be careful!

The average result is 4.6 out of 7.

3.

Phrasal verbs are very interesting topic in English, but certainly not the simplest one. They are very common in colloquial speech, they are often difficult to remember due to their illogicality (this does not apply to all phrasal verbs), and they often have several meanings.

If desired, one could find rare phrasal verbs and make them monstrously difficult test, but I decided to do not too difficult tasks, just to show how interesting this topic is!

The average result is 5.1 points out of 7.

4.

Have you ever read poems by Russian poets translated into English? It sounds very unusual, and sometimes funny!

But poetic translation is a very difficult thing. It is impossible to both preserve the original form and accurately convey the meaning, so the poems are greatly distorted in translation.

I have selected nine very well translated passages from Russian poetry. Can you guess the author?

The average result is 4.8 out of 9.

And it seems that I did not include porcupine, wapiti, tupaya or other exotic animals (which sometimes you don’t even know in Russian), but I DO NOT guarantee that you will easily complete the task.

The average result is 4.7 out of 7.

7.

Not the easiest test on the topic of US states. You may not pass it perfectly, but you will learn something new! After the test there is an article about US states with electronic flashcards for remembering states and their capitals.

The average result is 4 out of 6.

8.

US cities are a tricky topic. History, geography, local traditions and cultural characteristics are intertwined here.

With this simple test you can test how well you know US cities, or discover something new!

Reviews:

Thank you for making this English test available online! It was sent to me by a friend who, having accurately determined her level, managed to prepare and got a job in a Western company. I was also about to have an interview in English at a Western company. I was very worried, and I needed to be convinced of my abilities, since I had not practiced the language for a very long time. To my surprise, at the interview I came across an almost identical test. I passed it with ease. Thank you! Svetlana, Moscow

I am grateful to fate that I came across this particular test to test my English at a recruitment agency! I had previously completed it and already knew the correct answers. Maxim, St. Petersburg

I was going to send my daughter to study in the UK. We visited many schools and several tutors, some of them offered this particular English language test to determine the level. Experience has shown that this test has proven to be the most accurate in assessing the level of English language proficiency. When my daughter took a test at school in England, she said that she had almost the same one. Thank you! Nina, Russia
