How to make karting blueprints. Homemade clear karting

Karting is a mechanized vehicle that is capable of reaching high speeds in a relatively short period of time. There are professional karts that are used for racing purposes. However, a primitive version can be done without leaving home.

How to assemble a go-kart with your own hands at home?

The simplest karting consists of the following elements: an engine, a reinforced frame, and a reliable braking system. For the manufacture of the frame, it is necessary to purchase medium alloy steel. This material has high strength, low weight and is easy to process. Similar steel is used for the manufacture of bicycles, handrails in public transport.

The diameter should not exceed 35 mm, and the wall thickness should not exceed 2 mm. Such restrictions are due to the fact that the kart engine will have little power. Therefore, the maximum lightening of the structure will benefit the future vehicle. Pipes are bent without pre-treatment using a conventional pipe bender.

It is also important to keep in mind that when planning the construction of a kart, special attention should be paid to the joints: the places where the “driven” pipes are connected to the “leading” ones. In this case, the ends of the "driven" pipes must be turned along the radius of the guide elements of the frame. In addition to medium alloy steel, duralumin profiles can be used. They cost an order of magnitude more expensive, but their use will increase the stability of the kart in a collision with a fence.

How to make a homemade muffler from trash: drawings and wiring diagram

The length of the muffler depends on the engine power. When using a motor from a chainsaw or a motorboat, an exhaust pipe made in the form of an ellipse will do. Before making a caracas, it is necessary to make a cardboard form of the future muffler. Starting from this shape, using stainless steel sheets, you can weld the exhaust pipe.

Video review of do-it-yourself karting

After that, evenly spaced holes should be drilled. They are necessary for the release of exhaust gases into the atmosphere. Depending on the power of the engine, the number of such holes also varies. When using steel, it is better to choose models whose thickness does not exceed 1 mm. The finished structure is attached to the outlet of the internal combustion chamber with two bolts. A hole for them must be prepared in advance.

How to attach a mini clutch to a chainsaw engine?

In order for the kart to work with the engine running at idle, a clutch must be connected to it. In addition, the clutch will allow you to start the kart from a place, and not from the “pusher”. The pedal is located on a steel frame to the left of the steering wheel. You can make the pedal design yourself or take it ready-made in an old domestic car.

Fastening is carried out using a small cable. The clutch is engaged and disengaged in the same way as a car. The cable must be tensioned so that it does not accidentally break. Otherwise, when driving or ramming, the pedal will fail. With this design, it is impossible to get out of the car without turning off the engine.

Making a kart brake

Given the low engine power, the brakes can be made from improvised materials. If there is no experience in designing a brake system, then it is better to take ready-made drum brakes of domestic cars. The brake disc is first attached to the wheelbase of the kart. This system is connected to the engine by transmission belts. In normal driving (no brakes), the belts should simply slide from the engine to the wheelbase.

The location of the brakes depends on the drive of the kart. When using the front drive wheels, the brake system must block the free running of the kart. To prevent the driver from flying out of the seat, it is recommended to install metal rods and guide fists along with the brakes. They contribute to softer and smoother braking in critical situations.

Electric Steering Wheel and Karting Wheels: Installation Guide

The easiest thing is to install the steering wheel. It is enough to remove the finished mechanism from an old domestic car (for example, Zhiguli). It is also necessary to take ready-made gears from this car so that you do not have to design them yourself. They are attached at the very end of the steering wheel using bushings and bolts. When the gear rotates, the gear rack starts to move, which distributes the force between the drive wheels.

As for the manufacture of electric steering, it is necessary to leave room for a small battery in the design of the kart. Electric motors are attached to it, which are installed at the joints between the steering beam and the drive wheel axle. In this case, you do not have to exert much effort when driving and sharp turns.

Features of manufacturing seat for karting

Seats play a special role. Under special operating conditions of karting (the engine is located outside, the seat is fastened with primitive bolts to a light frame), it is important to choose a seat that meets all safety requirements. For this purpose, you can make the seat yourself. This will require plywood (up to 6 mm thick), furniture foam, leatherette. Foam rubber or polyurethane is attached to pre-marked and cut plywood (depending on the budget). The whole structure is covered with leatherette, and on top it is wrapped with a special mesh (kapron, as usual).

To prevent particles of mesh or leatherette from getting into the moving elements of the kart, if possible, they should be fitted with protective covers. First of all, it concerns the drive chain. In order to increase the comfort of karting, it is recommended to equip it with a parking brake. This will increase the safety of driving a homemade kart when entering sharp turns.

The final stage is the painting of all visible parts of the mechanisms. They must first be treated against corrosion. When applying paintwork, it is recommended to use a spray gun.

Making a kart with your own hands is not so easy. Crafting kits and ready-made materials are not so cheap. And drawings are sometimes difficult to find, and certain details are not always available. In this article, we will try to figure out how to make a go-kart with our own hands, where to get the parts and materials necessary for this, and also try to figure out how to draw up a drawing for making a go-kart.

Where to get the necessary materials.

To make a kart with your own hands, you need to decide on the materials and their availability. If there is a metal collection point or some kind of auto-dismantling near you, then some of the parts can be purchased there.

  • Pedals
  • pedal mounting block
  • steering shaft
  • tie rods
  • axle shafts
  • steering knuckles
  • pins
  • disc brake master and slave cylinders
  • armchair

Basically, all the details can be removed from old Soviet cars, it is better to take a chair from a foreign car because it will be more comfortable. When buying parts, you should pay attention to their condition - the steering knuckles and the kingpin must rotate without jamming, the brake cylinders must not leak, and the rest of the parts are not rusty.

At the metal collection point, you can search for the following details:

  • gears
  • metal pipes, strips, corners
  • motor
  • wheels
  • bearings

We develop a scheme

When all the details are assembled, we proceed to the development of the scheme. There is no general concept for the size and shape of karting, so everyone does what he likes. The decisive argument here is the availability of parts. However, it is worth considering the height of the pilot; for tall people, the cards should be longer. If you find a car seat with a sled, then you can make a long kart with adjustable distance to the pedals.

For greater simplicity, we take any drawing found on the Internet and customize it to fit our materials and assemblies. When developing the scheme, it is necessary to take into account the dimensions of the pivots, the methods of installing the brake cylinders and the features of fastening the seat to the frame.

It is necessary to take into account the method of fastening the steering rods to the steering pendulum. On most homemade karts, the tie rods are made from a steel bar with a diameter of 8-15mm, and the pendulum from a plate 5-7mm thick. This scheme will not allow you to adjust the toe-in, so there is a high probability of rapid tire wear.

Therefore, by welding, we combine them with tie rod ends from the car, this will allow us to change the toe angle.

Steering and power unit

As a power unit, a chainsaw motor is not the best option, because it can be used to make a drive with only one gear. This is not convenient, because there is no adjustment of the ratio of the drive / driven gear, the torque of the wheels will be the same with constant movement and acceleration.

The best option would be a motor from a scooter or an old Soviet Ant scooter or its analogues. Fortunately, there should not be any special problems with the purchase of such a unit. To increase torque during acceleration, if we use a gearbox from a moped, we will have to install a gear selector and a clutch pedal .. For a scooter engine, these operations are not needed, because it uses a variable speed transmission.

To create steering, the axle shafts of rear-wheel drive vehicles and the tip of the steering shaft are best suited.

We cut off the tip and weld it to the axle shaft. Next, the axle shaft is cut to the desired length, and at the other end we weld the steering column pendulum. Using a bolt or welding, we fasten the steering rods to the pendulum, install one from below, the other from above. In order for the shaft with the steering wheel not to dangle, we fix it with two semi-axle bearings. In order to fix the bearings, we use standard axle shaft bushings, which will have to be heated to a temperature of 500 degrees. At any auto-dismantling, we find the main and working cylinders of the front brakes from the Soviet Zhiguli or Lad (because brake mechanisms from sports bikes are more difficult to find, and they will cost much more).

If the brake disc turns out to be large, then we use a substitute, for example, the final drive flange or a flat gear welded to the axle shaft. With small loads and low speed of rotation of the axle shaft, the flange will work for a long time.

For the front axle, a kingpin assembly with a steering knuckle from GAZ 21, 24 cars is better suited. But for them it is necessary to install car seats at least from Oka.

In the case of small wheels, you will have to cut off the kingpin and steering knuckle bearings, then make a new assembly and attach the wheel hub to it.

Kart assembly.

If all the drawings, units and small parts are ready to create a do-it-yourself kart, then you can start assembling.

For installation, we use a welding inverter with electrodes with a diameter of 2-3 mm. Each seam should be carefully checked. If you do not know how to cook, it is better to contact a familiar welder. Although this will increase costs, homemade karting will turn out to be more durable.

At the end of the installation of the frame, you should process all the seams with a grinder and a cleaning disk, then paint it. After the paint has dried, proceed to install the wheels. During the installation of the rear wheels, we weld brake discs, a pulley and a final drive gear on the axle shaft.

Next, we move on to steering. It is important to pay attention to the fact that the play does not exceed 5mm. Otherwise, the cards will be thrown from side to side. Then we proceed to install the brake. When using automotive brakes, remember to connect the cylinders with steel or copper tubes located on top of the frame. Next, fill them with brake fluid and pump. It is not recommended to place the tubes from below, in this case there is a high probability of damage to them, which will lead to brake failure.

If you use brake actuators from small vehicles or scooters, you will have to be smart.

To check the steering and brake systems, install the seat. Ask a friend to push you. If the systems are working properly, then proceed to the installation of the drive and motor. We fix the motor according to the previously developed scheme. Next, we connect the fuel tank, the accelerometer rod and the off button.

Carefully check the operation of all kart systems! If everything is fine, then spend the first test drive. It should be remembered that you assembled the go-kart with your own hands, so you can only ride it on special tracks!

Nothing quenches the thirst for speed like acceleration in a kart. You can assemble it with your own hands from a set of spare parts or from a sketch - this will be an exciting and fun garage project for amateur mechanics of any age. Depending on what tools are available, you can learn how to design a cool kart yourself, weld the chassis correctly and achieve a powerful move. See step 1 for more details.

Steps

Part 1

Design

Draw a detailed diagram of the future karting. It can be of various sizes, shapes, models. Almost any element can be added to the design of these homemade machines. The basis is the chassis, simple engine and steering/braking system.

    • Get creative with project planning and draw a detailed diagram to make sure you have enough materials to complete the job. Look at other kart models for inspiration, talk to mechanics who already have experience building karts.
    • In addition, you can find schematics for many different models on the Internet if you'd rather leave the design to someone else. Use the template by modifying it to your liking.
  1. Carefully work out the dimensions of the kart. They are determined by the age and height of the driver. For teenagers, the dimensions are 0.76 meters wide and 1.3 meters long, for adults - 1 meter wide and 1.8 meters long.

    • It is very important to design the kart as accurately as possible using specific measurements, otherwise it will be difficult to choose the right materials and their quantity.
  2. Gather materials. If you're on a budget, look for inexpensive parts in a junkyard. Or you can use salvageable parts from an old lawn mower or broken go-karts from a flea market. Lawn mower repair shops can give you junk parts or broken trimmers, as well as a used 10-15 horsepower four-stroke engine with a horizontal shaft and a clutch drive. Here's what you'll need:

    • For Chassis:
      • 9.2 meters of 2.5 cm square pipe
      • 1.8 meters of 2cm round steel pipe
      • 1.8 meters of 1.5 cm pipe
      • Steel plate 0.5 cm thick, slightly larger in width and length than the engine
      • Plywood or metal (for seat and bottom)
      • Seat
    • For engine:
      • Engine (you can take the engine of an old gasoline trimmer)
      • Chain to match sprocket hub
      • Bolts, washers
      • Fuel tank
    • For transmission:
      • wheels
      • Gearbox and handbrake
      • Drive shaft
      • Bearings
      • steering shaft
      • Brake pedal
      • Throttle/gas pedal
  3. Get a welding machine. If you do not know how to cook, you will need to hire a welder. The most important part of karting is a strong chassis that will hold you as you ride. They also house the engine. If you intend to make a chassis from several pieces, welding must be carried out at a sufficiently high temperature and penetration rate, with neat welds. Otherwise, the elements may not weld well, and the welds will appear bubbles, cracks and / or they will be strong only in appearance, which will turn your kart into a death machine.

    • If you've never welded before, don't start by assembling a kart. Start with small items to practice.
  4. Consider purchasing a set of kart parts. If you are not interested in inventing and welding kart parts yourself, buy a constructor with detailed instructions and diagrams, which you can easily assemble without welding using simple tools.

    • The pleasure of building a kart yourself without the hassle of designing a model and sourcing materials will set you back about $550.

    Part 2

    Chassis and steering column assembly
    1. Cut the metal pipe into lengths according to your drawings.

      • On most models, the front camber angle is narrower than the rear, allowing the wheels to turn, allowing the chassis to turn slightly. To achieve this, reinforce the pivot at the front corners, where the wheels will be, to allow for easy rolling.
      • To make it easier to navigate in size, you can draw marks with chalk on the floor where you work, and do not take measurements every time again. You can even draw the whole model on the floor and lay out the details on top of it.
    2. Weld the frame elements in accordance with the diagram. Press down the parts with a concrete slab while welding, make sure the welds are holding well and the chassis is secure. They must be strong enough to support your weight and the weight of the engine, so welding cannot be done randomly. To increase strength, insert wedges at all corners. Use concrete blocks to secure the frame in an elevated position while working.

Assemble the front axle caps. Make an axle from a strong metal rod with a diameter of 2 cm and two bushings attached to the frame. Fasten the structure with washers and cotter pins by screwing them into the axle.

Install the rear axle of the wheelset. Most likely, you will need to attach the axle holder with a support bracket to the rear axle, that is, the axle will be welded to the frame, but will be able to rotate freely. Weld the steel plate to the chassis by reinforcing the pressure plate from the outside with high strength bolts and machine nuts to press the bearing.

      • Instead of doing it yourself, you can purchase ready-made structures, which are called "bearing units".
    3. From plywood or metal, make the seat and bottom of the kart. To save money, you can use a kart seat that has fallen into disrepair, or find a suitable-sized car seat in a junkyard, or make one from a simple seat with a cushion for support. Leave room for the steering wheel and control levers.

    Part 3

Installing the engine and steering column
    1. Install the engine mounts. Weld a steel plate to the back of the frame to strengthen the engine. Place the motor on the plate and mark the holes where the bolts will be inserted so that the motor pulley aligns with the work pulley on the axle.

      • Attach the pulley to the axle before inserting the axle into the bushings. You can also use a set screw to reinforce the pulley or weld it directly to the axle, but it must lie in line with the motor pulley.
    2. Assemble the steering gear. Use a 1.5 cm steel rod for the drive and 2 cm for the axles. To bend a 1.5 cm rod at a right angle, you may need to use a soldering iron to heat the steel.

      • Adjustable joints are needed to align the handlebars, because it is very important to correctly adjust the camber and toe: the vertical of the front wheel and the steering angle.
    3. Install wheels and brakes. Take small racing wheels to give your kart optimal acceleration and control. Attach them to the axles and proceed to install the brakes to secure the kart.

      • To install the brakes, attach the disc to the rear axle and the caliper assembly to the chassis - it's the most professional system you can make. Sometimes this mechanism in relatively good condition can be found in broken motorcycles. They fit true to size and will be easy to work with.
      • Install a foot brake pedal no matter what type of accelerator you have. Leave driving and a minimum of other actions to your hands.
    4. This kart assumes the use of a centrifugal clutch, but modifications may include a tensioner belt drive system or a hand or foot controlled gas/clutch pedal.
    5. There is no accelerator in the mechanism, which can also be added using a simple lawn mower cable, or a more complex foot gas pedal.
    6. This manual assumes that the mechanic will use junk parts from broken lawn mowers and other sources. It will probably be cheaper to buy a ready-made kart than to assemble it from new purchased parts.
    7. The price of the simplest card reaches 60-70 dollars, if not more. A good set of models can be purchased for about $40, some even cheaper. The price of the drawings is a little less than $80. Might be worth considering if you're not a pro.
    8. It is often recommended to purchase a blueprint set of well-designed and well-thought-out models, incorporating tried and tested motoring principles: Ackermann angles, castor, kingpin tilt, and so on. You are more likely to finish building and enjoy your kart if you build it from a good blueprint.
    9. Warnings

    • Check the kart before hitting the track as parts may come off or break.
    • Since the model is simple, without high-tech engineering and design solutions, it is not recommended to use a high gear ratio or a large motor. Speeds above 15-25 km / h can cause insufficiently well-designed elements to fail.
    • Wear protection while driving - helmets, pads, and so on.
    • This is not a real car, and under no circumstances should it be used on the road!

Today, one of the hobbies of both adults and children is karting. These small, but at the same time fast cars, allow you to get not only the first driving skills, but also an unforgettable impression of the race on the kart track. It is quite possible to design such a machine for everyone at home. To make a go-kart with your own hands, consider the drawings with dimensions and a step-by-step assembly guide.

Drawing development

Most often, the defining moment of the future design is the presence of certain details.

If a seat with a sled from a car was purchased as a chair, then the kart can be made long and the distance to the pedal assembly can be adjusted. Thus, people of any height will be able to comfortably get behind the wheel.

As a basis, you can take any scheme that you can find. It is customized to fit their parts and assemblies. It's much easier than making a drawing from scratch. In the case of developing a scheme, it is necessary to take into account the features of fastening the seat to the chassis, methods of fixing the brake system cylinders, and the parameters of the pivots. Particular attention should be paid to the fastening of the steering rods to the pendulum. Often, a metal rod with a cross section of 4-15 mm is used for the manufacture of rods. A metal plate of 5-7 mm is used as a pendulum.

Preparation of materials and parts

When all the preliminary calculations have been carried out, it remains to select the necessary parts, after which you can assemble the structure. If finances allow, almost any parts and mechanisms can be purchased at the store. In a different situation, you can try to find details in the old pieces of iron in your garage or barn.

To design components and systems of a sports car, you will need the following parts and assemblies:

  • chassis. It is assembled from a profile metal pipe 25 * 20 mm. A plate 5 mm thick is welded under the engine mount in the rear of the frame, which should be slightly larger than the size of the motor;
  • power unit. This mechanism can be taken, for example, from an old lawn mower or a moped. In order to be able to transmit torque to the rear axle, you will need a chain that will fit the selected star. Additionally, you will need a fuel tank and fasteners;
  • transmission. For its design, a large number of parts are prepared: wheels, steering wheel, gearbox, steering shaft, bearings, pedals. Many use wheels from a scooter, a small steering wheel from a car, pedals are made of metal.

The main tool for assembling the machine is a welding machine. If you do not have experience with this device, then it is better to seek the help of a specialist. Since the basis of the card is the frame, welding of its elements must be carried out with deep penetration of the metal. The seams must be made even and neat. If the welding is unreliable, the contact between the elements will be poor, and cracks may appear at the joints, which will make the operation of such a tool quite dangerous.

Karting production

When everything you need is prepared, you can begin to assemble the structure. Consider a detailed description of the installation.

Chassis mounting

The chassis is assembled according to the drawing. It is better to prepare it in 1:1 scale on graph paper. The pipe is cut into pieces in accordance with the scheme. Weld all elements of the frame. To increase the strength, wedges are inserted at the corners.

Then attach the front axle plugs. For its manufacture, a metal pipe with a cross section of 20 mm is used, which is attached to the load-bearing structure by means of two bushings. The connection is made by means of bolts. Plugs are mounted before starting work with the steering mechanism.

Having figured out how to make the front axle, go to the rear. It is mounted in such a way that it is welded to the frame, but at the same time rotates without difficulty. This is achieved by fixing the support bracket of the holder to the rear axis. After that, a metal plate is welded to the chassis, reinforced with a bolted connection so that the bearing is pressed securely.

They make the bottom and mount the seat of a sports car, for which metal and plywood are used. The chair is made so that when cornering, the driver sits confidently in it and does not fall out, as can be seen from the photo.

They also leave room for the steering wheel, pedal mechanism and levers.

Motor installation

Depending on the engine used, some modifications may be required, such as the removal of unnecessary elements. The drive from the motor is made chain, which will require the installation or alteration of the sprocket.

To mount the engine behind the frame, a plate is welded. The motor is placed so that its pulley is aligned with the pulley on the axle. Make markings for bolts. After that, the steering gear is assembled: a metal rod with a diameter of 20 mm is used for the axles, and 15 mm for the drive. The latter must be bent at an angle of 90 °. To align the steering wheel, use special connections that allow you to set the wheel alignment.

Install brakes and wheels. The latter is better to use a small size, which will provide good acceleration. Attach wheels to axles.

To increase safety, it is advisable to put brake discs on each wheel. Brakes can be supplied from the motorcycle. Mount the brake pedal so that your hands are free.

Connect the ignition and hand throttle. Gas can be controlled by foot or as on a lawn mower.

After reviewing the manual for making a go-kart with your own hands and having examined the drawings with dimensions, it will be much easier to design a machine. If you have the skills to work with welding, then such a design will not cause any difficulties. The main thing is to get the right parts and allocate time to assemble such a vehicle.

If your household has an old bicycle, preferably made in the USSR, a broken chainsaw with a “live” motor, a couple of pipes - all this rubbish can be usefully adapted. How? It is very simple - to make a bicycle with a motor from a chainsaw with your own hands. Having spent a little effort, you can get a completely normal vehicle - in all respects it will be inferior to a car, but it will be able to deliver you from point A to point B for a short distance, and gasoline consumption will be simply meager.

We make a motorbike with our own hands

So, how to make a moped out of a chainsaw with your own hands? To do this, you do not need to have a higher technical education and have a mobile workshop at hand - the necessary minimum of tools, a working motor from a chainsaw of almost any brand and a bicycle frame, preferably made of metal tubes, are enough to withstand the load from the engine.

Motor selection

There is nothing complicated about how to make a bike with a chainsaw motor, no. But you need to understand that the motor will not work from a light chainsaw that is used for small jobs - its power must be at least 2 hp. or 1.5 kW. But as for the volume, the situation here is exactly the opposite - the volume should not exceed 50 cm3, otherwise it will violate the provisions of the Vienna Convention. And so for such a vehicle, no rights and registration are needed, since this vehicle is defined as a “bike with an outboard engine”.

Frame hardware

A homemade moped from a chainsaw is made from a bicycle in any, even in the most “killed” state - the main thing is that there is a whole frame. The engine from the chainsaw is installed on the bike at the junction of the lower and seat tubes - this is the best way to locate it. A gas tank is screwed next to it, and a battery is installed above the engine, on the top pipe. You need to install the engine from the chainsaw so that it is fixed firmly and securely - the motor is subject to vibration and if it is loosely fixed, it will fall.

If there is no frame from the finished bike, it can be easily welded - this requires several pipes and a welding machine. It’s even better - such a do-it-yourself chainsaw motorbike will be more durable and reliable, and a self-welded frame will allow you to position the motor as close to the drive wheel as possible.

Transmission

Just putting the motor from the chainsaw on the bike is not enough - you need to make sure that the torque from the motor is transmitted to the wheels. For this, pulleys or a chain mechanism are used:

  1. Pulley system. In this embodiment, the engine from the chainsaw on the bike will transmit torque through the belt. Such a system is simpler - it uses factory or home-made pulleys, one on the engine shaft, the second on the rear wheel hub, as well as a tension belt. Minus - the belt stretches faster than the chain and is less durable, although V-belts are not inferior to chains in durability.
  2. Chain transmission. Here you can use a rear sprocket, and install a gear on the motor shaft. The transmission of torque occurs through the chain - it is more durable and resistant to stress, but requires regular maintenance. Choose for yourself how to make a bike with a chainsaw motor, or rather, which transmission to install on it.

Motor connection

Do-it-yourself chainsaw scooter will not go if the engine is not connected in the right way. To do this, you must connect the battery to the engine ignition unit, as well as to the brake lever. Set the connecting cable so that it can be easily wound using the handle. The last step is to install the exhaust pipe - you don’t have to install it, but in this case, the chainsaw scooter will “please” the exhaust right in the face.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated about how to put a chainsaw engine on a bicycle - here you need to make only a little effort and have the necessary minimum of spare parts and assemblies. But such a self-propelled mechanism will go a little faster than a conventional bicycle. But homemade chainsaw karts are a completely different level. With the right approach, you can arrange real races, so let's look below at how to make a go-kart from a chainsaw with your own hands.

Homemade kart with a chainsaw engine

The main difference between a chainsaw kart and a motorbike is that it is designed for higher speeds, therefore it has a more rigid four-wheel structure. Therefore, the most important element is not the motor, but the frame - it will have to be made by hand, and not just bolted together, but welded.

Body

  1. For the frame, it is recommended to use a square or round tube - it has a higher bending resistance and rigidity than a regular profile or angle. In general, you need to use several sizes: a thick pipe with a diameter of 25 mm for the chassis beams, a 20 mm round timber for the frame and engine carrier, a 15-20 pipe for the seat and other components.
  2. Draw a drawing of your future kart, take careful measurements, and only then start doing karting with a chainsaw engine. There are many different templates on the web. Recommended parameters are from 1300 to 1800 mm long, from 760 to 1000 mm wide. The center distance is approximately ¾ of the total length of the kart.
  3. Start assembling. The design should not be purely welded - for example, the rear axle should be movable and rotate freely, so it will have to be mounted through a support bracket. Otherwise, a chainsaw kart will turn very badly and have insufficient controllability. You can not bother and buy ready-made bearing units - it will be easier and more reliable.
  4. We make a seat. Here, too, it is not as simple as it seems - when passing a sharp turn, the driver can easily fall out of the seat. You can use a homemade seat made of metal or plywood - the main thing is that it provides a snug fit.

Motor and transmission

Choosing a motor is a simple matter. The more powerful the motor, the faster the homemade chainsaw kart will go. Power of 2-3 hp it will be enough to accelerate to 20-30 km / h - more is not required from such equipment. By the way, you can make a go-kart from a chainsaw or a trimmer.

  1. Before installing the motor, prepare a platform at the rear of the frame on which the motor will be installed.
  2. Drill holes in the motor housing for the fasteners, which will match the holes on the platform.
  3. The motor pulley must necessarily coincide on the axis with the working pulley.
  4. The asterisk can be used from the chainsaw itself, but you have to grind it a little.
  5. A chain is used for transmission, but in some cases it is possible to use a pulley with a V-belt - it is cheaper, and in many respects it is not inferior to the chain.
  6. Place a gas tank next to the engine - a plastic or metal container with a volume of 2-3 liters.

Control and braking system

  1. The pedal assembly is made simply. Cut out models of pedals from a metal sheet, a metal pond of 8-10 mm is used for the legs. Lay the control cables so that they do not interfere under your feet and lay flat - otherwise, the cable may break.
  2. The brake must be a foot brake. You can of course make it manual, but this will only complicate the design. The brake disc must be attached directly to the frame, and the brake caliper to the wheel. In a home-made version of karting with a chainsaw engine, you can install brakes only on the rear drive wheels, but if you are making a “high-speed” version, put the brakes on the front axle as well.
  3. Steering. One of the most difficult moments is to make the front wheels turn. Here you will have to use swivel brackets to which you need to attach the steering rack. The rail itself is connected to a thick rod, on top of which the steering wheel itself is put on.

Chassis

For the chassis, you can use any wheels that are at hand. The front ones can be taken with a smaller diameter, and the rear ones with a larger one. But at the same time, estimate the power of the motor - if the motor is weak, then there is simply not enough torque. So here it is necessary to find out everything experimentally. As a rule, the diameter of the wheels does not exceed 250-400 mm.

Chainsaw ATV

Another option for motorcycles that you can do with your own hands is a small ATV for a child or teenager. In fact, the technology by which a home-made children's ATV is made from a chainsaw is practically the same as that used to create a kart. But there are a few features:

  • The do-it-yourself ATV chainsaw frame has a slightly different design - it is more complex, tall and massive.
  • For the power unit, the most powerful motor is used. Usually, motorcycle motors are installed for such equipment, but you can make a home-made children's ATV from a chainsaw - you only need a little refinement in the form of a gearbox or an intermediate shaft to increase traction and torque.
  • Due to the peculiarities of the landing, a chair from a moped or motorcycle is installed - it will be more convenient than a chair with a back, as in karting.
  • A do-it-yourself children's ATV from a chainsaw is better than a kart in terms of cross-country ability, so wheels of increased diameter are used for it. Their diameter should be at least 350-500 mm, preferably with a developed tread. Otherwise, it will not be an ATV, but the same kart.
  • If possible, you can install shock absorbers in the suspension - so you will achieve a smoother and softer ride.

In all other respects, the design of the children's ATV repeats the technological solutions used for the manufacture of karting.

Today, a huge number of children and even adults are passionate about karting. These nimble, fast cars allow you to get driving skills, as well as feel the adrenaline rush during fast-paced trips around the kart track. But many hobbyists cannot or simply do not want to buy a kart, they want to build it themselves. And it is quite possible to do so.

Where to begin

Before starting work, it is necessary to purchase the necessary materials and assemblies, which are difficult to manufacture on their own. For this, there are special kits that include wheels, chassis and steering parts and other small components. You will need pipes from which the frame and sheet metal will be made. From the tools you will need a set of keys, screwdrivers, a pipe bender, a hammer, pliers, etc. You will definitely need a welding machine and the services of a specialist welder.

Making a layout

At the next stage, according to the drawing, a karting frame layout is made on cardboard. According to the layout, pipes of a given length are cut, which are fastened with welding seams; if necessary, they can be bent using a pipe bender. On the resulting frame, you need to attach the nodes of the power, steering and chassis.

To start work, 2 U-shaped tubes are welded to the bottom of the card, which need to be reinforced with transverse ties. Each tie is attached to the frame at one end, and at the other end to the corresponding tubes intended for attaching the units. This will give the entire structure the necessary rigidity. Brackets for mounting the engine are welded onto the frame, the location of which depends on the brand of engine chosen for karting. For mounting, special motors are used, for example, Rotax.

A more budget option is any air-cooled engine, for example, from Zaporozhets or a motorcycle. The transmission drive will be attached to the rear axle, so the engine is mounted under or behind the driver's seat.

Installation of control and assembly of the car

Mounting the steering is quite simple. A gear is attached to the steering shaft, the best option is z \u003d 10. Next, this gear is connected to the rotary cams, which, in turn, are attached to the rods that turn the wheels. Then the whole structure is attached to the frame.

At each stage, you need to strictly check the dimensions on the drawing, otherwise you can break the symmetry, which will not allow the map to stay on the road normally.

The pilot's seat is bent out of sheet metal, after which it is installed on the frame. At the final stage, the wheels included in the karting set are attached to the frame, the front wheels are attached to the steering. The brakes are mounted only on the rear wheels, they are connected to the pedal with the help of cables. At this stage, all dimensions and levels are finally measured and adjusted.

A go-kart is a non-suspension micro sports car very popular among young motorsport enthusiasts. Often, in such competitions (especially in Russia), do-it-yourself kart racers take part. Indeed, why pay someone money if you can design your own vehicles, especially since the costs for this are minimal (and not only from a financial point of view). How to assemble a go-kart with your own hands? Find out the answer to this question in this article.

How to make a go-kart with your own hands? Selection of technical characteristics for the vehicle

First, you must have an idea of what size your future car will be. To properly assemble a kart with your own hands, you should draw a plan on paper. Only on it you can correctly assemble a kart with your own hands. The drawings of this transport are shown in the photo below.

This is how your circuit should look like. Here it is necessary to note the most important thing - the length of the wheelbase and the overall dimensions. By the way, the longitudinal distance between the axles on karts should be at least 101 and not more than 122 centimeters with a total length of 132 cm. The diameter of the karting wheels should not exceed 35 centimeters. It is these characteristics that will contribute to a stable and safe ride on this type of transport.

How to make a go-kart with your own hands? A little about the frame

It is best to start assembling a kart with your own hands from the frame. It is more convenient to draw it in full size on graph paper pasted on A1 sheet or thick cardboard. Such a scheme will serve as a plan according to which individual nodes and elements will be adjusted to the draft. The frame diagram should be drawn in several projections - side and top view. In this case, the front spar is depicted separately.

Now let's start making a slipway for assembling the frame. This element will be required if the machine will be produced in a small series (that is, as in our case). As the basis for the slipway, a duralumin steel sheet measuring 170x90 centimeters should be used. In this case, the thickness of the material used should be about 15 centimeters. A longitudinal line is drawn along the axis of the element (this will be a trace of the plane of symmetry of the transport frame), and perpendicular to it - a base line (for mounting the pivot bushing retainers).

The holes in the bushings are cut on a special one. Fixing longitudinal spars are mounted on the slipway. The frame itself is assembled from several elements:

1. Two spars.

2. Front bumper.

3. Front, rear and middle cross members.

4. Brackets for mounting the steering column.

About the motor and chassis

As for the engine, two-stroke single-cylinder air-cooled gasoline units are often mounted on karts. You should also think about a special protective device that will protect the pilot from possible burns from the internal combustion engine. Do-it-yourself karting is also equipped with a brake system. It must have at least two wheels.

However, for security reasons, it is recommended to install at once on four. The control system will be traditional, like on any other car, with a round steering wheel.

Proportions

Pay attention to the ratio of the sizes of all leading components and assemblies in the machine. The width of the karting platform must correspond to the dimensions of the frame, and its length must correspond to the distance from the seat to the pedals.

Other important details

In the design of this vehicle, it is also necessary to provide special fences that will not allow the legs to slip off the pedals. The same applies to the seat - it should not be such that the driver flew from one side of the kart to the other when cornering. Ideally, the pilot sits tightly in the seat and does not move to the side during sharp turns and high speeds (except for the possible overload of internal organs).

Separate parts of the gearbox should be closed with a special shield for ½ part. Also pay special attention to the fuel tank. Remember that its volume should not exceed five liters, and the container itself is securely fixed in order to completely exclude unauthorized release of fuel to the outside. You should not make an overly large tank - five liters is enough for a single-cylinder two-stroke engine, the working volume of which is only a few tens of cubic centimeters.

All parts of the steering system and running gear must be cottered. It is also allowed to use the ignition system, anti-shock agents, carburetors of any type (foreign or domestic production).

What parts can not be used in assembly?

According to experts, it is forbidden to use the following elements in the design of this vehicle:

1. Body.

2. Fairings.

3. Steering with worm, cable, chain or gear drive.

4. Differentials.

5. Various superchargers and fuel injection.

6. Pedals that, when pressed, go beyond the dimensions of the frame.

Follow these rules, you will assemble the safest unit in the minimum amount of time!

So, we figured out how to build a do-it-yourself kart, what details you should pay attention to when assembling. Good luck!

Steps

  • Gather materials. If you're on a budget, look for inexpensive parts in a junkyard. Or you can use salvageable parts from an old lawn mower or broken go-karts from a flea market. Lawn mower repair shops can give you junk parts or broken trimmers, as well as a used 10-15 horsepower four-stroke engine with a horizontal shaft and a clutch drive. Here's what you'll need:

    • For Chassis:
      • 9.2 meters of 2.5 cm square pipe
      • 1.8 meters of 2cm round steel pipe
      • 1.8 meters of 1.5 cm pipe
      • Steel plate 0.5 cm thick, slightly larger in width and length than the engine
      • Plywood or metal (for seat and bottom)
      • Seat
    • For engine:
      • Engine (you can take the engine of an old gasoline trimmer)
      • Chain to match sprocket hub
      • Bolts, washers
      • Fuel tank
    • For transmission:
      • wheels
      • Gearbox and handbrake
      • Drive shaft
      • Bearings
      • steering shaft
      • Brake pedal
      • Throttle/gas pedal
  • Get a welding machine.

  • Consider purchasing a set of kart parts. If you are not interested in inventing and welding kart parts yourself, buy a constructor with detailed instructions and diagrams, which you can easily assemble without welding using simple tools.

    • The pleasure of building a kart yourself without the hassle of designing a model and sourcing materials will set you back about $550.
  • Chassis and steering column assembly
